Haredi parties were at forefront of overhaul push. Then they weren’t. What changed?

Over the past week, as the government’s judicial shakeup ground to a dramatic (if temporary) halt amid ever-growing opposition and the coalition’s own profound political errors, something strange happened to Benjamin Netanyahu’s Haredi coalition partners, the parties Shas and United Torah Judaism.

Everyone suddenly noticed that they had transformed from the most avid supporters of the sweeping judicial reform to the most pragmatic and moderating influence in the coalition.

  1. The Chareidi parties are consummate prostitutes and in the past, that mean they could serve in left or right governments. That has changed. They burnt any bridges that might have be built with Lapid. Liberman won't sit with them. What's left of Labour won't sit with them. Their only means of continued to suck the life out of the public treasury is an ongoing Likud government. But here's the problem - the leader is a criminal and just to their left are a bunch of Kahanist whose incompetence becomes more brazenly obvious every day. If an election were held tomorrow, Lapid would be back with his Frankenstein coalition and they'd be out, and they know it. It's now in their interest to act like grownups to keep this government in power.

  2. Wow! Bias? Prejudice? What inflammatory language for someone who prides himself on being the only rational thinker

  4. could use the word "mercenary" instead of what you did use and still convey the message, in fact convey it better.

The wider problem is that the 2 Hareidi parties have snagged onto the fact that the coalition is in danger. But Bibi and his right wing extremist parties led by Smotty and Gvir are only making things worse.

  5. Leadership requires balancing ideals and pragmaticism. Problem being a coalition composed of either pragmatist or idealists

  6. If you look at Bibi's recent behaviour, it is irrational - he fires the most experienced military man for speaking the truth, yet needs to bribe B. Gvir, who is the most inexperienced, to accept the very truth spoken by Gallant.
