Smear and Loathing: A Close Look at Accusations of Ukrainian Anti‐Semitism

 https://www.cato.org/commentary/smear-loathing-close-look-accusations-ukrainian-anti-semitism

Given this cast of characters, it’s unsurprising that—as Shekhovtsov reported on the Open Democracy website in May 2014—the Kremlin propaganda narrative depicting post‐Euromaidan Ukraine as a nest of neo‐Nazis would coexist with frequent, virulent anti‐Semitic rhetoric in the separatist movement in Eastern Ukraine. Shekhovtsov mentions street posters, leaflets, internet posts, and even speeches at rallies attacking the new government in Kyiv as a Jewish clique out to use Ukrainians to defend the interests of rich Jews, or depicting the Euromaidan revolution as a “Zionist coup.”

The Kremlin itself has sometimes resorted to subtler forms of Jew‐baiting in its psychological warfare against Ukraine. Last October, Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former Putin‐puppet president and currently deputy chairman of the security council, published a repulsive ad hominem tirade arguing that negotiations with the current Ukrainian government were pointless because its members, in addition to being weak, greedy, and corrupt, were damaged people without stable national and ethnic roots. The longest and nastiest portion of the article attacked Zelensky as a man with “particular ethnic roots” who had “essentially rejected his identity” for political and pragmatic reasons and compared him to a Jew in Nazi Germany seeking a post in the SS.

Ok, it's a bit extreme, but the famous Or sameach wrote about those who call Berlin their Jerusalem, from there a whirlwind will come and destroy them. The actual thesis was somewhat more in depth, it was about Jews assiilating in each culture they enter, and this being the pattern of galus.

So the atatck of the Soviet lacky was anti-Ukrainian, but not anti-semitic. he was just decrying the fact that a Jew had given up his own religious ethics and become part of an anti-Russian, anti-christ movement.

The Jews in Russia have been very well treated and protected by Putin. I disagree with his methods and foreign militarism, but he has treated the Jews there very well.

  2. Wow so you give Putin for attacking a country with a large Jewish population because he is nice to his Jews?!

  3. a) he doesn't need my pass
    b) if you check what i wrote, and it remains unedited, I said the opposite, i do not agree with his militarism.

Medved is mocking Zelensky, this is some time ago. Presumably he means Jews should be loyal to their Russian benefactors, who have allowed so many to thrive, become oligarchs, and enjoy wealth and privileges unknown even in western countries!

  4. why does the Navi criticise Damascus, and say it will be punished forever? or bavel, which will lie derelict forever? A number of such prophecies are made against the tormentors of Israel.

And Yosef died and all his brothers, and all of that generation, and the children of Israel multiplied and
swarmed and increased and grew very - very strong and the land became filled with them. (Shemos 1:6
    -7)
This description is not just a slice of ancient history. Rather the Torah is mapping out for us what can
easily be titled, "the anatomy of an exile." After Yosef and his brothers and that whole generation,
who knew grandfather Yaakov passed away, the next generation began to blunder into the general
Egyptian population. They became enamored with Egyptian culture and were at risk of becoming
    lost for all time.
Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk ztl., the "Ohr Somayach" wrote in his commentary on the 26th chapter
of Vayikra about this repeating pattern of Jewish history. As a young Torah scholar, decades before
the war he writes the following prescient words. "Modern man thinks that Berlin is Jerusalem, but a
fierce storm of destruction will emanate from Berlin and leave but a scant remnant. The survivors
will disburse to other countries and Torah will strike new roots and young scholars will produce
undreamed of accomplishments." Who could have imagined the hell fury that was lurking in the
shadows at that time in Germany when so many felt so comfortable and welcome that the word
"Jerusalem" was stricken from the Siddur.

  6. Kal, I'm disagreeing with you on this one. A classic European anti-Semitic trope has been that the Jews are cosmopolitans with no loyalty to anyone but themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That is correct - but was medved implying this? Or simply suggesting that zelensky sold himself short by becoming a Ukrainian (fascist)?

The Russians have a superiority complex about the other nations they engulfed, eg Poland. Estonia etc.

  13. So you claim there is a general rule that contradicts chazal?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why does it contradict Chazal? There are punishments which build up, and after some time will rain down on evildoers. That is what both the Neviim and Chazal say.

    Hilchot Teshuva ch.3
    1

Each and every person has merits and sins. A person whose merits
exceed his sins is [termed] righteous. A person whose sins exceed his
merits is [termed] wicked. If [his sins and merits] are equal, he is
    termed a Beinoni.

The same applies to an entire country. If the merits of all its
inhabitants exceed their sins, it is [termed] righteous. If their sins
are greater, it is [termed] wicked. The same applies to the entire
    world.א

    2

If a person's sins exceed his merits, he will immediately die because of his wickedness as [Jeremiah 30:14] states: "[I have smitten you...] for the multitude of your transgressions."

Similarly, a country whose sins are great will immediately be obliterated as implied by [Genesis 18:20]: "The outcry of Sodom and Amorah is great....

In regard to the entire world as well, were its [inhabitants'] sins
to be greater than their merits, they would immediately be destroyed as [Genesis 6:5] relates: "God saw the evil of man was great... [and God said: `I will destroy man....']"

This reckoning is not calculated [only] on the basis of the number of
merits and sins, but also [takes into account] their magnitude. There
are some merits which outweigh many sins as implied by [I Kings 14:13]: "Because in him, there was found a good quality." In contrast, a sin may outweigh many merits as [Ecclesiastes 9:18] states: "One sin may obscure much good."

The weighing [of sins and merits] is carried out according to the
wisdom of the Knowing God. He knows how to measure merits against sins.ב
