President Donald Trump is freezing more than $2bn (£1.5bn) in federal funds for Harvard because it would not make changes to its hiring, admissions and teaching practices that his administration said were key to fighting antisemitism on campus.
Obama, a Harvard alum, described the freeze as "unlawful and ham-handed".
He called on other institutions to follow Harvard's lead in not conceding to Trump's demands.
"Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions – rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect," Obama wrote on social media.
Harvard: How dare you freeze our funding if we refuse to stop the persecution and intimidation of Jews on our campus? How dare you threaten us if we continue to allow our faculty to lie about Israel and teach our students that Jews are evil! Don't you know anything about academic freedom?
ReplyDeleteJust remember that Harvard's whinging is rank hypocrisy: https://www.thefire.org/news/harvard-gets-worst-score-ever-fires-college-free-speech-rankings
Wow so the only way to ensure a truly just world is to entrust Trump with all power including deciding the faculty and curriculum of every college and yeshiva?!
DeletePeople like you are why Trump will eventually turn on us.
DeleteHere he is making a strong effort to protect Jews on campus and rid us of our enemies and you're accusing him of being the villain.
At some point he'll say "Those goddammned ungrateful Jews. Screw 'em. I'll go with their enemies" And then you, without a shred of self-awareness, will post "You see! I told you all along he's an anti-Semite!"
Bottom line: If Harvard upheld its own policies and protected its Jewish students, none of this would be happening.
Wow So now I control Trump or provide a cover for his plans?!
DeleteYes, people like you influence Trump, just people influence others with their behaviour. Imagine you're back in yeshiva. You don't like your rebbe so you keep annoying him until finally one day he yells at you and kicks you out of class. "I have no idea why he did that. Do I control my rebbe?" would get you laughed out of the building.
