Saudis offer pathetic explanation of Khashoggi death to preserve ties to US and clear crown prince

foxnews

Saudi Arabia claims that Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist who had been living in the U.S., was accidentally strangled Oct. 2 in a fight with 15 Saudis employed by the nation’s security services and military inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

The Saudi government said it has arrested the entire team and three others. It blames two of the Saudi crown prince’s key aides – the deputy director of Saudi intelligence and his top communications adviser – for Khashoggi’s death. And the kingdom appointed that same crown prince to head a committee to review the incident and restructure the nation’s intelligence agency.
President Trump called the arrests “a great first step” and said he wanted to talk more to the Saudis about what happened. The White House issued a statement offering the Khashoggi family condolences over the “tragic” incident.

  1. That's politics. Russia, Syria, Iran etc killing thousands. Turkey killing Kurds, China killing Muslims. Nobody gives a damn. Why they oppose Saudi? The prince is Modern (Islamic) orthodox who wants peace with Israel.

  2. The prince who runs Saudi Arabia is now political poison. Any U.S. official meeting with him is going to get smeared with that poison. The press does not forgive so easy when one of their own gets murdered, and they are not going to let any elected official get away with doing business as usual with that prince.

So, the world stage has a mess on its hands. One of the prime actors, who controls the oil spigot and has a partial hold on the leash around Iran, has been blacklisted.

  3. Who is the "they"? The saudi security services?

  4. Some thoughts on Jamil’s murder. Jamil, his fiancée, and The Washington Post all thought: no danger/risk to Jamil in Turkey. Really? No danger to Jamil from Tureky police, but yes from Saudi men. Would Saudi officials dare murder Jamil in Turkey? Jamil is a long-time enemy of Saudi and supporter of Qatar and the NYT etc. Jamil found a good home in The Washington Post. Jamil should’ve staid home.
“These too are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of King Hezekiah of Judah copied: It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, And the glory of a king to plumb a matter. Like the heavens in their height, like the earth in its depth, Is the mind of kings—unfathomable. The dross having been separated from the silver, A vessel emerged for the smith. Remove the wicked from the king’s presence, And his throne will be established in justice.” (Proverbs 25:1-5).
The minds of Kings are unfathomable. To the acting king of Saudi, Jamil was the wicked who must be removed to establish justice.

“But Erdogan? This is nobody’s idea of a hero. Certainly, nobody in the United States or Israel trusts or believes this guy. His jails overflow with journalists…and I’m guessing he’s done in hundreds like Khashoggi, only we’ll never know. Think Midnight Express and think Pastor Brunson.”

  7. The media did not arrange the assassination. If there si any conspiracy, then it is an internal saudi matter, which is what the saudi govt. appears to be hinting at.

  8. It is true the news cycle is relentless. 24/7. It's overwhelming, and cal lead to outrage fatigue.

Yet, I still maintain that this case is different. Because the newsmakers themselves won't let it go. Imagine the top honcho in Saudi Arabia were invited to the White House tomorrow, or even next year. It doesn't matter. The WashPo and its liberal brothers-in-news will make the murder of their comrade front and center again to exact revenge for his death.

Questions about the murder I think would dominate, or at least be prominent at, any joint press conference.

  9. Not just liberals. Khashoggi had relationships with basically everyone in U.S. media over the last ten years. even Fox News is covering this.

“To those who wonder why we care about the different nations, I will mention the words of Rabbi Kook: “Love of humanity must be alive in the heart and in the soul…to benefit all the nations…this character trait prepares Israel for the spirit of Moshiach. In all references where we find hints of hatred (towards the non-Jews), it is clear that the intention is only on the evil, which seizes the alliance of many nations today, and especially in the past, when the immorality of the world was far more repulsive. However, we must know that the aim of life – light and holiness – never moved from the Divine Image endowed to all of mankind, nation, and language…” (Midot HaRaya, Ahava, paragraph 5).”
Jamil’s well-known intense hatred of Israel/Jews is significant part of his evil. The White House welcomes those that fight evil. We should too. Rabbi Melamed says “but hatred of Israel is a significant part of the evil in Christianity and Islam, and when groups within them change their attitude toward Israel for the better, their better part becomes clearer.” Trump, Republicans, many Christians and Moslems have no hatred toward Israel/Jews.

  11. Torah thought on וירא
“And Abraham named that site Adonai-yireh [the Lord will see; cf. v. 8], whence the present saying, On the mount of the Lord there is vision בהר ה' יראה. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, By Myself I swear, the Lord declares: Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your favored one, I will bestow My blessing upon you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants והתברכו בזרעך, because you have obeyed My command.” (Genesis 22:14-18).
God’s blessing to Abraham: 1) make us numerous as stars and as dust, 2) we will seize the gates of our foes, and 3)all the nations will ask God for blessings for themselves as God does for the Jews.
The foes are the nations that are jealous of God’s blessings to us. This is behind Jamil and Iran etc hatred of Israel/Jews. We spread God’s blessings though out the world. Eg see

On the mount of the Lord there is vision בהר ה' יראה. American Jews, come home to Israel.

  12. I think you're being way too optimistic. Yes, journalists save a special sense of outrage when one of their own is killed but it won't matter. So maybe it'll be seven minutes instead of five but it will pass.

  13. I have to admit you are right in the sense that if tomorrow the Saudis suddenly make some concession to liberals in the way the Saudis rule Saudi Arabia, or if Donald Trump loses to a Democrat in the next Presidential election, then suddenly the leftist media will find it in their hearts to be forgiving and move on.

The other thing on the Saudi side is cash. They like to buy people's allegiances. The Saudis may have to spread their money around a little to nudge the leftists on to another issue.

And speaking of money, if another story somewhere pops up, the media will be off to the races to cover it to keep the breathless masses coming back to get their news fixes.

So, all in all, yes, it may be 7/5 longer than usual before the murder of the journalist fades into the background noise of history. But, hey!, 40% longer is still something.

  14. And even as we converse, history moves on. There's now a caravan of thousands of Latinos approaching the US' southern border, hoping to cross whether or not the Americans try to stop them. Who will care about Saudi Arabia when they reach the Rio Grande?

Delgado, who said his wife and children are Jewish, was asked at the debate whether he agreed with President Donald Trump’s decision to relocate the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem…“We are also concerned about Mr. Delgado’s remarks regarding ‘settlements’ in Israel,” concluded Weiss. “The notion that Jews should be precluded from residing in certain parts of their homeland and in areas that were settled by the forefathers of the Jewish people and then regained by the State of Israel in a defensive war against Jordan in 1967 is farcical. Jews should have the absolute right to build homes and raise their families in every corner of the State of Israel.”

    My prayer:
    Berachoth 16b:
“Rabbi on concluding his prayer added the following: May it be Thy will, O Lord our God, and God of our fathers, to deliver us from the impudent and from impudence, from an evil man, from evil hap, from the evil impulse, from an evil companion, from an evil neighbor, and from the destructive Accuser, from a hard lawsuit and from a hard opponent, whether he is a son of the covenant or not a son of the covenant [i.e., a Jew or non-Jew. This now forms part of the daily prayers]! [Thus did he pray] although guards [lit., eunuchs] were appointed [By the Roman Government] to protect Rabbi.”

  16. The newsfeed I'm getting indicates the Saudi issue is heating. European nations are reevaluating their relationship with the Saudis -- Germans discussing cutting off weapons technology. Turkey is beginning the legal process of prosecuting the murderers.

Not so simple, wiseguy! Weapon systems aren't Lego blocks, blockhead. You can't just switch one brand out and plug another one in.
