Abuse book - Cover ( 2nd version)

  1. I like it. Very simple but huge improvement over the first try.

Unlike volume I and the appearance of the cover here, I do hope (and strongly encourage) that you will maintain uniform font styles and some sort of consistent formatting within the book itself.

  2. Straightforward, serious and classy.

  3. I think a simple graphic denoting a closed door (as in "behind closed doors") might add something without adding too much frivolity to a serious book.

  4. Much better, IMHO. Perhaps you can use the same fonts that were used on the cover of the first "Daas Torah" book, and I think it'll be great.

  5. still needs help. remember people tend to judge a book by its cover

  6. I disagree:

    (1) Appearance of the cover is too homemade, like it came right out of Microsoft Word.

    (2) You've got THREE subtitles for your book. What's up with that?

Bland & confusing. I'd offer a suggestion, if I could, but don't know what you're going for.

But I seem to be one of the few who liked the intent of the first cover; just had an issue with a few conflicting graphic elements, which were sabotaging it.

The FONT for the words "Child & Domestic Abuse" has to go, it's too contrived and kitschy. Try to keep the same font, whether bigger or smaller or thicker thinner is ok, but uses light coloring in the background which you have not shown. Color, meaning ART, catches people's eyes and moves them, while words are secondary as people take a closer look.

You have to think of this as being displayed on bookshelves and tables where it has to compete with other title.

Therefore, fonts, graphics, art, and visual design are all specialized fields that must be carefully brought together, there is a whole art and science to this, so that "the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts."

  8. I should be more specific.

    1. there are like 4 different fonts.

    2. The title is too long, and it has like 5 different parts

    3. The white background makes it look blank

    4. it doesn't catch your eye at all

    5. the fonts are just normal microsoft word fonts, you need something nicer

  9. Much better,projects serious scholarship not artsy-ness.

  10. Maybe it would be worthwhile for us commentors to express our hakaras hatov by chipping in to pay a graphic artist?

Or maybe I could ask on Areivim if anyone has the skills and would volunteer?

  11. FWIW, I was thinking of planer text, in front of a background like a faded version of this picture of an old but imposing-looking door. Google images has a number of likely pictures if you search for "old door" (without the quotes).

I definitely agree with Micha and others re: font size.
you can vary the font size, but the font itself should stay the same on the cover. it needs cohesiveness.
And I like the idea of the door- i.e. an image that is large and grayed, and BEHIND the bold text of the title and subtitle. having the image stand in the foreground or parallel with text would be more kitschy. not good.

Why can't you use the same font you used for Daas Torah I?

And a simpler title would be:
(or some variation thereof) and certainly adapting the font sizes and word placement)

    DAAS TORAH
    volume II

Understanding and Addressing Child and Domestic Abuse
according to Torah, Psychology, and Law

p.s. some of us have made donations. (i have, for instance). Whatever you can donate would certainly be helpful. Especially if you know someone who has been affected by this topic. Dont just be a bystander, witness, or victim. Do something! Take a step towards repair. Help ensure this sefer is as monumentous and professional as it can and should be.

    Haztlacha Rabbi Eidensohn.
