Seridei Aish: Difficulty in making necessary legitimate changes in halacha - Mistaken marriage

The issue of the need for legitimate halachic change is discussed by the Seridei Aish as well as the apparently insurmountable difficulty in doing so. This letter is found in volume 2 page 447-448 in the Collected Writings of Rabbi Yehiel Yaakov Weinberg edited by Dr. Marc Shapiro.

  1. Interesting. The Sridei Aish makes theoretical arguments to be mattir, but has enough anavah to be mevatel his daas to those who came before him. Compare and contrast this attitude to that of RYGB, who is flippantly eager to push the envelope to fit his world view. To be fair, the Sridei Aish probably never learned Yerushalmi like RYGB does (sarcasm, in case you missed it). In any event, RYGB evidently does not possess the anavah of the Sridei Aish, and in fact considers himself a great sage. He feels that he is bar hochi to move forward with Executive Action against black letter halacha of hundreds of years to fit his leftist view of the world. Reminds me of Barack Hussein.

  2. This letter is referred to by R' Rackman, in his chapter on RMF's "Halachic Progress", on Kiddushie Taus. Rackman wanted to expand the paramters of RMF's psak, and in fact did so (as has RSK). It should be noted that RMF banned Rackman's book which contained that chapter.

  3. With all due respect to the Seridei Aish whom I admire greatly, however I am not sure if that kind of anivus is warranted or praiseworthy.

על כך אמר רבי יוחנן: ענוותנותו של רבי זכריה בן אבקולס, החריבה את ביתנו, ושרפה את היכלנו, והגליתנו מארצנו. (גיטין נה-נו).

You mean to say that there are halachic grounds to be matir, but because of anava you will ruin a woman's life. What gives? What kind of a system is that?

  4. In the case of poor Tamar, the only person ruining her life was herself.

  5. It's quite simple. The sridei eish realized that there are previous gedolim greater than himself that forsaw kilkulim that he himself did not. if you think you add one brick now, but down the line you will topple the whole building. This has been realized to it's full extent in this current fiasco. Yes, by gedoilim that should have not involved themselves in such from the getgo. What a sad state of affairs.
