I've never supported the Greenbergs but I understand where they're coming from.
ReplyDeleteThere are huge social problems in the Orthodox world that can't be solved by "Nu, just learn another blatt Gemora" or something like that.
People want the agunah problem solved. Women with high levels of Jewish education don't want to be told "Nu, your role is to make sure the cholent is tasty on Shabbos". And "The Gedolim"(tm) demand that there be no solutions. In desperation, people will look elsewhere

DeleteOne thing I can tell you from experience - people with a problem want to see the folks who could help them doing something.
DeleteTelling folks in pain "Sorry, nothing I can do here about your abusive marriage" and then announcing you've found heterim for paedophiles not to get reported to the police causes anguish.
