Moscow: Israeli ‘mercenaries’ fighting with far-right Ukrainian unit

A spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry on Wednesday claimed Israeli mercenaries were fighting alongside the far-right Azov Regiment in Ukraine, further fueling tensions with Israel after Russia suggested Adolf Hitler had “Jewish blood.”

“Israeli mercenaries are practically shoulder to shoulder with Azov militants in Ukraine,” Maria Zakharova told pro-Kremlin Sputnik radio in an interview.

Azov rose to prominence in 2014, when its far-right activists took up arms to fight pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region but have since fallen under the command of Ukraine’s military.

They have been fighting alongside the Ukrainian army against Russian troops, who on February 24 launched a military campaign in the pro-Western country.

Its members are part of the Ukrainian resistance in the port city of Mariupol, holed up inside the Azovstal steel plant against which Russian forces launched a major assault on Tuesday.

IMHO, the left wing Bennett / Lapid government have little experience in politics, they are like kids who have never held official position in the past, and are making loud statements as if they are still students at university.
They should have remained neutral, and not voted against Russia in the UN. After all, Russia/USSR voted for the establishment of the State of Israel in 1947/8, and all Israel needed to do was to abstain. Now Russia is peeved and is backing the Hamas and other terror groups, and we don't know if their Syrian occupation will turn antagonistic towards Israel.

Yeah, pretty sure the USSR lost any credit it had for voting for Israel in 1947 after spending the next 40 years arming its enemies and encouraging them to destroy it.

Seems like Putin has apologised already..
He knows Israel has more advanced weapons than Ukraine, and doesn't want what's left of his army to be destroyed.

It's a delicate dance. Israel might have better weapons but can't handle the economic damage of a prolonged war like Russia clearly can.
Both sides are wary. The Israelis don't want to anger the Russians so they can keep hitting Syria. The Russians know there's a limit to Israelis taking abuse and don't want to cross that line.
