We Need to Protect New York Bail Reform to Protect New York Communities

 https://www.vera.org/news/we-need-to-protect-new-york-bail-reform-to-protect-new-york-communities

All New Yorkers, regardless of wealth, age, race, or ZIP code, deserve to be safe. But an often-overlooked fact is that mass incarceration is actually counterproductive to public safety. People detained pretrial, in particular, are more likely to be rearrested in the future compared to people who are released pretrial—a reflection of the impact of ripping people from their families, homes, and jobs and placing them in unsafe jail conditions.

Before bail reform, New Yorkers facing minor charges were forced to pay bail they couldn’t afford just to stay out of jail. Many couldn’t pay even a $500 bail or, if they could, it would be at the expense of paying rent, putting food on the table, or taking care of other necessities. Without reform, the crisis occurring in New York City’s jails—where 18 people have died so far this year—would be that much worse. Bail reform has kept people alive, families together, and hard-working New Yorkers employed.

New Jersey overhauled its bail system under Christie. Now some Democrats want to roll it back.

Eight years ago, then-Republican Gov. Chris Christie teamed up with Democrats to pass a major overhaul of New Jersey’s criminal justice system, ushering through legislation that made the state among the first in the nation to effectively eliminate cash bail.

Right-wing commentators criticized the reveal too. Sebastian Gorka, a former advisor to President, Donald Trump, said he was "deeply underwhelmed" by Taibbi's thread.

How ‘woke’ went from a social justice term to a pejorative favored by some conservatives

 https://edition.cnn.com/2022/07/10/us/woke-race-deconstructed-newsletter-reaj/index.html

By using the term “woke” however they want, conservatives have muddied its meaning, have obfuscated it to refer to anything having to do with progressivism they don’t like. The same goes for “critical race theory.” They’ve done it with so many terms. “Identity politics” is another one. One of the earliest usages of “identity politics” is in the Combahee River Collective Statement from 1977. It was a way of describing working to end Black women’s oppression – it was a political movement on the basis of identity. Really straightforward. Now, though, “identity politics” is often seen as this negative thing that people don’t want to participate in.

One of the things that gets paired with semantic pejoration is what’s called semantic bleaching. Semantic bleaching is another linguistic process whereby the denotative content of a word is stripped away. I think that “critical race theory” is a good example of that, along with “woke.” Once a word gets semantically bleached, it can come to mean anything. “Woke” has come to mean anything having to do with race or, more broadly, progressivism.

Right loves to hate, imitate Alinsky

“You become a better organizer when you understand that there is nothing new under the sun,” Steinhauser said of his appreciation of Alinsky. “All the pitfalls, the problems, the disputes — this is the way human beings are. Politics is a human science and this guy understood that. He was practical. He understood how to get competing factions and interests and individuals to get in the same room and form what he called a ‘peoples’ organization’ and to move in the same direction to take on city hall.”

Satan is an Angel

Ramban (Iyov Introduction)  In the Book of Iyov we have an event involving Satan. It is known from our Tradition that Satan is an angel that was created to prosecute and harm Man and its name means “to oppose” . According to our Sages Satan is also the Angel of Death and the Evil Inclination. Our Sages connect these names to Satan along with their belief that he is actually an angel and not a force of nature as is clear from the events being related here in Iyov and in the beginning of Bava Basra and many other places in their words. In sum they are telling us thar Satan is an angel which was created for the purpose to prosecute and harm and from his power comes adversary to man because he is the cause to the stars of destruction and bloodshed, sword and war as well as wounds, disputes and dispute that are included withinin the influence of Mars and which our Sages say are inherent in the nation of Esau which is the people who have inherited the sword and war. Also in his portion are the demons which our Sages call mazikim while the Torah refers to them as satyrs. Thus Esau’s power is as an adversery and source of harm. He is also the Angel of Death which means he can take away a person’s soul. It seems that the view of our Sages is that death for creatures that talk is not simply the end of life but requires an action done by an angel since it  involves the spiritual entity – the soul.  Satan is also refererred to as the Evil Inclination because it is the source of power of the lusting Nefesh like a fiery star. It also seems from the verses that Satan as well as other Angels act solely according to the Will of G-d and thus there is nothing in Creation that is not done through an angel which has been activated bt G-d

Kushner's Financial Link to Qatar Is a 'Ticking Time Bomb': Biographer

 https://www.newsweek.com/kushners-financial-link-qatar-ticking-time-bomb-biographer-1766537

The Kushner Company, a family business for which former President Donald Trump's son-in-law now serves as president, was facing a $1.4 billion debt payment in 2017 for a property at 666 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Around that time, Kushner—then working as a senior advisor to Trump with a focus on Middle Eastern matters—visited Qatar to discuss a blockade imposed against the country, alongside Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Following the year, the Qatar blockade was lifted, with President Trump reversing his earlier support of his arrangement. Around the same time, according to The Real Deal, Brookfield Asset Management, paid $1.28 billion for a ground-floor lease at 666 Fifth, helping the company with its debt situation. The group's second-largest stakeholder at the time was the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, leading some to accuse Kushner of trading favorable political maneuvers in order to help his family's business.

The Sordid Saga of Hunter Biden’s Laptop

 https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/hunter-biden-laptop-investigation.html

Hidden inside the laptop, according to those (almost exclusively on the right) who have reviewed the data or who trust the word of those who claim they have, is a corruption scandal that implicates not just Hunter but other members of the Biden family, including the president. The laptop details Hunter’s involvement with a Ukrainian natural-gas producer that paid him millions of dollars to serve on its board — the relationship at the center of Donald Trump’s first impeachment. It shows how a Chinese energy company directed millions of dollars in consulting fees to Hunter and his uncle. It reveals White House meetings and slush-fund dinners and wheeling and dealing, from Romania to Monte Carlo to Cafe Milano. Most important, these people claim the laptop contains proof that, despite his denials, Joe Biden — allegedly referred to in emails as “the big guy” — was fully aware of, and looking to profit from, his son’s business activities.

Brain death represents a little over 2% of hospital deaths in the U.S., according to a 2020 paper in the journal Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery. Meanwhile, brain-dead people represent the majority of deceased organ donors, according to data collected from 1988 through October 2022 by the United Network for Organ Sharing, the nonprofit that manages the nation’s organ-transplantation system. More than 100,000 people are on the national waiting list for kidneys, hearts and other organs, UNOS said.

An Israeli radio station suspended a prominent host until further notice, after he said during an on-air rant Sunday that he hoped some ultra-Orthodox Jews would use ritual phylacteries to hang themselves, implying he was referring to Haredi lawmakers.

Natan Zahavi, known for his blunt style and frequent rants on various issues, made the remarks on Radio 103FM, while railing at Haredi political leadership.

Esau was the first victim

Researching the current fad for being the biggest nebach i.e. victim. I would like to nominate the original red neck - Esau. Why do Orthodox Jews want to emulate him? Esau was deceived by his own mother and brother and forced to sell his birth right to save his life.  He was later defeated in a cosmic wrestling match and cheated out of marrying Leah. The real problem is that Esau is the prototype of the goy - so why aspire to be like him? Yitzchok seemed to be his only champion and admirer According to Malbim Yitzchok envisioned a partnership between the worldly manly Esau and the delicate yeshiva avreich in Yaakov.

Critics Call It Theocratic and Authoritarian. Young Conservatives Call It an Exciting New Legal Theory.

 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/12/09/revolutionary-conservative-legal-philosophy-courts-00069201

Does originalism — the theory of constitutional interpretation that conservatives have championed for the past 40 years — provide the conservative movement with the sort of intellectual ammunition that it needs to tear down half a century of liberal jurisprudence and rebuild American law on more conservative foundations? Or is it time, now that conservatives have secured a decisive majority on the Supreme Court, for the right to embrace a more aggressive and ideologically assertive legal theory?
