In 2005, the Sephardic chief rabbi of Israel, Shlomo Amar, formally recognized the Bnei Menashe as "descendants of Israel" and encouraged their return to Israel and the Jewish people.
Over the past decade, more than 1,700 members of the community have made aliyah to Israel thanks to Shavei Israel, the organization I chair.
All have undergone formal conversion by the Chief Rabbinate to remove any doubts regarding their personal status and have been granted Israeli citizenship.
But another 7,232 remain in India, anxiously awaiting their chance to make aliyah. The time has come to put an end to their waiting.[...]

ReplyDeleteI looked a bit into this subject - as far as I could on the net. I think indeed that it is not very probable that they really stem from a jewish tribe.
ReplyDeleteHowever, they were missioned by christians - christianism is the majority religion in Mitzoram - and one person came to the conclusion that christiamism was not true, rather that judaism is the true religion, a bit like the King of the Kasars, or not so far back, a group of Italians in the village of San Nicandro.
Therefore, it was them who sent for help in the 50es, it was them who took the initiative to learn and to take up ol torah u mitzwoth.
As far as I understand, they receive full giurim and live according to halacha.
So what's the problem? Isn't there a Mitzwah of converting those who want it sincerely?
I think the attitude of the person with the nick "ben torah" is very problematic and contrary to what a ben torah should be.
PS: I am a bit astonished that the blog owner left Ben Torah's comment uncommented and uncensored.
ReplyDeleteIn my view, it goes again the Mitzwa "veahavta et ha ger" and against the Issur of oppressing a ger.
