Komarno Rebbe (Imrei Kodesh page75) I shall explain the nature of demons according to the true reality of the matter. It is known—based on the teachings of our Master—that there are right-leaning demons and Jewish demons. These entities dwell in the air and act benevolently toward human beings; they are not, in any sense, to be categorized as idolatrous deities. Their mode of operation is as follows: there is an overseer appointed over them who, acting upon the mandate of the herald of the Heavenly Court, issues instructions to his specific group—directing one spirit to go and harm a certain individual, and another to go elsewhere. When a person who has been afflicted by these spirits comes to a a completely righteous individual seeking prayer and a decree for his well-being, the tzaddik blesses the afflicted person and commands that he be healed. Immediately, the overseer intervenes and instructs the spirit in question: "Depart from this person, for such-and-such tzaddik has issued this command." These spirits are highly submissive when it comes to fulfilling the will of a tzaddik—especially before G-d—and They undertake no action—whether trivial or significant—except by the authorization of the Holy Realm and the Heavenly Court. They yearn and long to be privileged to hear the blessings of G-d; they hold those who fear God in high regard and protect them. These demons contain no trace of idolatry whatsoever; they do not present themselves as deities requiring incense offerings or the dedication of precious items. Rather, there are completely righteous individuals who see them and utilize them. As we said these demons are obedient and profoundly submissive to the Torah and to the righteous individuals who study it. If a righteous person wishes to employ them for a difficult task, it is sometimes necessary force them with an oath . This constitutes the Shimusha Rabba and Shimusha Zuta—practices utilized by the Geonim
