Maharal - pilpul without understanding text - stupifies

Maharal( Nesivos HaTorah #5): [from my sefer Daas Torah] Woe to the embarrassment and degradation that we have changed our way of learning Torah from previous generations. This change is entirely because people say they need to sharpen themselves with subtle textual analyses (pilpul). Even if there was such a need, our Sages (Berachos 63b) have said: You should first learn the text and thoroughly familiarize yourself with it before deep analysis is done…. Therefore, if analysis is to be done on the text - it is still a precondition that the text be learned. The analysis that is done today purely for sharpness - without mastering the text - in fact stupefies with utter nonsense. We see what this “sharpness” is and what it is producing. Typically, one would expect young students to be learning and mastering many tractates before marriage. However now when a student marries he has mastered nothing. This is because they are learning Tosfos - which was meant as a supplement to the gemora. They should in fact be acquiring the gemora itself first. The reason for the focus on Tosfos is simply because it was printed on the page of the gemora. If the Rosh or other halachic commentaries had been printed there instead, they would be learning Halacha instead… What is the need for the young student to be involved in subtle textual analysis in the same way as the mature student? The consequence of this misplaced focus is that the students do not achieve mastery of Halacha. If you try explaining to the students’ fathers that they should be learning Halacha and not Tosfos, they react as if you were trying to convince them that their children should stop learning Torah! This is because all the father is concerned about is that his child has a reputation as a sharp mind - rather than that he learns Torah properly…

  1. See what he writes in Gur Aryah on the Pasuk ושננתם לבניך - he blames many of our problems to this lack of clarity in Torah learning.

  2. Beautiful, יישר כחך, and oh, so important.

I am reminded of what I heard from a Rav in Brooklyn, NY, R. YMK, some years ago.

He stated (I think it was in Yiddish, but I will give it over in English here)

There were always weaker bochurim and better bochurim. So what is the difference then between now and the past? In the past, everyone knew the gemara. The better bochurim knew the mefarshim as well. Nowadays, everyone knows the mefarshim. The better bochurim know the gemara as well.

There is some hope however, as we see the popularity of the Zilberman and related approaches. Some people are aware of the situation and trying to improve things, ברוך השם. Hashem should give them strength to swim against the current (in some places) and succeed.

    3. I think that the story with Rav Shach (Which I never heard of) is very telling. Our job is to follow our Rabbeim and Mesorah. If we find an hanhaga in the Gra or Rambam, but our Rabbeim did not observe it, then neither should we. No one is questioning the Maharal, he's Kodesh Kadashim, never-the-less we have to follow our Mesorah.

    4. It is important to note that according to the above assertion - Rav Schach agreed - despite our Mesorah. In addition the new-old approach of the Maharal is very popular and becoming increasingling accepted in Israel

  8. i could just imagine, what the Maharal would say to the DERECH HALIMUD now in most of the LITVISHE yeshivos, where they learn 8 or ten BLATT in 6 months time, wasting their life and time in idiotic CHAKIRAHS and PILPULIM,,and at the end of the day, after wasting 4 or 5 years in a YESHIVA,the average ZHLOBB comes out from there,as a bonifide AM HAARETZ.the only thing he will be able to show for those 5 years in yeshiva,is a couple of completely irrelevant CHAKIRAHS from a REB CHAIM or aREB BORUCH BER
this idiotic system has destroyed and ruined whole generations of jews

  9. I must be missing something - NOBODY believes in pilpul without Pshat.

The Silberman metod concerns following the Maharal's shita of following the Mishna of Thus, talmidim obtain a tremendous BREADTH of knowledge.

Rav Shach's hesitation only concerned this issue.

Those that argue with him believe that obtaining the SKILL of knowing HOW to learn is enough, even without the BREATH of knowledge that the Maharals shita demands.

I'm pretty sure NOBODY believes that what's going on today is acceptable: A LARGE PERCENTAGE OBTAIN NEITHER BASIC SKILLS, and surely not the BREADTH of knowledge.

    1. Children seem to enjoy the Silberman approach better and they clearly acquire a greater body of knowledge. However at the same time their reasoning skills suffer from the emphasis on memorization. Therefore it is not unusual for a boy to be started in a Silberman school but then switched over to acquire the analytic skills. It seems that if the analytic skills are not acquired sometime after bar mitzva then the boy will never catch up and will be at a disadvantage
