Why MP sex scandals no longer shock

It was precisely hypocrisy, Mr Cole says, which led to the Profumo affair in the 1963, seen as the "first public humiliation of a minister for a sex scandal".

John Profumo resigned as secretary of state for war after admitting he had lied to the House of Commons about his relationship with a 19-year-old model and showgirl, Christine Keeler.

  1. With every breach, standards get lower.
Once upon a time, governments balanced their budgets except for exceptional situations like war. If they overspent one year, then underspent the next to make up for it.
And then "The Great Society" idea began in the 1960's and deficit spending became acceptable. Imagine people from 50 years ago, even liberals, looking at the government waste and overspending today. They would be shocked.
Once, television was about entertaining and inspiring. But slowly, sex and vulgarity made its way sneakily in and now they're the backbone of the industry.
Once, an affair would sink a politician. Then JFK got away with it and now it's pretty much weird to not have one.
