The Dark Heart of the Republican Party

 https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2022/11/the-dark-heart-of-the-gop/671965/

In terms of actual damage, January 6 was far worse than one violent crime in San Francisco. Republican leaders—and here I will leave aside Donald Trump, who is in a class of hideousness all by himself—have said far worse things over the past five years. But a parade of Republicans somehow think that an unhinged, hammer-wielding intruder putting an old man in the ICU is funny.

Sure, but was it worse than a summer of "mostly peaceful protests" that results in multiple deaths and billions of dollars in damage and ruined lives?
The Atlantic can't be taken seriously. Are there some Republicans having inappropriate fun with this? Sure, and it's wrong. And what do you think the response of the liberal talk-show hosts would be if a prominent Republican or spouse was attacked?
Here's one for you - Ben Shapiro was recently on a talk show and, after arguing about pronouns with a much largest transgender activist, was threatened with being assaulted by that activist. Know what the response from the hosts was? Well why did you have to antagonize him, Ben? It's your fault if something happens. That isn't dark?
