President Donald Trump says it is time the US recognises Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, which it captured from Syria in 1967.
In a tweet, Mr Trump declared that the plateau was of "critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and regional stability".
Israel annexed the Golan in 1981 in a move not recognised internationally.
There was no immediate response from Syria, which has sought to regain control of the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has warned about the military "entrenchment" of his country's arch-enemy Iran in the Syria conflict, tweeted his thanks to Mr Trump on Thursday.
DT!?!
ReplyDeleteJust the news without even a hint of thanks!?!?
Trump Derangement Syndrome is truly one of the most potent psychological sicknesses of our time.
Nebach.
As a Jew, I always get confused over this kind of politics. Didn't G-d promise the Land of Israel to the Jewish People? So either the Golan Heights was included, or it wasn't.
ReplyDeleteAnd the State of Israel has both Jewish and non-Jewish citizens. So what does it mean when we say the State of Israel is "Israeli" territory. Are we saying to G-d, "Thank You for giving us the Land of Israel. We've decided to share it with people who aren't Jewish."
Seems like an insult to G-d, if you ask me. And to be sure, no one is asking me. But that's what the comments section is for. Just putting in my two cents.
Joseph Orlow says “As a Jew, I always get confused over this kind of politics. Didn't G-d promise the Land of Israel to the Jewish People? So either the Golan Heights was included, or it wasn't. ReplyDeleteNo. God does allows us to share Israel with people who are not Jewish. God only warns us not to marry them, not to make a covenant with them, and not to give them quarter לא תחנם .
“When the Lord your God brings you to the land that you are about to enter and possess, and He dislodges many nations before you— the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations much larger than you—and the Lord your God delivers them to you and you defeat them, you must doom them to destruction: grant them no terms and give them no quarter ולא תחנם. You shall not intermarry with them: do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons לא תקח לבנך. For they will turn your children away from Me to worship other gods, and the Lord’s anger will blaze forth against you and He will promptly wipe you out. Instead, this is what you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, smash their pillars, cut down their sacred posts, and consign their images to the fire. For you are a people consecrated to the Lord your God: of all the peoples on earth the Lord your God chose you to be His treasured people.” (Deuteronomy 7:1-6)
“Joshua waged war with all those kings over a long period. Apart from the Hivites who dwelt in Gibeon, not a single city made terms with the Israelites; all were taken in battle. For it was the Lord’s doing to stiffen their hearts to give battle to Israel, in order that they might be proscribed without quarter לבלתי היות להם תחינה and wiped out, as the Lord had commanded Moses.” (Joshua 11:18-20).
Avodah Zarah 20a:
“It has indeed been taught so elsewhere: lo tehannem לא תחנם means, thou shalt not allow them to settle on the soil. Another interpretation of lo tehannem ךא תחנם is, thou shalt not pronounce them as graceful; yet another interpretation of lo tehannem לא תחנם is, thou shalt not give them any free gift.”
Of these 3 explanations of לא תחנם, I like the 3rd best. Why? Joshua certainly allowed them to settle on the soil. Rabbis often pronounce non-Jews as graceful; don’t they? Nothing wrong here. But giving free gifts---this is לא תתחנם. This is my view.
thanks for what?
ReplyDeleteare you claiming all of trump has now been purified by this act
his incompetence reversed?
welovetruth says “DT!?! Just the news without even a hint of thanks!?!? Trump Derangement Syndrome is truly one of the most potent psychological sicknesses of our time. Nebach.”
ReplyDeleteDerangement Syndrome = Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is a mental condition in which a person has been driven effectively insane due to their love of Donald Trump, to the point they will abandon all logic and reason. Symptoms for this condition can be very diverse, ranging from racist or xenophobic outbursts to a complete disconnection from reality. TDS can also often result in the sufferer exhibiting violent, homicidal, or even genocidal desires, particularly against residents from foreign countries. Sufferers have also been known to wish direct self-harm on themselves (such as increased tariffs, a desire for tax cuts heavily favoring corporations and the 1%, infringement of first amendment rights, and even the destruction of NATO for comrade Putin), provided that action was initiated by Donald Trump.
Yes, TDS is now cured, over, finished. Trump has been purified by this last act of: “In a tweet, Mr. Trump declared that the plateau was of "critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and regional stability"”
"Thanks for what?"......?!?!?!?!?!??!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me?!?!?!?!
You are so consumed by this irrational hate that you can't even bring yourself to thank him for a very valuable diplomatic and political gift.
I pray to Hashem that my bad middos should never overwhelm me to this pathetic level.
