U.K. Ban on Some Weapons to Israel Signals Diplomatic Shift

The U.K.’s decision to bar the export of some weapons to Israel shows how even staunch Western allies are looking for ways to press Israel to end the war in Gaza without depriving the country of the weapons it needs to defend itself.

“When a country that is considered one of Israel’s major allies, comes and says, ‘we can no longer sell you weapons,’ it points to a shift in Israel’s international reputation,” said Neve Gordon, a professor of human-rights law at Queen Mary University of London. “This political shift can have a domino effect.”

  1. "we can no longer sell you weapons" because our Muslim population is controlling us now and we will do anything to mollify them, including tossing you into the dumpster.
"Without depriving the country of the weaspons it needs to defend itself" means Israel can defend itself from attacks but can never hit back, lest it offend the attacker.

  2. There are elements to this that are true. However, in 1973, the conservative government led by Edward heath placed a ban on arms sales to Israel during the Yom Kippur war. Margaret Thatcher did this in 1982 despite having a number of Jewish members in her cabinet. When she was asked about it, she said that an arms boycott will help the country develop its own indigenous military industry. 馃ぃ Which is ironically true since Israel now exports more arms to the UK than it imports.

    1. Yes, under Ehud Barak, most arms development was offshored to the US and elsewhere. Israel needs to be self sufficient in this regard.
