The promised post election normalization of Trump? Trump blasts media heads in private meeting

It had all the trappings of a high-level rapprochement: President-elect Donald J. Trump, now the nation’s press critic in chief, inviting the leading anchors and executives of television news to join him on Monday for a private meeting of minds.

On-air stars like Lester Holt, Charlie Rose, George Stephanopoulos and Wolf Blitzer headed to Trump Tower for the off-the-record gathering, typically the kind of event where journalists and politicians clear the air after a hard-fought campaign.

Instead, the president-elect delivered a defiant message: You got it all wrong.

Mr. Trump, whose antagonism toward the news media was unusual even for a modern presidential candidate, described the television networks as dishonest in their reporting and shortsighted in missing the signs of his upset victory. He criticized some in the room by name, including CNN’s president, Jeffrey A. Zucker, according to multiple people briefed on the meeting who were granted anonymity to describe confidential discussions.

It is not unusual for journalists to agree to off-the-record sessions with prominent politicians, including President Obama, as a way to gain insights and develop relationships.

But after details of Mr. Trump’s hectoring leaked on Monday in The New York Post, it seemed the meeting was being used as a political prop, especially after Trump-friendly news outlets trumpeted the session as a take-no-prisoners move by a brave president-elect.

“Trump Slams Media Elite, Face to Face,” blared the Drudge Report. “Trump Eats Press,” wrote Breitbart News.[...]

Mr. Trump is meeting with representatives of several news organizations this week, including The New York Times, where he is scheduled to speak on Tuesday with editors, reporters, columnists and the newspaper’s publisher.

Reince Priebus, Mr. Trump’s chief of staff; Ivanka Trump, Mr. Trump’s daughter; and Ms. Conway are expected to accompany the president-elect to The Times, according to a person with direct knowledge of the meeting.

  1. If you read the papers or listen to the news on the radio you will hear that the discussions are totally slanted anti Trump. Thant's not the reporting but the in between the reporting. All you hear about is how everyone is shocked and upset about Trump winning the election. That's a lie. Yes there are those who are upset but as we see from the fact that he won there are plenty who are happy that he won. But that doesn't get reported. Just that the nation is doomed and mourning. Then Trump confronts them candidly. So instead of taking note of the content of his complaint and maybe considering it little like a person with integrity does when rebuked, they just use it another opportunity to report badly about him.

  2. Harry you just don't get it. This is not a baseball game where one side wins the championship and the other side loses. The issue is much more complex and the Trump supporters are totally oblivious and just repeating "we won - you lost and you are poor losers".

Nope that is not the issue. It is more like a woman marrying a man that she wasn't too happy with and she was warned of personality disorder, possible bipolar and borderline personality and a wandering eye. She goes to her friends say - Well he was the one you married - you are stuck with him so just get along with life.

  3. Thank you for your well though through insight.

May I make a suggestion. When you discuss real facts and real issues that aren't just based on opinions and objectivity, such as the post 'MK Glick: My relative committed suicide due to his divorce' which you posted today, or like the RSK story, or like many others, it has far more credance and value. So may I suggest that you stick to such things.

  4. It is like saying that the only real science worth dealing with is physics and the only phenomenon worth investigating are that are publicly verifiable and objectively measurable. Sorry! That is not what life is about

  5. It's amusing to see the NYT give such credence to the NY Post!
Kellyanne Conway has a very different report of the meeting. The leaker is anonymous; I would not take it at face value, notwithstanding the NYT's eagerness to do so.

In any case, it's red meat for hard-core Trumpists -- their hero tells it to the press like it is! Who knows what really went on there?

  6. Excellent article on how ordinary Americans view Trump's relationship with the elites:

Salena Zito did hands-down the best reporting during the campaign on Trump voters and what was motivating them. She traveled the country to talk to ordinary folks. She did the job every newspaper should have been doing were they not stuck in their bubbles.

  7. I didn't say that. It's just that at this point the discussions have become very pseudo and it seems like all of the wize men of Chelm discussing very very importat issues. Your other discussions don't feel that way.

  8. Again I will ask - why are you wasting your time on this blog? Alternatively you simply don't grasp the point of some of my posts

  9. How could I, a simple man, grasp such great wisdom?!

  10. It has nothing to do with wisdom. You simply don't understand what I am doing but you find it the wisdom of Chelm - so why continue reading it?
