he is on record for denying them - is there basis in halacha or Gemara for this? Perhaps they say in the Gemara that plagues come on to Israel for the sin of x or y. So they deduce from this that only being strict in x and y (eg modest dress , terumot etc.) can prevent disease... I am suggesting this is the thought process.
