Quick Take
A viral meme distorts the facts about the Iran nuclear agreement. The deal, approved by six countries and the European Union, gave Iran access to its own frozen assets.
Full Story
As a candidate during the 2016 campaign, President Donald Trump criticized the international agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear weapons’ program — formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — that had been adopted the year before. He suggested that the U.S. had returned $150 billion to Iran as part of the deal.
That’s not true. We’ve written about this issue before. PolitiFact and the Washington Post have, too.
But Trump has repeated the claim as recently as December, when he tweeted: “The Democrats and President Obama gave Iran 150 Billion Dollars and got nothing, but they can’t give 5 Billion Dollars for National Security and a Wall?”
Trump’s bogus claim now has been repeated in a meme that references the president’s declaration of a national emergency to redirect federal funds for a proposed wall on the southern border.

The following Drush is my own innovation. I don't claim it is Torah, er se; but it is based on a Posuk.
ReplyDeleteG-d asks Moshe: What is in your hand?
Moshe answers: A staff.
In Hebrew, "what is" is "Mah Zeh."
In the Torah these words, in an unusual manner, are contracted to "Mazeh".
In Hebrew, "Mateh" is "staff".
So, my interpretation:
G-d, as if it can be expressed this way, intentionally mispronounced the word for staff. The way the words are written in the Torah, the exchange could be understood the following way.
G-D: A Mazeh is on your hand.
Moshe ["correcting G-d]: Mateh.
What is going on? G-d is teaching Moshe Rabbeinu, the teacher of the nation, how to engage people in learning: say something that the student feels is somewhat right but has something wrong in it, too.
It's the same idea of leaving the world a little bit unfinished as part of what is incorporated into Creation. Or when a teacher said, "Yaakov never died," or 127 provinces of Achashverosh corresponds to 127 years of Sarah's life. It's a technique to draw people in.
Donald Trump is a genius at this technique. He exaggerates. His opponents make a big deal out of it, and in the process we find out there is some truth in what he said.
In this way candidate, now President, soon to be Emperor, Trump leverages his opponents ire to get out his message.
So he didn't "give" 150 billion dollars. He did give them an agreement that lets them develop nukes with the blessings of the world. He did give them an agreement that the US will help defend Iran against any attacks on its nuclear facilities. He did give them legitimacy and treat them like they were honest and honourable. So no, he didn't give them 150 billion dollars, just everything else.

Politics is not like halacha. And even halacha does not mean I need to follow the masses, a single decent opinion can be relied upon, even if the WaPo rebbe disagrees.
