Gra: Torah comes from the poor - not the rich

כתר ראש אורחות חיים

  1. Let's be honest very few people hold this way anymore. Gedolim all seem to be trying to be admurim. Even R' Eliashiv, while he may live in a small house, has become a corporation unto himself.

  2. I think the Gra's point is that there is a certain emes that comes from the ameilut of an ani that someone who was "spoon fed" cannot achieve. And keep in mind ani is not neccecarily poor in money- you can be poor in many other areas of life even if you're a millionaire...

  3. Your definition definitely excludes the Admurim of the various Chassidic sects, as well as many of the children of Roshei Yeshivot today(who will eventually replace their fathers). They are raised as royalty.

  4. No, no, you're missing the whole point. He was clearly referring to the definition of rich in Avos (they guy who has everything he wants) and juxtaposing it with the Koheles/Chazal adage about never being satisfied with what one has.
The big Admorim may be millionaires (or more) but who knows, maybe they're really the poorest Jews around.
