אמת ליעקב ויקרא פרק יט פסוק ג
(ג) איש אמו ואביו תיראו ואת שבתותי תשמרו.
נראה לבאר הקשר בין שני ענינים אלה, דבאמת המאמין בקדמות העולם - וכמו שמאמינים אומות העולם ורשעי ישראל שבמשך הזמן נתפתח האדם מכל מיני קופים ושאר חיות וכדומה - בהכרח שסובר שכל מה שהדורות מתרחקים מהזמן הקדמון יותר הם מפותחים ויותר הם חשובים, ולכן אדרבה - הם סוברים שהדור הזקן חייב לכבד את הדור הצעיר, אבל אנו שמאמינים שהאדם הוא יציר כפיו של הקדוש ברוך הוא וככל שמתרחקים הדורות יותר אנו מתרחקים מההשפעה האלקית ומגדלותו יתברך, בודאי השומה עלינו לכבד את הדור הקודם, שהרי הם חשובים וגדולים יותר ממנו, ולכן כשבאה התורה להזהיר על "איש אמו ואביו תיראו", הוצרכה לחזור ולשנות גם את פרשת "ואת שבתותי תשמרו", דהרי השבת הוא הזכר והאות לחידוש העולם על ידי הקדוש ברוך הוא בששת מעשה בראשית, ודו"ק.
בענין זה אזכיר מה ששמעתי מהגר"א וואסרמן זצ"ל: שאילו ראה דארווין את החפץ חיים לא היה אומר שהאדם נתפתח מקופים וכדומה, אלא שהוא ראה רק אנשים כמוהו ולכן בא לידי טעות, ודו"ק.
If I were to play Darwin's advocate - the period of 6000 years is not enough to show any evolution of humans, other than mutations that reduce our health.

The argument brought above is a straw man argument. Not really applying to evolution.
In any case, theologically it is also false. Since the Torah says that man was made from dust, then the claim would see the dust as higher than Adam himself.
This is no refutation.
ReplyDeleteWe do not live in The Matrix. If we find fossils millions of years old, records of older versions of humans who were more ape-like, telling us that it's all stuff God hid in the Earth to test our "emunah" is condescending and, frankly, stupid.
Further, this excerpt completely misuses the word "descent" and applies a meaning to it that isn't really there. Descent doesn't mean decline in this context, it means something else came first and then this. So when they say we descended from apes, they mean we developed from them, not that we're a lower form of life.
The final argument is also easily refuted - Avraham Avinu came from Terach. We don't deny an empty idol worshipper like Terach existed because of Avraham Avinu's supernal holiness.
I agree to the comment below. Was just about to write myself that the gap between generations is insignificant compared to evolutionary time. The "seeing the Chofetz Chaim" argument seems strange as it implies that no believer in evolution ever met the Chofetz Chaim without changing his mind.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think some people wete unaware of how stagegcraft and Hollywood work. A movie or a play starts with a bustling scene. All to give the illusion that we the audience are now being introduced to something that's been ongoing long before the curtain was raised or the projector in the theater started rolling.
ReplyDeleteThat's why we keep Shabnos. To testify that G-d in seven days put together something that, had G-d not told us how it got here, we'd think took billions of years to arrive at.
Got it? No evolution. Evolution is a theory. The available data is,explained somewhat by it. But ultimately the truth is the world is only a few thousand years old.
Some people like believing their favorite fictional characters are real by "suspending disbelief". Some people believe in evolution.
