The primary factors were the fact that the Igros Moshe is the main source of contemporary halacha, it was hard to find anything in it, I had a dissertation advisor who caused me to have a lot of spare time while she passed judgment on my work and I had purchased a computer in order to analyze my data for my dissertation which was also very good at sorting index entries.
