One in four Jewish women suffer abuse in the home

Jewish Chronicle

One in four Jewish women are victims of domestic abuse, according to the largest survey of its kind.

The Jewish Women's Aid study, You know a Jewish woman suffering from domestic abuse: Domestic abuse and the British Jewish community, found that 26 per cent of the 842 people surveyed had personally experienced domestic abuse.

Despite a third admitting they thought abuse in the Jewish community would not be the same as the rest of society, the number of Jewish woman abused is two per cent higher than the national average.

Jewish leaders have criticised communal organisations for "sweeping this problem under the carpet" and said the report must act as a "wake-up call" to the community. [...]

  1. These stats are baloney.

(As an aside, the Jewish Chronicle is an unreliable source.)

  2. Not to minimize the importance of this subject and the unacceptability of domestic abuse, I have a few questions:
    1) What is the rate of men suffering domestic abuse? Does anyone know? Has anyone ever even asked?
    2) In this study, what is the definition of abuse? When I was in undergrad my university released a study claiming that 25% of women on campus had been sexually abused. However, if you actually read the study you'd have seen that anything that could possibly have been called sexual abuse was. Verbal insults or speaking in a disparaging manner were lumped under the same statistic as violent rape. Exactly what is the definition of domestic abuse in this study? Is is actual physical violence? If it's verbal, how is that defined? If it includes such things as "And then he told me he davka wasn't going to wear the socks I bought him because he didn't like the colour" what's the actual percentage of real abuse?

  3. one in four -- ridiculous!

or manuipulation of statistics / polling methodology.

the outrageous thing is -- this will now be quoted as a valid statistic worldwide.

add too: one in two men abused by women. (just as ridiculous.)

  5. 1 in 4? How can anyone possibly believe that? About any group, culture, nationality, etc. It's just not believable. If it's true I would question where did humans' tzelem elokim go since Adam?!
