OpEd:Corona Virus Crisis- Simshalom

NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS OR SEEMS WHAT IT IS:

Post Purim Thoughts On Dealing With, And Overcoming, The Corona Virus Crisis

It's early 2020 and the world is in turmoil, it is facing a perilous existential threat, or so it seems. For the Jewish People, and for humanity at large, this is nothing new, in spite of the Corona virus being called "novel".

I had some thoughts this past Purim as the Megillah of Esther was being read and as my mind inevitably tied the events of the past with current events. And it struck me that nothing is ever what it seems nor does it seem what it is, and how this applies to the present Corona virus crisis and how to frame it and hopefully freeze it once and for all.

The Megillah of Esther records how two and a half millennia ago, after the Jews from the Kingdom of Judah were conquered by the Babylonians they found themselves in Galut, in bitter exile in an alien land. Things seemed very bleak for the Jews, former citizens of Judah. Soon though, Babylonia fell and the new empire of Persia arose and took over with a new king, Achashverosh known as Ahasueres or Xerxes in English, who at the pinnacle of his power decided to, what else, throw massive banquets and balls to enthrall all, gentile and Jew alike, with booze galore. The king and his exceedingly beautiful queen, Vashti were needless to say full of vigor, passion and love, and intoxicated with both drink and power and each other. It seemed that nothing could go wrong.

King Achashverosh then got it into his head to demand of queen Vashti to come and display her physical beauty in all its raw power, but she adamantly refused. The king was outraged, humiliated and flabbergasted, and it cost Vashti her head. So this is what all the wild partying resulted in, the beheading of the queen, which in turn sent the king into depression and spasms of withdrawal symptoms regretting his hasty punitive actions against his late beloved executed queen. What a turnaround indeed.

The next step was to organize an empire-wide search for a new queen based on a beauty pageant. This impacts Esther and Mordechai a Jewish couple who were living a quiet domestic life somewhere in the Persian exile, as Esther is kidnapped to appear in the imperial beauty pageant. As fate would have it it is the inscrutable Esther, her name is related to the word HESTER in Hebrew, which means "hidden" appropriately enough, who is chosen as a new wife for King Achashverosh and hence as the new Royal Highness Queen of the mighty Persian Empire. Yet she kept her mouth shut through all of this and did not reveal her Jewish nationality so that truly nothing seemed what it is. What a terrific turnaround of fortune!

Then we have the evil Machiavellian Haman and his equally scheming wife the cursed Zeresh who are driven crazy by the brazen Jewish pride and defiance of Mordechai the Jew, or Mordechai HaYehudi as he is known in Hebrew, and by their visceral hatred of all Jews and everything Jewish. For Mordechai the leader of the Jews they prepare a gallows in their yard but it will be Haman's neck that will hang from that tree. This is not the way it seemed to Haman and Zeresh at the time they were conniving to harm world Jewry, then centered in Shushan the Persian capital.

You also have the Amalakite Haman and the indifferent FDRoosevelt Achashverosh, like a Himmler-Hitler duo, plotting the entrapment and genocide of all Jews in the Persian empire. Oh, they were so jolly as they sealed their pact to annihilate the Jews with a drink. Ho, ho, ho, and ha, ha, ha, and bottoms up, you can just hear them chuckling as they cook up their own Final Solution to the infernal eternal Jewish Question. But their planned-for Holocaust was not to be because it was not as it seemed, evidently fate, or better yet, God had other plans! Mordechai's wisdom and Esther's smarts outwits Haman's schemes while Esther asks the Jews to pray and fast for her success as she then turns a supposed banquet into a tribunal sealing Haman's fate when she pivot's Achashverosh's love for her, and in the process revealing her true nationality as a Jew, inducing Achashverosh to override his prior decrees against the Jews and sending Haman to the gallows. And so a day fated to be a day of gloom and doom turned around to become a festival of light and life for the Jews, celebrated as Purim to this day. Absolutely nothing seemed what it is.

Incidentally, in the actual Megillah of Esther the name of God is not explicitly mentioned in the narrative. Yet all the while, the intelligent, informed and faithful reader, in the literal sense, knows that God is pulling all the strings as the Divine Puppeteer guiding each individual and the world to its unavoidable destiny and denouement fulfilling His Master Plan as nothing remains what it seems and nothing seems what it is in a kaleidoscope of changing and cascading scenarios, as scene after scene, act after act, play after play transforms, transmutates and transcends until the world comes to the climax and crescendo that God Almighty wants it to arrive at in spite of all efforts and appearances to the contrary.

This may be a good point to just stop and think about the Holocaust during World War Two during 1939-1945 when six million Jews were massacred by a latter day real life Haman Hitler and his Nazi hordes and co-conspirators, relying on an indifferent latter day what-me-worry Achashverosh FDRoosevelt. One out of every three Jews in the world was murdered during  the Holocaust, and about 75-85 million people in the world died, all as victims of one crazed sub-human's desire for an Endlossing, a Final Solution to the Jewish Question. So many times, before, during and after that bitter conflagration nothing seemed what it is, nor was what it seemed.

Yet, still and all, humanity survived and came out the better for it. The Jewish people revived in the New World especially in America and then in Israel, and the growth continues. The world too saw a new age of abundance, technology and the dawn of both the Information and Leisure Age, that is now imperiled by an invisible viral threat. But as we should know by now, nothing ever remains the way it seems. The one constant is change, and no matter how many changes there are much remains constant. A true paradox if ever there was one.

After Purim comes Pesach, Passover, another era when nothing seemed what it is. From the highs of Jewish freedom and comfort in ancient Egypt during the reign of Viceroy Joseph, to the turnaround of slave bondage under later Pharaohs to a reversal of fortunes under the leadership of Moshe, Moses, sent by God to redeem the enslaved Children of Israel by hitting ancient Egypt with Ten Plagues, then splitting the Red Sea, with miracle after miracle making what seemed impossible yesterday to be the new reality of tomorrow so many times over to the point where from the lowest rungs of impurity the Children of Israel rose to heights of immortality at the Revelation of God and the giving of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. But what seemed ineluctable and inevitable was also overturned as in frustration the Children of Israel sinned by worshipping a Golden Calf and their world, and ours by continuous extension came crashing down.

But what comes down, must rise yet again, and ever since the Sin of the Golden Calf, echoing the Sin of Adam and Eve eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, humankind is fated and tugged, pulled and pushed by Divine Forces onwards, sometimes falling seven or seven umpteen times over, to pull themselves up by the bootstraps and try all over and over and over again and again and again...

Coming back to PURIM, it is connected to YOM KIPPUR, or Yom HaKipurim in Hebrew, "Ke-Purim" means "like Purim" in Hebrew. In what way is Yom Kippur "like" Purim? The Jewish Sages explain that Purim so to speak clarifies the decrees and choices of Yom Kippur. How so? On Yom Kippur the Torah instructs the priests to take two identical goats and by means of a lottery (another connection to the "lots" drawn by Haman) whereby one goat will be offered up on the altar of the Jewish Temple as a sacrificial offering to God, while the other goat will be chosen to be tossed over a cliff as an appeasement to Azazel, aka Beelzebub.

In the greater historical scheme of things it is symbolically decided on Purim who comes out on top so to speak. Will the forces of light and life or the forces of darkness and death triumph? Who wins, Haman or Mordechai? Will the Jews succumb to the forces of death or will they be enveloped in life-saving salvation from God?

Purim is the historical paradigm of an answer to these questions, and more than that. Since it is never what it seems, even though the situation looked hopeless in the face of Haman's machinations coming out of the palace of Achashverosh, just as the situation looked hopeless for the Children of Israel 3,300+ years ago under the evil yoke of the Pharaohs, and as bad as it looked for world Jewry at the height of the Holocaust as Hitler's insatiable appetite for gobbling up country after country mounted to an insane frenzy, and as Russia and China marched to paint the world Red under Communism until Chernobyl and Covid entangled them in their own snares. The hunters who laid traps for others became the hunted. Nothing that once seemed like a reality to them turns out to be what it really is.

So now we face a Corona virus crisis. This too shall pass, or as they say in Hebrew, Gam Zu Yaavor (or as another idiom states: Gam Zu LETOVAH, this too is for the GOOD) but at what cost? We do not know. It might pass us over like the Angel of Death PASSED OVER hence PASSOVER, the houses of the Children of Israel during the plague killing the first born of the Egyptians, or will it be like the plague of darkness where the rabbis interpret that four fifths of the Israelites died resulting in only one in five Israelites leaving Egypt alive? Or will it be like the European Holocaust that saw the extinction of one out of every three Jews and a huge chunk of humanity go down the tubes? No one knows how the Corona virus plague will play out in the world.

Only a few months ago, China seemed on such a roll, they had become a global superpower armed with mountains of money and thermonuclear weapons. Who knows what they could have been plotting to do with all their financial and nuclear power? World domination? Regional conquest? Colonization of the globe? Imperial ambitions they had plenty. They forgot what happened at places like Dresden, Stalingrad, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl, Fukushima. Drunk with power and flush with cash they were on a roll. But no more. Now they are the COVID-19 nation. Stuck in the mud and defeated by the proverbial "General Winter"! Trouble is they are dragging everyone down with them, so that everyone is now getting a good spanking.

By the way, paradoxically enough the word "COVID" means "honor" in Hebrew. Funny how names for plagues are the opposite of what they mean nowadays, such as AIDS (what and who does it "aid" exactly?) which should really be called PLAGUES, and GAY (who and what are they so "gay" about?) which should really be called ABOMINATION, and on it goes with these crazy pseudonyms, intended or unintended. Nothing is what it seems, ever.

Who knows what God is saving us from? A Chinese inspired World War 3? He sent the HIV virus but nobody paid attention. Maybe God doesn't like Gays after all, he said homosexuality is an "abomination" Toeiva in Hebrew, in the Torah. Now with Covid, people are perking up. Let them grapple with a virus and develop some real COVID-real HONOR for mankind and God instead. A nuclear war launched by an arrogant China? where instead of all of us running for cover from Made in China hydrogen bombs as mushroom clouds spiral skyward and radioactive clouds shower humanity with ashen radioactive fallout, instead nations now scramble to find a vaccine to cure the Corona virus. We cannot know if we are privileged to be treated to the lesser of two evils by God who is saving us from an even worse fate. Since nothing is what it seems, this could be the tough-love medicine needed to avoid an even worse crisis and outcome.

On the High Holy Days, we beg God that with Teshuva, Tefilla, Tzedaka, with Repentance, Prayer, Charity, the evil decree(s) are overcome. This is so clear, it speaks for itself. Teshuva-Repentance means change at least one negative trait into a positive way of acting, Tefilla-Prayer means say a little prayer, just thank God that you are alive and healthy and if not so healthy that God should cure you, He is the Rofeh Cholim, the Healer-Doctor of the Sick, and Tzedaka means give Charity, as liberally as possible by you to a worthy Jewish cause. Another set of interpretations is Teshuva-Return, return to your good roots and to God Himself, Tefilla-Connect to yourself to a greater humanity and to God Himself, and Tzedaka-Righteousness, become a more righteous person, you are created in the Image of God, Tzelem Elokim, the world is built on Chesed, Loving-Kindness, show more Ahavas Yisroel, love of your fellow Jews and Ahavas HaBrios love of all Humankind. The Corona virus, like Nazism does not differentiate between people. In the end Hitler's hatreds consumed everyone and destroyed Germany as well. China's greed and hubris has made it into its own victim and into an international pariah.

In Hebrew we say Chazak, Chazak, Venitchazek when concluding one of the Books of the Torah. It means: Be Strong, Be Strong and Let Us Be Strengthened!

In the meantime, as they say in Yiddish, ZAI GEZUNT, be well, and stay healthy and safe

Trump Contradicts Experts as Coronavirus Is Declared a Pandemic: A Closer Look

Divine Restraint

BS"D

Divine Restraint

by Binyomin Feinberg

Parshas Kee Sissa, 5780

15 Adar, Shushan Purim (March 11, '20)

~~~~~~
~~~~~~

1.  B"H, we rejoice over the recent freeing of two female Jewish Refuseniks, who had been imprisoned in Israeli Military Prison Four - Lital bas Miriam and Tal Talya bas Liz. We know that Lital (about whom we had more information) had been badly mistreated for the approximately six weeks for which she was held. She was even punished, twice, with "Bidud" (Solitary Confinement, a term which has rapidly become a household word, in the wake of the Corona epidemic).

2. May all of the others girls suffering in Israel's gulags, over their refusal to serve the men of the IDF (female captives often numbering in the double digits) soon merit freedom as well. And may we merit to share even a tiny portion of the merit of all the others standing up to the harassment and intimidation of the Israeli government, which is seeking to force them into enlisting, Refuseniks like Ziva bas Mazal, and Olga Shamilov (Jewish Press, Nov.15, '19, p.17).

Alarmingly, the Israeli government appears to be clamping down own allowing information out from behind their Sabra* rendition of the Iron Curtain.

{*"Sabra" refers to a cactus, and is a term used to refer to those born and raised in the state of Israel.}

Therefore, we don't have all of the information that we need to help these captive girls, Refuseniks whom the government condemns to suffer in silent anonymity.

3.  For instance, we would like more information about Volga (about 23 y/o), from Eastern Europe, who'd been incarcerated in Military Prison Six. We're informed that she sincerely wants to convert to Judaism, despite the torment she's been enduring by Hellenist "Jews."

4. In this particular case, just think about the Chillul HaShem (Desecration of the Divine Name) alone: A non-Jewish girl, living in Israel, being persecuted - by an ostensibly Jewish government - for refusing to be drafted into the notoriously promiscuous and exploitive Israeli military -- while almost no non-Jewish military in the world *forces* girls to serve.

5.  This terrible desecration of the Divine Name wouldn't be as bad if only it would be clear to all that the perpetrators of this abomination have nothing to do with Jews or Judaism. But, unfortunately, that clarity is being unrelenting obfuscated, by those who insist on identifying the enemies of Torah with the Nation of the Torah. It is as if this ongoing charade is some type of Hollywood production that goes on and on, mandating perpetual "Willing Suspension of Disbelief."

6.  Did any leading Rabbis, - in the national religious camp otherwise - ever seriously entertain the notion that these antireligious Israelis, of ostensibly Jewish extraction, actually constitute a representation of the Jewish religion? Even those who felt the need to adopt various positions on statehood were united in the Rabbinic opposition to drafting girls - any girls. (And Ben-Gurion knew it.)

7.  Our Sages instruct us to give credit to those who perform a mitzvah, "Me'farsemin o'sei mitzvah." Why do those who perform good acts need to be publicly acknowledged? Perhaps to ensure that those trying to impede them don't take the credit. Additionally, identifying them is  necessary to prevent them from being blamed by post-facto "heroes" for "obstructing progress."

7. Accordingly, credit is due to those who assisted in putting public pressure on the Israeli government to release Lital, Talya, and others who have been held as prisoners of conscience. And credit is likewise due all those who offered and provided assistance to Lital and her family throughout her incarceration, since her stealth arrest on Jan. 13, '20.  Although it's not possible to give credit to all of the deserving parties, special mention of a few is appropriate here. We'd like to acknowledge the work of those who helped to bring the plight of Lital bas Miriam and other female Refuseniks to the attention of the international community outside the Israeli Holocaust Forum Photo-Op (including a poster appealing directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin), as well as those who informed the American Embassy. In appears that it is only because of the protests and other efforts of volunteer activists that Lital went from being blackmailed into taking a six MONTH plea deal - to being released - all within a matter of weeks (although her ordeal may not be fully past her).

8. We say in Ma'ariv (the daily evening prayer), after Kriyas Shema, immediately after the mentioning of the Redemption from Egypt: "... ve'Ro'uh vo'nov Gevura'soh," literally, "and His Children (the Jewish People) beheld His (G-d's) Strength."

The simple meaning of that is that, at the crossing of the Red Sea, the Jewish People beheld what was  the greatest public manifestation of Divine Power in human history. More specifically, individual Jews who had been persecuted at the hands of Egyptian tormentors witnessed the Divine Retribution visited on each and every Egyptian perpetrator, "Measure For Measure" (Midah Keneged Midah, see Talmud tractate Sotah 8b-9a). [See Ha'amek Davar (of Rav Naftoli Tzvi Yehuda Berlin) on Shemos 14:31 regarding the Midah Keneged Midah they witnessed.]

On a deeper level, perhaps, one can suggest the following additional observation. The Talmud acknowledges two types of Gevura, strength: power and restraint (see Pirkei Avos 4:1). The Talmud also employs the term of "Gevura" as "restraint" with respect to G-d Himself (tractate Yoma 69b).

Perhaps this is the type of "Gevura" alluded to in the aforementioned prayer. It was precisely when the Jewish People saw the manifestation of the Divine Retribution - Divine Wrath that was (so to speak) "pent up" for over eighty long, tortuous years of Jewish persecution - that they merited a tiny glimpse of the magnitude of Divine Restraint - retroactively - over all of those dark decades. NOW they realized what they hadn't seen heretofore. It was now that they saw in front of their own eyes what G-d "wanted to do" for all those years of persecution, during which He "restrained Himself" (so to speak).

9.  This is a lesson acutely needed in our age, when we encounter arrogance of ignorance in the form of some people questioning "where was/is G-d?" in the face of human butchery and persecution.

10.  It's also a lesson acutely needed to strengthen the resolve of those dedicated to combating ongoing human wickedness, often with little tangible solace, and without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

In this context, current events take on a deeper meaning. In fact, for those with a broader perspective, current events can serve as a source of inspiration particularly for those engaged in the painstaking work on behalf of saving those being persecuted by the Israeli military and government, a fundamentally antireligious regime - hellbent on drafting girls into the "Miz'ron Tzahali" Paradigm:

Solitary Confinement is Not Just for Army Refuseniks Anymore:

11.  According to the Israeli military, 2,236 soldiers are currently in isolation due to the Corona outbreak. While most of them are returning from vacations abroad, others were exposed to Corona carriers.
Furthermore, Army Chief of Staff Kochavi reportedly said that a "stern approach will be employed" to prevent a need to place large numbers of soldiers in isolation.

According to JNS, "Like all Israeli citizens, IDF personnel who returned to Israel from abroad from Monday onwards must enter a 14-day isolation period. The military has banned handshakes. No more than 120 people can gather in closed military structures. The entry of civilian contractors onto IDF bases has become far more restrictive. All other civilians have been banned from visiting IDF units. Soldiers have received instructions to contact the Medical Corps’ call centers if they detect any of the disease’s symptoms and have been abroad over the past two weeks." (March 11, https://www.jns.org/idf-steps-up-preparations-to-battle-new-foe-coronavirus/)

12.  Without addressing reasons for the personal suffering of specific individuals, we can make some general observations.  For years, many, many Israeli girls have been suffering from SYSTEMIC, antireligious Israeli government persecution, over their resolute stand against violating their personal purity, and Torah Law, by enlistment in the notoriously exploitive and immoral Army.

Many were subjected to incarceration, some even placed into the emotionally excruciating punishment of military Solitary Confinement, "Bidud," e.g. the B'nos Bruria and Lidar Shira bas Yaffa L. (as reported in June-July '19), and Lital bas Miriam.

13.  The Israeli government wanted to make those girls feel that they were all alone, in their battle against the human trafficking professionals of the Army.

14.  G-d is now showing the persecutors of those righteous women a slight foretaste of Divine Justice. Now "Bidud" is a household word. And, who knows, perhaps this is just the beginning.

15.  May we share in the merit of these and other brave souls - by taking up their cause, even when it means exiting our personal comfort zone. And, in that merit, may we witness  the salvation of the Jewish People from all of our enemies, external and internal, speedily.

Shir haShirim and Rav Breuer's son

Wife subordinate to husband to degree he is subordinate to G-d

Netziv(Bereishis 2:24): therefore a man should leave his  father and mother and cleave to his wife – from this we learn the advice that the only way to deal with with his lust and feeling he is lacking a ezer kenegdo must be in the following manner he must leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife and then they will be they will be one flesh That he will love her also as they are like a single person as it states in Yevamos (62b): that if a man loves his wife as himself and also then she will not be entirely subordinate as was the first wife who was viewed as an integral part of him but rather as one flesh. So just as he is concerned with what is good for him and he wants wants to fulfill her wants entirely. Similarly she should also do that when she wants to do what is best for herself and he will fulfill her wishes. Nevertheless  since the causes of the first woman are an inherent part of her nature therefore she remains in her existence as a helper(facilitator). Even though she was not that way initially but became that after eating from the Tree of Knowledge – as we will explain in verse (Bereishis 3:20): this is included in the creation of the world on the 6th day. And only one who merits this  obtains love from his wife with total abnegation as Eve was before the Sin. Therefore  there are two types of cleaving of  Adam and Eve In order that there be for all time  two types of love of a wife to her husband and similarly the manner of a person in serving G-d. All this was done on the first day when they were created as we will see in Bereishis 2:4). Thus was their nature made to have love of the woman and her life with the man. Just as Ben Azai  says at the end Kidushin. “I was created to serve my Master. And they were created to serve me.” To the degree man serves G-d, his wife will serve him or it will be determined by Mazal as is true for all aspects of man. Which comes about through Divine providence according to his deeds either with good or bad Mazal as is the principle governing the world

Analysis: Facing virus outbreak, Trump’s tactics fall short

https://apnews.com/3441fea7832f3c4a1e45efa87fa2f29e
The escalating coronavirus crisis is presenting President Donald Trump with a challenge for which he appears ill-equipped, his favorite political tactics ineffective and his reelection chances in jeopardy.
A rare crisis battering the White House that is not of the president’s own making, the spreading coronavirus has panicked global financial markets and alarmed Americans, many of whom have turned to the Oval Office for guidance and reassurances. But what they have found is a president struggling for a solution, unable to settle Wall Street and proving particularly vulnerable to a threat that is out of his control.
In an address to the nation Wednesday night, Trump announced a sweeping travel ban for much of Europe as well as a package of proposals to help steady the teetering economy. But he continued to play down the severity of the situation, painting it as a foreign threat that soon will be banished rather than focusing on managing the growing number of cases at home.
“This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history,” Trump declared.
Addressing the economic costs, he added, “This is not a financial crisis, this is just a temporary moment of time that we will overcome together as a nation and as a world.
But the virus has appeared impervious to the president’s bluster.
The virus does not have a Twitter account and, unlike so many previous Trump foes, is resistant to political bullying or Republican Party solidarity. It has preyed on his lack of curiosity and fears of germs while exposing divides and inadequacies within senior levels of his administration. It has taken away Trump’s favorite political tool, his rallies, from which he draws energy and coveted voter information.
And eight months from Election Day, it has endangered his best reelection argument — a strong economy — just as Joe Biden, the candidate emerging from the Democratic field, seems poised to take advantage of a political landscape upended by the virus.

‘He’s gonna get us all killed’: sense of unease after Trump coronavirus speech

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/11/donald-trump-us-coronavirus-address

Donald Trump’s first Oval Office address – that almost sacred altar for US presidents on prime time television – came in January 2019 amid a partial government shutdown and asserted that only a border wall can keep out dangerous illegal immigrants.
His second such address on Wednesday night was again couched in terms around the need to resist a foreign invasion that is someone else’s fault. The problem is that the coronavirus is already inside America and spreading.
And the message was delivered by a 73-year-old man with a sniffing habit who did not seem to be a glowing picture of health nor entirely at ease reading from a TelePrompter. His bold assertion last week – “I like this stuff. I really get it … Maybe I have a natural ability.” – seemed even more incredible than before.

Many observers found the address unreassuring and downright weird. Susan Glasser, a staff writer from the New Yorker, tweeted: “The militaristic, nationalistic language of Trump’s speech tonight is striking: a ‘foreign virus,’ keeping out China and Europe.”
David Litt, who wrote speeches for Obama, posted: “As a former presidential speechwriter, my careful rhetorical analysis is that he’s gonna get us all killed.”
Trump’s second Oval Office address was over in 10 minutes. Then a man off camera said: “We’re clear.” The president unbuttoned his jacket and exclaimed with relief: “OK!”
To millions of viewers, it was anything but.

Trump’s Error-Laden ‘Foreign Virus’ Speech Has Investors Spooked

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-12/trump-s-error-laden-foreign-virus-speech-has-investors-spooked

The America First presidency collided with a global pandemic Wednesday night. The result did not appear to reassure skittish markets or a nervous nation.
President Donald Trump relied on a familiar playbook as he spoke in a prime-time address from the Oval Office, announcing sweeping new restrictions on travel from Europe and scattered executive actions to help workers and businesses rocked by what he labeled a “foreign virus.”
He blamed allies for not adopting tough immigration measures that he said had prevented a wider outbreak in the U.S. But the combative approach and small-bore measures seemed only to highlight the president’s struggles to confront the most consequential moment of his presidency.
And even in a 10-minute address, Trump couldn’t stick to the facts.

The speech clearly underwhelmed investors, who have been waiting for a “major” economic plan the president promised on Monday and has yet to put to paper.
Futures on the benchmark S&P 500 index steadily deteriorated as details of Trump’s plan leaked out over the dinnertime hours in New York. Down about 0.8% when his remarks began, the loss extended to 2% by the time the president finished speaking and got worse from there.

Why President Trump Wants to Frame COVID-19 as a 'Foreign Virus'

https://time.com/5801628/donald-trump-coronavirus-foreign/

Facing criticism for his handling of the spread of COVID-19 inside the U.S., President Donald Trump has repeatedly resorted to a familiar reflex: blame foreigners.
The country is confronting a “foreign virus,” Trump told the nation from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office on Wednesday. Travelers from Europe, he said, had “seeded” clusters of the virus in the U.S. and, as a result, his Administration is blocking travel between the U.S. and most of Europe for 30 days starting Friday at midnight.
On Tuesday, in response to a tweet about the “China Virus,” Trump wrote that the wall is “Going up fast. We need the Wall more than ever!” Within hours, Rep. Katherine Clark, a Democrat from Massachusetts, asked the director of the CDC, Robert Redfield, during a Congressional hearing whether there were any agency recommendations that border barriers would be “of any use in mitigation” the outbreak of COVID-19. “Not that I’ve seen,” Redfield said. (To say nothing of the fact that there are just 12 confirmed cases in Mexico.)
Cecilia Muñoz, who was the director of President Barack Obama’s domestic policy council from 2012 to 2017, says Trump’s repeated comments about the wall and closing the borders is “a clear signal that he’s focused on the wrong things.” The virus is already in the United States, says Muñoz. “The problem at the border is obviously a political imperative for him. That’s fine we can have that conversation, but it has nothing to with the spread of this virus,” Muñoz says.

Exclusive: The Strongest Evidence Yet That America Is Botching Coronavirus Testing

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/how-many-americans-have-been-tested-coronavirus/607597/

It’s one of the most urgent questions in the United States right now: How many people have actually been tested for the coronavirus?
This number would give a sense of how widespread the disease is, and how forceful a response to it the United States is mustering. But for days, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has refused to publish such a count, despite public anxiety and criticism from Congress. On Monday, Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, estimated that “by the end of this week, close to a million tests will be able to be performed” in the United States. On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence promised that “roughly 1.5 million tests” would be available this week.

But the number of tests performed across the country has fallen far short of those projections, despite extraordinarily high demand, The Atlantic has found.

A tweet can't knock over a pandemic': has Trump met his match in coronavirus?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/09/donald-trump-coronavirus-response

It has killed thousands, sown widespread fear and disruption and caused the worst day for Wall Street since the 2008 financial crisis. One man, however, is not panicking about the coronavirus. Donald Trump just spent two successive days on the golf course.
Even for a US president who has made a habit of denialism – from global heating to the size of Barack Obama’s inauguration crowd – the current crisis is raising the bar. One headline on Monday described it as “Trump’s Chernobyl”, a reference to the Soviet nuclear disaster that authorities could not censor away.
The commander-in-chief’s past attempts to bend reality to his will have often been met with derision or mirth. But this time it is hardly an exaggeration to say thousands of lives are at stake. The international crisis that many feared would test his norm-busting presidency has arrived.
“Denial, accusation, distraction, lies – these are his four principal responses to any rival,” said Gwenda Blair, a Trump biographer. “Only this time it’s not a person. When you think of that model, it doesn’t work with germs. A tweet doesn’t knock over a potential global pandemic.”
