Supreme Court justice temporarily freezes implementation of newly-passed law halting the arrest of haredi draft evaders, orders State to justify.
On Tuesday, the Knesset plenum approved legislation to halt the arrests of haredi draft dodgers in its second and third readings with a majority of 58 votes against 54.
MK Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism) slammed the Supreme Court's decision, claiming that it is not legal, and that any soldier or police officer who participates in arresting haredi draft-evaders will be acting in violation of the law.
A conundrum for Shlomo HaMelech to solve.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand the Supreme Court has arrogated too much power to itself to the point that it is essentially running the country. This is the true threat to democracy as opposed to what the Kaplanists like to claim.
On the other hand this government is so incredibly corrupt and taking steps to weaken the economy, the army and the education system in order to satisfy a community of parasites who use their political power to harm everyone else. But it's what the electorate choice. That's democracy.
So who would you rather have running things?
The supreme court with all its faults is there to provide checks and balances against automatic or corrupt government..
DeleteThe Harady draught Dodgers are heading towards an Erdogan styled theocracy, with Bibi or his successor dancing to their niggun. Although The early sources tell Torah scholars to stay away from power this is a movement towards Islamic style government. They cannot impose their will on people who do not want it.
There should only be one representative seat for these groups who oppose military service, not a full-blown voting block. That's how minorities are in The Iranian parliament.

This is similar to my suggestion that any Rav who works for the Rabbanut must hang an Israeli flag in his office and start his day singing HaTikvah.
DeleteThe Achilles heel of democracy is the risk that a hostile minority which hates its own country will grow to a size where it can control politics, undermine democracy and destroy that country.
We're seeing it across Europe with the Muslims. We're seeing it in Israel with Chareidim. A democracy thrives on shared history and destiny and the Chareidim share neither with the rest of the country.
Then why did secular right and dati leumi MKs vote for the exemption of haredim? Considering that many DL soldiers have sadly been killed in the war.
