MAHARAL PRAY FOR WELFARE OF GOVERNMENT

Crime is eliminated only if community desires to be just - G-d doesn't cause corruption

Malbim (Job 31:38 Summary): Why doesn’t G-d destroy all the wicked people in order to remove their wickedness and sustain mankind - especially since they live like the wild beasts of the forest separate from others and thus it would be possible to obligate them without harming others. … The answer lies in understanding the nature of reward and punishment. Reward and punishment is not something distinct from the commandment but is in fact inherent in the action of the commandment. For example a person who controls his lusts and desires will be healthy while one who runs after his desire for meat with become sick and be crushed by suffering. Therefore a community which strives to do good and kindness and to administer proper justice and uproot crime will live in tranquility and security without any crime and disorder. In contrast if there is perversion of justice there will be an increase in murder and robbery… G﷓d prepared the nature of man that he should gather together in communities and that people should help each other and should work to destroy criminals and murderers who destroy civilization and that they should administer proper justice in the land. By this means man will survive since the good people are always greater in number than the bad… Consequently the administering of justice to the wicked who destroy civilization has been given over to mankind who by their nature will uproot evil. If evil overcomes the good and if there is no justice then man will be no different than the fish of the sea. Thus man himself determines whether he will live under anarchy and crime. Therefore why be upset with G﷓d when society is corrupt?

  1. The Malbim is only applicable when we have our own rulers such as David hamelech or other righteous Kings and Shofetim. there is a mitzvah to carry out justice. On the other hand, rabbi Akiva says that if he was head of the Sanhedrin, there wouldn't be an execution even 1 in 70 years.

Incidentally, i read that Malbim was fighting the maskilim so badly, that he put a herem on any Kosher butchers who would sell meat to the maskilim. Assuming they would want to eat Kosher meat, when the reformists were eating chazir, then this wasn't a good example of kiruv!

  2. I once asked a Rabbis in a frum yeshiva in Israel, why they don't say the prayer for the government over there. His answer was because they do not coerce people to be religious. It is strange because at the time of the Oslo accords, even some Tzioni rabbis stopped saying the prayer for the secular/leftist government. Is this a democratic concept, where you only say the prayer if you agree with all their policies?

Also, I read in an old edition of the "Jewish Observer", which was the Agudas American /English language publication - where the Roshei yeshiva were taking turns at bashing the State of Israel. Since they were great Roshei Yeshivas, i will not mention the names. However, one argument was that the plaza in front of the Kotel has been made so elaborately that it takes away the grandeur of the Kotel itself. This kind of statement is not even worthy of a beginner, let alone a gadol hador. The Kotel is an architectural wonder or even anything to do with prayer. It is the remains of the retainer wall which Mr Herod built when he expanded the Beit Hamikdash and the area around Har habayit. The plaza is large becasue of the large number of Jews who visit the Kotel, to pray near the site of Beit Hamikdash. It was liberated in 1967 ,which is 1897 years after the destruction of the Temple.

Chazal saw how Herod restored the Temple, and made it bigger than before, even though he was not halachically Jewish, they still praised him. He was in fact a meshuga, and violent man. But he built up the temple and received praise from Chazal.

  4. Rav Avigdor Miller on Praying for the President
    https://torasavigdor.org/rav-avigdor-miller-on-praying-for-the-president/

    Question:
What do you think about the election of Carter to be our next President?

    Answer:
I haven’t the slightest knowledge about Carter. But I hope that Hakodosh Boruch Hu will give Him His blessings and give him success. Now that he’s been elected, it’s a mitzvah to daven for Carter.

It’s a mitzvah. You have to be mispallel b’shlom malchus; every Jew has to pray for the benefit of the government. Now that he’s been elected, we daven he should be well; he shouldn’t catch a cold. He shouldn’t be bothered by the liberals. He shouldn’t have any wars in his time. (Yirmiyahu 23:6), in his time the Jewish people should be happy and prosperous and Moshiach should come. That’s the best I can tell you.

And that’s our duty, to pray for Carter. Every Jew has to pray for Carter. And you have to still pray for Ford by the way, because he’s still President until January. So for the duration of his term you have to pray for him.

A Jew must pray for his government. It’s very important. It’s a mishna in Mesichta Avos (3:2); plain and simple we must pray for the government. And even if you haven’t done it till now, it’s a good time to begin. From now on think about it sometimes, and say it. Even when you’re on the street walking, say a little prayer for the President and for the Vice-president, and don’t be ashamed. Don’t worry that you might be ridiculed by somebody – let nobody know about it. But you should know that you’re doing the duty of an Orthodox Jew.

You must pray for the government! Not because you want to show the government that you pray for them. The fakers come together and wave flags, and they make an official prayer – that doesn’t mean a thing. They’re not praying for the government, they’re just showing off. Pray for the government quietly between yourself and Hashem. And you should really mean it. Have in mind that Carter should be well and that he shouldn’t have troubles. He shouldn’t fight with his wife. He should have peace at home and peace in the government. Congress should cooperate with him. There’s no question that if there will be a tranquil government, then Carter will try to make a good name for himself. No question about it. Any President would like to make a regime that will go down in history as a successful regime.

And so, our best wishes are given to the incumbent, President-elect Carter, and Hakodosh Boruch Hu should help him – and us.

  5. "The Malbim escalated his struggle against the "enlighteners"
in Bucharest by forbidding the local kosher slaughterers to slaughter
for them, enforcing his ban by means of an oath and threat of
excommunication. He prohibited the consumption of meat from animals
slaughtered by two ritual slaughterers who broke the oath. By
doing so, he increased the number of his enemies and caused tension
between himself, the local slaughterers, and the rabbinical judges,
because he enforced total authority over them.. The government
withdrew its official recognition of the community and of the
Malbim as its Chief Rabbi, prohibiting him from delivering sermons
in the Great Synagogue. In addition to this his family life was
upset and, worst of all, his son Aharon died in his youth and
was buried in the Bucharest cemetery in 1862. This had a severe
    impact on the Malbim."

  6. Good try, but no cigar. Sorry.

Your "source" indicates something quite different than what you alleged:

"The Malbim escalated his struggle against the "enlighteners" in Bucharest by forbidding the local kosher slaughterers to slaughter for them, enforcing his ban by means of an oath and threat of excommunication. He prohibited the consumption of meat from animals slaughtered by two ritual slaughterers who broke the oath."

A little background history. The "enlighteners" had organized as a separate breakaway community, which was intended to destroy the power of the Orthodox. In defense, the Malbim ostracized them, and ordered the local kosher slaughterers not to slaughter for their separate community, which would give them legitimacy. He likewise prohibited the consumption of meat from animals slaughtered by two ritual slaughterers who broke the embargo.

This is a far cry from your claim.

This did NOT mean that "He put a herem on any Kosher butchers who would sell meat to the maskilim.", which would imply that he would prefer them to eat treif or chazir, rather than even sell them kosher meat.

No. The maskilim could still come to the local Orthodox butcher, and make their purchase there. The only thing that the Malbim was fighting, was the establishment of the renegade community.

  7. "The maskilim could still come to the local Orthodox butcher, and make their purchases there."
How do you know this? Can you give a source or is it your interpretation of the article?
And, actually, what difference does it make?

I am not defending the disgusting acts of certain militants who called themselves "maskilim". How do you make the distinction between slaughtering an animal an selling meat? Perhaps the kind of butcher shop we have today is not as it was 200 years ago. Can we sell kosher meat to a reform community today? eg if they want a kosher banquet?
