But Carlson doesn’t object to the state harassing people or exercising undue power. He delights in it, as long as the state is harassing the people he hates. The cruelty, as my colleague Adam Serwer has said, is the point. This is the lodestar of the Trump and post-Trump GOP, which values owning the libs above all—not merely rhetorically, but with the fist of government. Thus Trump asserted that he had the authority to override state and local coronavirus shutdowns (before hastily backtracking when it became clear that he had no such power). He sought to involve the federal government in decisions of colleges and universities in order to muzzle speech. And he celebrated police violence, even as he moaned that he was the victim of overzealous law enforcement.

ReplyDeletePot, meet kettle. I mean, this statement describes every liberal out there. The best defence is a good offence. Beat the person you hate into a pulp while screaming "I'm the victim" and when that person actually manages to land a punch, scream "How dare you attack me!"

“Seizing the occasion, certain Chaldeans came forward to slander the Jews. They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar: O king, live forever! You, O king, gave an order that everyone who hears the horn, pipe, harp, zither, lyre, psaltery, bagpipe, and all types of instruments, must fall down and worship the golden statue,; and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be thrown into a burning fiery furnace. There are certain Jews whom you appointed to administer the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men pay no heed to you, O king, they do not serve your gods or worship the statue of gold that you have set up. Then Nebuchadnezzar, in raging fury, ordered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego to be brought before the king. Nebuchadnezzar spoke to them and said: Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that you do serve not my god or worship the statue of gold that I have set up? Now if you are ready to fall down and worship the statue that I have made when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, harp, zither, lyre, psaltery, and bagpipe, and all other types of instruments, [well and good]; but if you will not worship, you shall at once be thrown into of a burning fiery furnace; and what god is there that can save you from my power? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, said in reply to the king: O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter, for so if it must be, our God whom we serve is able to save us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will save us from your power, O king. But even if He does not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the statue of gold that you have set up. Nebuchadnezzar was so filled with rage at Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego that his visage was distorted; he gave an order to heat up the furnace seven times its usual heat.” (Daniel 3:8-19).
Rashi says that Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah did not rely on a miracle to save them. Hertz Chumash on Levitucs 22:32: “It contains the solemn warning against the Profanation of the Divine Name 9Chillul hashem), and the positive injunction to every Israelite to hallow the Name of God (Kiddush Hashem) by his life and, if need be, by his death.” Beautiful.
