The core of this new antisemitism lies in the idea that Jews are not a historically oppressed people seeking self-preservation but instead oppressors: imperialists, colonialists, and even white supremacists. This view preserves vestiges of the trope that Jews exercise vast power. It creatively updates that narrative to contemporary circumstances and current cultural preoccupations with the nature of power and injustice.
There's a whole essay I could write but here's the quick summary
ReplyDeleteTraditional Jew-hatred was religious. We rejected their saviour. We rejected their prophet. There was a solution though. We could convert and be accepted by them.
Modern Jew-hatred, anti-Semitism, was racial. We were intrinsically evil because of our Jewishness so conversion could never save us. This was the approach of the Nazis, y"sh, and the Soviets, y"sh. It's what all the big liberal Jewish defense groups like the ADL were trained to fight.
Post-modern Jew-hatred is a combination of the two. It's religious in that a Jew is hated because he is a colonial phobic oppressor. It allows a Jew to "convert" if he renounces Judaism and Israel and espouses hatred of both. But it keeps him down as a second class "ally" because he's still a Jew and the evil essence is there.
And that's what the ADL doesn't get when it obsesses over neo-Nazis but misses out on what's happening at Harvard.
