In recent decades, studies have revealed children are often assaulted by adults close to them, improving society’s understanding of grooming and transforming the way adults should speak to children about sexual abuse, Jeglic says. While children have long been warned about “stranger danger,” past generations of youth were not equipped to recognize or report abuse at the hands of adults they knew and trusted.
