Letter sent by Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, the most senior rabbi of the haredi, non-hassidic world for publication in Yated Neeman newspaper stopped by second most senior leader Rabbi Gershon Edelstein.

In a highly embarrassing incident for the rabbinic leadership of the ultra-Orthodox (haredi), non-hassidic community, the Yated Neeman newspaper decided not to print a letter by Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky calling for ultra-Orthodox schools to reopen, despite the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, following the intervention of his fellow leader Rabbi Gershon Edelstein.

  1. At what point do you look at this leadership and say "To hell with all of you!"?

  2. If RGE is able to veto a letter, maybe he isn't number 2?

  3. In practical matters, he's no.1. RCK is not really active in public matters anymore.

  4. It was later said that Rav Gershon only wanted to fine tune the letter first. Cannot know what happened unless you are a fly on the wall.

  5. Oh really !
    so where the letter now?

  6. No idea. Maybe it was printed in the end, maybe the change Rav Gershon wanted prevented it from being published. Who has time for this nonsense. I believe that in general the chareidi public has no idea what is going on behind the scenes.

  7. Some schools in Stockholm have decided to close despite being allowed to remain open. Because the people running those schools aren't stupid. The virus spreads asymptomatically, kids will bring it home to household members in addition to infecting adult staff.

  15. Golem!
There are a high number of people dying, especially in the hareidi world. You want a real shmad.

  16. Sweden is basically committing genocide on its elderly population and hoping that not that many of its younger people will be harmed too badly. It's not going well.
The Swedish govt science advisor admits it to BBC news, "What hasn't worked out so well is our death toll." His words. Check out the quick interview

  17. they say that in the end the deaths will be identical so why lock down?

  18. who is "they"? Your retired Swedish adviser, who got his numbers wrong? He said 1 or 2000 would die, and they are already at 2000, and still in the middle.

Identical numbers may or may not die, the strategy is to slow these down - in the meantime, it will protect the hospitals and others at risk. meanwhile, the doctors may learn how better to treat the remaining people, eg new drugs, better use of oxygen, vaccines, trials etc.

It looks like the numbers all over are going towards worst case, rather than best case. slowing it down potentially saves lives.
