THE MYTH OF THE KINDLY GENERAL LEE

The myth of Lee goes something like this: He was a brilliant strategist and devoted Christian man who abhorred slavery and labored tirelessly after the war to bring the country back together.

Lee was a slave owner—his own views on slavery were explicated in an 1856 letter that is often misquoted to give the impression that Lee was some kind of abolitionist. In the letter, he describes slavery as “a moral & political evil,” but goes on to explain that:

The argument here is that slavery is bad for white people, good for black people, and most important, better than abolitionism; emancipation must wait for divine intervention. That black people might not want to be slaves does not enter into the equation; their opinion on the subject of their own bondage is not even an afterthought to Lee.

Lee’s cruelty as a slave master was not confined to physical punishment. In Reading the Man, the historian Elizabeth Brown Pryor’s portrait of Lee through his writings, Pryor writes that “Lee ruptured the Washington and Custis tradition of respecting slave families” by hiring them off to other plantations, and that “by 1860 he had broken up every family but one on the estate, some of whom had been together since Mount Vernon days.” The separation of slave families was one of the most unfathomably devastating aspects of slavery, and Pryor wrote that Lee’s slaves regarded him as “the worst man I ever see.”

  1. It’s evident you are not very well educated of regarding confederate army. Many Jews served proudly at confederate army and many of them owned slaves as many people did owned slaves. Many blacks,white so as Jews owned slaves. Your expertise is a joke!

    The shameful part of our history is that there were many Rabbis who supported slavery as the "curse of Cain". The supposedly great and wise Rabbi Avigdor Miller even wrote that Lincoln deserved to be shot because he freed the slaves and that was against God's will.

  4. As I said before, Trump and friends are not trying to bring back slavery. But the Squad/left are not caring about Chinese ethnic genocide of Uyguir muslims, or slave labour. Campus racism is about Jews and whites. "white privilege" is the battle cry of the left. China is not a concern for them.

  8. I recall reading that some plantation owners were Yehudim, and their slaves had the status of Eved Kna'ani.
    These slaves were NOT required to be freed in the seventh year.

    I don’t claim anyone is better over anyone else. Your opinions goes against historical facts. Many of Jews was proud being at confederate army. Many Jews, so as many whites or blacks owned slaves. It was nothing unusual. You should show respect to fellow Jews instead bashing and twisting facts.

    That was no sin to be part of confederate army. Stop judging fellow Jews without any evidence they sin. You should stop sin actually against your fellow Jew of Lashon Hara.

    Indeed the Pride side in Yeshiva U v Pride wants men students at YU to dress and look like a sexy ladies in violation of Deuteronomy 22:5. Bravo the wide support for YU at SCOTUS 22A184. YU failed so far using the legal strategy of an order to show cause = issued by the court that a party appear in court on a specified date and time to give reasons (show cause) why an order requested by the opposing party should not be made.
