Zelensky appeared to bristle at both the suggestion of ceding territory and at the prospect of talks being held without Ukraine.
“Any decisions made against us, any decisions made without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace. They will bring nothing. These are dead decisions; they will never work,” Zelensky said in a video address. He added that Ukraine "will not give Russia any awards for what it has done."
There are two parts. Crimea was part of Russia for a long time until Krushchev transferred it to Ukraine. So don't start with "And this is our ancestral territory!" It wasn't. Then there's Donetzk. The only thing that will get the Russians out of there is WW3 and I don't think it's worth that.

Britain recognized that they couldn't win in America and retreated, recognizing the new country.
How is that at all comparable to this situation?
If you want to bring in an example, you could ask why the US doesn't returned territory it captured from Mexico?
Wow! Russia invades unprovoked and kills many civilans and soldiers so it is logical to reward them for their effort?!
