Meeting a few Jews today and talking about the
current situation in Israel, America, terrorism, Jihadis, Donald Trump and
reactions to him, a few things came to my mind that are worth
sharing.
You know, I looked at the young men who were having
the discussion that I was part of, I said the problem is the Jews, that Jews do
not know how to be real Jews. We are very far away from knowing who we are and
what we are supposed to be. They looked at me in surprise. So I
continued.
Look at the Israelis, they are confused. Especially the secular
Israelis, why are they so soft in confronting threats when their grandparents
knew how to protect themselves? When the Arabs attacked Israel in 1947, the Jews
fought back and won. When the Arabs blocked off the Suez Canal in 1956 the
Israelis fought back and won. When the Arabs massed their armies to destroy
Israel and the Jews in 1967, Israel won in six days! When the Arabs attacked in
1973 on Yom Kippur, the Israelis fought back and won. And many other examples
like this. So why can't the Israelis win today?
And I said, because the previous generations, even if they were secular and
not religious they knew about the Pogroms and the Holocaust. While today's
generation is dreaming of "peace" and not just peace but they are dreaming of
dancing with the Arabs not just that they are dreaming of going to have a good
time in New York, Paris, and have a good time in the discothèques. They are not
thinking of fighting and winning, they are thinking about how they can be with
the world and dance at their parties.
I said, what if someone breaks into your house and starts stabbing everyone
and you sit around and basically don't do much to protect yourself. Who is at
fault? Of course it is you because you are expected to defend yourself and
defeat the attacker otherwise you are a fool!
So my listeners said to me, what will the world say? There is nothing
we can do!
I said really? And asked them, do you happen to know what holiday we
are celebrating right now? And they looked at me, still not getting it. People
think that Chanuka is about "lights" and "parties" and fun! I said that in the
times of the ancient Greeks, they occupied Eretz Yisrael, and the Jews started
to assimilate and join them, to become Misyavnim - Hellenists. And just like
today it did not end with just copying the Greeks and wanting to be like them,
but with that came intermarriage and Shmad, apostasy as Jews started to convert
to the Avoda Zara of the Greeks, just like today secular Jews are assimilated,
marrying Christian and Muslim gentiles and being lost to Yiddishkeit.
So what happened, at a certain point there was a man by the name of
Matisyahu (no, not the singer I told them) but he was Matisyahu the Kohen Gadol,
the High Priest, and one day he had enough and fought back. He picked up a sword
and killed a Greek official and an apostate Jew who was going to serve an idol
and guess what happened next? The Jews won, they defeated the Greeks, regained
their own land and re-dedicated the Bais HaMikdash, and that is what Chanuka
means, the "re-dedication" not just of the Bais HaMikdash but of the triumph of
Torah over the secular world, of light over darkness, the few defeated the many
and they survived.
That is the moral of Chanuka because after 2000 years of wandering
around in the Golus and having to pay our dues we had to bow our heads, but now
that so many Jews are back in Eretz Yisrael, they are back home and at home you
have the responsibility to protect yourself or else you are a fool.
A day in the life of a Jew on Chanuka 5776.
Thanks RaP for your post.
ReplyDeleteContemplating the opinion of Da'as Torah, I recall the answer from what Rav Elchonon Wasserman zt"l hy"d wrote in the name of his rebbe, the Chofetz Chaim zt"l: the difference between Chanukah and Purim:
When we were threatened with physical annihilation like by Purim, what did Mordechai do? He put on sackcloth and and he prayed and got even lots of children to join him.
But by Chanukah, when only our souls were challenged, on the contrary, we went out to combat the Greeks with physical weapons.
.
One would find it odd: it would seem logical that the TEVA or nature of our strategy should have been the other way around: to combat force with force and to counteract the Greeks with impeccable logical debates, but we Jews are supernatural and we defy teva

Very interesting, and I don't wish to hijack your post, but I have a question regarding the Hashmonaim. We learn that Chazal were critical of the Hashmonaim when they took the Keter malchut, since they were Kohanim, and could not have both crowns at the same time. However, I checked in Rambam's Hilchot Melachim, where he says that anyone can be a melech, even a Kohein (does not necessarily need to be from Beit David).
ReplyDeleteSo how do we resolve this contradiction?
Eddie where are the sources that you mention?
ReplyDeleteTwo points.
ReplyDelete1. We do not have a Beis Hamikdash overrun by the enemy. We are living in Israel before Bias Hamashiach and need to respect that and not get too ahead of ourselves.
2. we don't rely on miracles - i am not sure what you are advocating.
The first point, unless I am mistaken, is the explanation that Chazal opposed the Hashmonaim once they assumed the role of Kings. I will search for a source, but i thought it is comon knowledge - correct me if I am wrong.
ReplyDeleteSecond, Rambam in Hilchot Melachim ch 1:
http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/1188345/jewish/Melachim-uMilchamot-Chapter-1.htm
Halacha 8
If a prophet appoints a king from any other tribe of Israel and that king follows the path of Torah and mitzvot and fights the wars of God, he is considered as a king, and all the commandments associaed with the monarchy apply to him.
Although the kingship was primarily given to David and one of his descendents will be serving as king, there is halachic legitimacy to the rule of other kings. Behold, Achiyah of Shilo appointed Jeroboam and told him (I Kings 11:38):
'And it shall be that if you obey all that I command you... I will
build you a faithful house as I built for David.' Similarly, Achiyah told him (ibid.: 36): 'To his (David's) son, I will grant one tribe, so that David, My servant, will always have sovereignty before Me in Jerusalem.'
The big takeaway from Chanukah is the beis in the beis hamikdash with the menorah, not the military aspect nearly as much.

My post is not about "melachim" or about ANY kind of leaders. It is about the need for Jews to take practical measures to defend themselves. During the 2000 year Golus, Jews were forced to rely on gentile rulers and their armies and police to for communal defense, they had no choice. But now that at least half if not the majority of the world's Jews are in Israel, they need to defend themselves against terrorism. It makes no difference who the leaders are since everyone is Mechuyav in the Mitzva of "Ushmarten Es Atzmechem" ("Guard/protect yourselves [from harm]") as well as the Din of "Habo Leharogcha, Hargeihu Techila" ("if one arises to kill you, kill him first") and the DE FACTO realities of Kibbush Ha'aretz, since the reality of NOW is that Jews are living in their own home in Eretz Yisrael, and not in some far off Shtetel in Eastern Europe of the Pale of Settlement.
ReplyDeleteAsk yourself, if we look at the Har Nof Massacre in 2014 as an example, when Arab murderers come into the holy Bais Medrash and shot and hacked at the Mispallelim, how absurd and ridiculous it was to hear they "threw shtenders" at the killers, when they should have been armed and shot back. So this should be common sense, but too many Frum people are still suffering from the 2000 year golus mindset and their silly magical thinking that some fairy will take care of them when they obviously have to do the job themselves, or else they are fools and hence lose their precious lives needlessly. They may even be guilty of own deaths if they fail to take the correct measures for self-protection Halachically.
As for the job qualifications of being the Mashiach, we all know (based on so many Torah sources too many to cite now) that it can only be someone from Bais Yosef to be the Mashiach Ben Yosef, and/or from Bais Dovid to be the Mashiach Ben Dovid. In fact the RAMBAM clearly states in Hilchos Melachim I think that once Dovid Hamelech came along and was anointed by Shmuel Hanovi Al Pi HKB"H, then from that point on the Malchus Yisrael becomes DYNASTIC belonging to the descendants of Dovid Hamelech ONLY, and is locked in and only someone from the seed of Dovid Hamelech directly can be the real deal Mashiach, and all others will fail no matter high high their motives, as Rabbi Eidensohn correctly points out from the RAMBAN he quotes at length.
No argument there!
ReplyDeleteBut like with everything else, there is the reality of history and what happened and then there is the spiritual Ruchniasdikka aspect of the same phenomenon.
Also, there is one important point that makes OWN our times different from the past 2000+ years of Jewish history, that for the first time in 2000+ plus years the majority of the world's Jews are now living in Eretz Yisroel. We are back to the times of Yetsias Mitzrayim.
So just as during the Geula Rishona (the Exodus from Egypt), when the Bnai Yisroel came out of Mitzrayim, NOW during the Geula Achrona (The Final Redemption) when the Jews are coming out of the final Golus (exile in the Diaspora), they again face a situation similar to that when they faced the Yevanim (Greeks) and Misyavnim (Hellenists) while they were living in Eretz Yisrael.
And just as Yehoshua led the Bnai Yisrael in Kibbush Haaretz that eventually resulted in the building of the First Bais HaMikdash, and then later Ester and Mordechai had to fight and kill Haman and Amalekim to set the stage for the rebuilding of the Second Bais HaMikdash, and then Macabeem fought to take back the Second Bais HaMikdash from the Greeks, likewise in our own times the REAL struggle is about the eventual rebuilding of the Third Bais HaMikdash that is once more on the table after 2000+ years of dormancy and that is why it is such a volatile situation.
Today, it is the Bnai Yishmael and Bnai Eisav, as well as the Misyavnim, the secular Jews who oppose this kind of thinking, in our OWN days that are opposing the rebuilding of the Third Bais Hamikdash and the world is watching and waiting to see if the Jews are going to be like the Macabim or like the wimps they have conditioned them to be over the 2000+ year Golus.
The worst Golus is the one that lives inside the heads and mentalities of the Nebech Yidden who think they can come with thinking and attitudes they learned in Eastern Europe or the capitals of the West of being "Court Jews" or "Ghetto Jews" when after the Holocaust and the return of the Jews to Eretz Yisrael it's a new world order mamash and this requires a paradigm shift in thinking from martyrdom and magical thinking to pro-active self-defense and how to live as Torah Jews in a totally Jewish country.
No one said that the birth pangs of Mashiach, Chevlei Mashiach would be easy!! And this what we are going through at this very moment!!!!
I guess that is why in Torah there is PARDES, while in this post I was focusing on Peshat you are talking about the Sod in your comment! Please write up a guest post from your important perspective Lekovod Chanuka, as I did, thanks.
A Freilchen Chanuka, and may the light of Torah banish all Sheker forever!! Amen!!
