129 REPUBLICANS REBUKE TRUMP AS HOUSE VOTES TO CONDEMN PRESIDENT'S SYRIA TROOP WITHDRAWAL

Trump claimed that as U.S. soldiers are extracted from Syria amid Turkey's military offensive, "our soldiers are not in harm's way."

"The Kurds are much safer now. They know how to fight," he said. "Like I said, they're not angels... but they fought with us."

The president continued: "They have a problem with Turkey. They have a problem at a border. It's not our border... They've got a lot of sand over there. There's a lot of sand that they can play with."

However, a senior Department of Defense official told Newsweek that Trump's assertion that U.S. soldiers were not in harm's way was not true.

Confronted with a request to apply the colloquially dubbed “Second Get Law” (DRL 236B6(o)) in a matrimonial matter, Judge Bartlett, an Orange County, New York judge, reviewed the statute and declared that she found it unconstitutional as applied to the case at hand, and possibly unconstitutional on its face. Judge Bartlett is the first judge to do so since the law was passed in 1992.

Trump Levels Sanctions on Turkey in Attempt to Contain the Chaos Wreaked By His Syria Withdrawal

https://time.com/5699970/trump-sanctions-turkey-syria/

President Donald Trump announced Monday his intention to level economic sanctions, hike tariffs and halt trade negotiations with Turkey as a result of its military incursion against U.S.-aligned Kurdish forces in northern Syria.
“I will soon be issuing an Executive Order authorizing the imposition of sanctions against current and former officials of the Government of Turkey and any persons contributing to Turkey’s destabilizing actions in northeast Syria. Likewise, the steel tariffs will be increased back up to 50 percent, the level prior to reduction in May,” Trump said in a statement. “The United States will also immediately stop negotiations, being led by the Department of Commerce, with respect to a $100 billion trade deal with Turkey.”

GOP REP. LIZ CHENEY TELLS FOX NEWS TURKEY INVADED SYRIA BECAUSE DEMOCRATS LAUNCHED IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY AGAINST TRUMP

https://www.newsweek.com/gop-liz-cheney-fox-news-turkey-invaded-syria-because-democrats-impeachment-inquiry-trump-1465003

Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney claimed in an interview with Fox News on Monday morning that Democrats are to blame for Turkey's invasion of Syria because they launched an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, despite the fact that the president withdrew U.S. forces from the Middle Eastern nation to give the Turkish forces the greenlight to enter.

"I also want to say that the impeachment proceedings that are going on and what the Democrats are doing themselves to try to weaken this president is part of this," Cheney, who represents Wyoming and is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, argued.

"It was not an accident that the Turks chose this moment to roll across the border," she claimed. "And I think the Democrats have got to pay very careful attention to the damage that they're doing with the impeachment proceedings."

TRUMP AND ERDOGAN 'JUST GOT PLAYED' BY PUTIN SAYS TERRORISM EXPERT, AS KURDS IN SYRIA STRIKE DEAL WITH RUSSIA AND BASHAR AL-ASSAD

https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-erdogan-just-got-played-vladimir-putin-says-terrorism-expert-michael-smith-1465008

A foreign policy and terrorism expert believes President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "just got played" by Russian President Vladimir Putin, after Turkey was permitted to launch its current attack into northeastern Syria.

The offensive, labeled Operation Spring Peace by the Turks, was launched on Wednesday after a phone call between Trump and Erdogan the previous Sunday. Trump announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria's border with Turkey soon after the phone call.

Following the withdrawal, Trump was accused of betraying the region's Kurdish population and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—a force that was instrumental in quashing the influence of militants from the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) in the region.

Pelosi Didn’t Raid Social Security for Impeachment Inquiry

https://www.factcheck.org/2019/10/pelosi-didnt-raid-social-security-for-impeachment-inquiry/

Quick Take
A viral, made-up story sowed confusion among social media users over whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has diverted Social Security money to the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. She didn’t.

Full Story
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has not taken money away from Social Security in order to fund the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

That hoax is the product of America’s Last Line of Defense, a self-described “satirical” publication whose viral headlines across a network of websites often deceive social media users. Its story was published Oct. 4 on one its websites, potatriotsunite.com, with the headline, “Pelosi Diverts $2.4 Billion From Social Security To Cover Impeachment Costs.”

Observant users who clicked through to the full story might have noticed the many tags littered throughout the page indicating its fictitious nature: A banner at the top of the website, for example, reads, “Potatriots unite for satire, ridicule and mockery.”

Russian President Vladimir "Putin likely can't believe his luck" at US President Donald Trump's withdrawal of US troops from the Kurdish region on the border of Syria and Turkey, a Western military official from the anti-ISIS coalition told Insider.

Donald Trump ad misleads about Joe Biden, Ukraine and the prosecutor

https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2019/oct/11/donald-trump/trump-ad-misleads-about-biden-ukraine-and-prosecut/

A campaign ad from President Donald Trump claims it has "facts" about the Bidens and Ukraine, but instead mashes ideas together to create a highly misleading 30-second tale.

"Fact: Joe Biden pressured Ukraine to fire its prosecutor," the narrator says, and then cuts to a clip of a Biden statement: "if the prosecutor is not fired you’re not getting the money. Well son of a bitch, he got fired."

The ad then continues:

"Fact: the prosecutor said he was forced out for leading a corruption probe into Hunter Biden's company. Fact: Democrats want to impeach President Trump for discussing this investigation with Ukraine's President. Fact: Donald Trump won but Democrats want to overturn the election."

The ad distorts the known facts about Ukraine prosecutor general Viktor Shokin and Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings, where Biden’s son Hunter Biden served on the board.

The Trump campaign announced the TV ad on Oct. 9. It has also been visible on social media.

Key takeaways:

• Biden did want Shokin fired, but western leaders had widely criticized the prosecutor general as corrupt and ineffective. Biden was leading a widespread consensus in asking for removal.

• A former Ukrainian official said the investigation into Burisma was dormant under Shokin.

• Democrats launched an impeachment inquiry for Trump’s statements suggesting he wanted Ukraine to investigate a political rival in exchange for political favors.

"Joe Biden pressured Ukraine to fire its prosecutor."

Biden did call for Ukraine to fire Shokin, but the ad fails to note that there were widespread calls for his ouster.

Biden assumed a lead role in U.S. diplomacy toward Ukraine after a popular revolution in early 2014 that led to pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych fleeing the country. Shokin became top prosecutor in 2015, after Yanukovych went into exile. A frustrated Biden in Dec. 2015 threatened to withhold $1 billion unless Shokin was fired, in hopes that a new prosecutor would do more to enforce the law. According to Biden, it worked.

The Trump campaign ad includes a clip of Biden’s partial reports at a Jan. 23, 2018, event sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations. Biden spoke about getting a commitment from then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and from then-Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

"I looked at them and said, ‘I’m leaving in six hours," Biden recounted. "If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.’ Well, son of a b----. He got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time."

"Fact: the prosecutor said he was forced out for leading a corruption probe into Hunter Biden's company."

There is evidence that many Western leaders and institutions, as well as Ukrainian anti-corruption activists, viewed Shokin as corrupt and ineffective for failing to prosecute anybody of significance, and for protecting members of Yanukovych’s and Poroshenko’s circles.

When Shokin was fired in the spring of 2016, press reports explicitly linked his ouster to corruption.

Did Sons of Top Democrats Do Business in Ukraine As Part of Clinton-Linked Conspiracy?

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/sons-top-democrats-ukraine-clinton/

Rating

Mostly False
About this rating

What's True

Hunter Biden sat on the board of Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma from 2014 to 2019. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2015 that Ukrainians had donated more than citizens of any other country to the Clinton Foundation between 1999 and 2014.

What's False

However, we found no evidence that either Hunter or Joe Biden engaged in any wrongdoing in relation to Burisma or Ukraine, or that any of Mitt Romney's sons worked for energy companies linked to Ukraine. John Kerry's stepson never conducted any business in Ukraine, and the association between Ukraine and a Paul Pelosi Jr.-linked energy company is bogus. We also found no evidence exists of any connection between donations to the Clinton Foundation and any of the aforementioned activities.

Trump has been clobbered by the courts -- and there may be more ahead

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/10/12/politics/trump-courts-immigration-tax-returns/index.html

The third branch of government last week began to exact a revenge on the President. And there's likely to be more bad news for Donald Trump from the federal courts system as the US House's impeachment inquiry progresses.
Seven separate federal courts dealt major blows to Trump, on everything from his immigration policy to attempts to get his tax returns. The biggest bludgeon came from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, that esteemed bench that regularly handles separation of powers questions. The Circuit sided 2-1 with the House over its subpoena for eight years of Trump's accounting records.

Why Shep Smith finally walked out of Fox News for good

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/10/11/media/fox-news-shepard-smith/index.html

Last month Shep Smith decided that he had simply had enough.
With President Trump actively distorting the truth and many of his own colleagues helping him do it, the Fox News star prided himself on anchoring a newscast that countered the network's pro-Trump opinion shows.
The way Smith saw it, he was making sure that accurate information was getting on Fox's air.
    "I wonder," he told a Time magazine reporter last year, "if I stopped delivering the facts, what would go in its place in this place that is most watched, most listened, most viewed, most trusted? I don't know."
    But he reached a breaking point. Sometime in September, according to a well-placed source, he went to Fox News management and asked to be let out of his long-term contract. Tensions with the opinion shows were getting to be too much.

    TRUMP CALLS TURKEY BIG TRADING PARTNER A DAY AFTER THREATENING TO 'OBLITERATE' ITS ECONOMY

    https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-turkey-flip-flop-obliterate-f-35-fighter-jets-economy-us-trading-partner-kurds-erdogan-1463862
    Just hours after President Donald Trump threatened to "obliterate" Turkey's economy, he described the country as one of America's biggest and most honest trading partners.

    The president's inconsistency was evident between Monday and Tuesday as he reminded his critics that Turkey is a "big trading partner" with the U.S. The president's contradictory words lent credence to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham's claim Monday that Trump's announcement about pulling out U.S. forces from northern Syria, where they are stationed alongside Kurdish forces, was an "impulsive decision."

    Dramatically softening his tone, Trump on Tuesday touted Turkey's participation in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program, although in July the administration kicked the Turks out of the aircraft program for purchasing Russian S-400 missile defense systems.

    Trump's decision to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria has been widely labeled a "disaster" by even his staunchest GOP defenders and has also been characterized as "abandoning" the Kurds, who helped take down the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) in Syria. Turkish opposition figure Meral Akensar, head of the Iyi Party, called Trump's move a "diplomatic catastrophe," Reuters reported.

    "So many people conveniently forget that Turkey is a big trading partner of the United States, in fact they make the structural steel frame for our F-35 Fighter Jet," Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. "They have also been good to deal with, helping me to save many lives at Idlib Province, and returning, in very good health, at my request, Pastor Brunson, who had many years of a long prison term remaining. Also remember, and importantly, that Turkey is an important member in good standing of NATO. He is coming to the U.S. as my guest on November 13th. #ENDENDLESSWARS."

    In September 2018, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said it was not his decision to release the pastor, who had been living in Turkey for over two decades. Andrew Brunson was accused of being involved in a coup against Erdogan, as well as in the opposition movement led by Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who lives in exile in the U.S. Before being released soon after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's insistence, Brunson was facing life in prison if convicted of the terrorism charges against him.

    Giuliani's intrigue comes back to haunt Trump

    Rudy Giuliani is supposed to be extricating Donald Trump from his career-threatening mess over Ukraine, but now his own foreign freelancing seems to have seriously undercut the President's core impeachment defense.
    Corruption indictments filed Thursday against two Giuliani fixers who investigated Joe Biden do not just introduce the first criminal jeopardy into the cast of characters in the wider Ukraine intrigue. They also present a new moment of political peril for Trump, and raise new questions about the ethics and credibility of the company that he keeps.

    Trump’s False Tweets on Syria

    https://www.factcheck.org/2019/10/trumps-false-tweets-on-syria/

    After announcing a withdrawal of U.S. troops in Syria at the border with Turkey, President Donald Trump tweeted incorrect statements about the conflict.
    On Oct. 7, Trump claimed the United States’ involvement in Syria was originally supposed to last “30 days,” but experts told us they had never heard of such a plan. When the Obama White House first announced the deployment of special operations troops in 2015, Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters, “I don’t have a specific date to give you when they will come out.”

    Trump says he 'doesn't know' Giuliani's Ukrainian associates. Here's what we do know

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/10/10/politics/donald-trump-lev-parnas-igor-fruman-ukraine/index.html

    For Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, becoming powerful Republican donors didn't take very long.
    With almost no record of political giving before February 2018, the two men found themselves posing for photographs with President Donald Trump and meeting for breakfast with the President's son within a few months of their first donations to GOP campaigns.
    Federal prosecutors said Thursday those donations were actually funded by foreign nationals -- and that Parnas and Fruman illegally funneled the funds through a company meant to conceal its origins.

    Trump Boasted That His Border Wall Was 'Virtually Impenetrable.' Then an 8-Year-Old Girl Climbed a Replica

    https://time.com/5694432/girl-climbs-border-wall-replica/

    When President Donald Trump announced that his signature wall at the U.S.’s southern border would be “virtually impenetrable” while visiting San Diego last month, Rick Weber, who co-founded the Muir Valley rock climbing park in Rogers, Kentucky, was listening.
    “You don’t tell a bona fide rock climber something’s impossible to climb,” Weber tells TIME.
    Weber took the President’s claim as a challenge. He says he constructed his own replica of the wall, relying on the wall’s official dimensions as well as recent images of the structure. This weekend, Weber is planning to invite climbers attending the “Rocktoberfest” rock climbing festival at the nearby Red River Gorge canyon system in Kentucky to climb the model. Guests will be challenged to compete to climb up and over the wall in the fastest time.

    Several people have already managed to climb up the wall replica, including 8-year-old Lucy Hancock. Hancock didn’t use any ropes or other tools to climb the wall, but wore a belay, a safety device designed to catch a falling climber. An adult climber, Erik Kloeker, was up and over the wall in about 40 seconds.

    Republican anger grows as Trump disavows Kurds by saying they didn't help during WWII

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/10/09/politics/turkey-syria-us-anger-ramifications/index.html

    Republicans savaged President Donald Trump Wednesday for allowing Turkey to attack US allies in Syria as the President offered varying reasons for giving Turkey the green light, including the fact that Kurds did not fight alongside the US in World War II.
    Turkey launched its military operation to flush Kurds allied with the US out of northeastern Syria sparking outrage in Congress, creating rare bipartisan unity about the risks to the Kurds, US national security interests, regional stability and the fight against ISIS.
    Trump apparently gave Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the go-ahead on Sunday to proceed with his long-planned move against Kurdish fighters who make up part of the Syrian Defense Forces and who lost thousands of men fighting with the US against ISIS.

    A new high of 51 percent wants Trump impeached and removed from office, another 4 percent want him impeached but not removed, and 40 percent oppose impeachment altogether. In July, 42 percent favored impeachment and removal, while 5 percent said impeach but don’t remove him, and 45 percent opposed impeachment.

    AFTER TRUMP ABANDONS KURDS, ISRAEL KNOWS IT CAN’T RELY ON ANYONE

    https://www.jpost.com/International/Trumps-abandonment-of-Kurds-will-reinforce-Israels-sense-it-604006

    Don’t let the lack of any formal Israeli response to US President Donald Trump’s dramatic reversal of policy and decision to remove US troops from northern Syria fool you: Jerusalem is deeply, deeply concerned about this step.

    Not because it will suddenly impact Israel’s ability to take action in Syria when it desires to halt Iranian attempts to entrench itself there – though it could make that marginally more difficult – but because it drives home the idea that Israel really can only rely on itself.

    Trump’s decision – a reversal of last year’s reversal of an announcement to withdraw US troops from Syria – cannot be seen as an isolated decision. It must also be seen within the context of the Iranian-backed attacks last month on the Saudi oil facilities, and the deafening lack of an American response.

    Both these incidents show that the present administration is little different from the previous Obama administration in its unwillingness to stand up and confront where necessary the negative forces in the Middle East – and this is something that has enormous significance for Israel.

    What this is driving home to the country’s strategic planners is that while the US under a very friendly administration will support Israel at the United Nations; while it will offer assistance with aid for weapons; and while it will give it moral backing and defend it against international pressure – when it comes to the use of force, Israel must be willing and ready to defend itself, by itself.
    Ironically, Trump’s abandonment of the Kurds comes just a month after he mentioned the possibility of signing some kind of a mutual defense pact with Israel.

    Trump’s GOP allies condemn president after ‘sickening’ Turkish incursion

    Turkey’s incursion into Syria on Wednesday is prompting fresh bipartisan condemnation of President Donald Trump’s moves and more congressional threats to hamstring Turkey economically, with some Republicans calling the situation "sickening" and a "terrible mistake" by the president.

    Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), otherwise reliable allies of Trump, both lambasted the president on Wednesday after Turkey moved into northeastern Syria, which is occupied by Kurdish allies of the United States. The U.S. worked closely with Kurds to defeat the Islamic State, and now lawmakers in both parties fear Trump’s conversation on Sunday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that led to a U.S. pullout has become a “disaster in the making,” as Graham put it.

    Story Continued Below
    “Pray for our Kurdish allies who have been shamelessly abandoned by the Trump Administration. This move ensures the reemergence of ISIS,” said Graham, vowing to lead congressional efforts “to make Erdogan pay a heavy price. I urge President Trump to change course while there is still time.”

    Turkey launches military assault in Syria as Kurdish fighters say warplanes are bombing region

    https://www.foxnews.com/world/turkey-syria-kurdish-troops-military-assault

    A planned Turkish military operation in northern Syria has now begun, the country's president announced Wednesday, as Kurdish fighters say warplanes are already bombing civilian areas in the region.
    President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tweeted that the maneuvers being carried out against Syrian Kurdish forces –which Ankara considers terrorists allied with a Kurdish insurgency within Turkey – are part of Operation Peace Spring.
    "Our mission is to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area," he said in a tweet. "#OperationPeaceSpring will neutralize terror threats against Turkey and lead to the establishment of a safe zone, facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homes."
    A spokesperson for the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces says Turkish warplanes have "started to carry out airstrikes on civilian areas," causing a "huge panic among people of the region."

    Donald Trump's Chaotic Presidency Has One Fixed Principle: Retaliation

    https://reason.com/2019/10/07/donald-trumps-chaotic-presidency-has-one-fixed-principle-retaliation/

    In recent days, President Donald Trump has threatened the Ukraine whistleblower with the treatment meted out in "old times" to "spies," which means execution. He has suggested that Rep. Adam Schiff (D–Calif.)—chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, which is investigating the scandal—should be arrested and charged with treason for unfairly characterizing Trump's comments soliciting dirt about former Vice President Joe Biden from the Ukrainian president. And he has warned that if Democrats try to remove him from office through impeachment, they will trigger another "civil war" in the country.

    Uncomfortable Questions for Comfortable (IDF) Draft Officers:

    We reported earlier on the plight of Ziva bas Mazel, for example, here:

    https://daattorah.blogspot.com/2019/09/orthodox-jewish-girl-languishing-in.html

    Now, some uncomfortable questions:

    1. Why did Ziva bas Mazal,* a black religious girl, from an Orthodox Jewish Ethiopian family, get pummeled with a whopping 31 day sentence in Israeli military prison - for refusing to violate her faith and personal modesty by enlisting in the Israeli military?

    {* Last names are usually omitted, at the preferences of the girl's family, except when print publication requires it, and circumstances allow it.}

    2. Why did Ziva get hit with an additional order to comply with the IDF's antireligious draft order - on pain of an additional SIXTY days in military prison?

    3. In this disregard for Ziva's religious and legal rights, what was the role of Avner Lotati, the Segan Mefakaid (usually translated "Deputy Commander;" in this case perhaps more accurately: "Vice Commander") who interviewed Ziva in the process leading to her aforementioned sentencing?

    4. What precisely is the Ageless Wisdom behind Avner Lotati's fatwa that a determination about Ziva's religiosity should be made THREE MONTHS after forcing her into the military? Firstly, she is religious, and they know she is religious. Even the Draft Office "frummies" couldn't find an iota of evidence otherwise. Secondly, even if we employ "Willing Suspension of Disbelief," and pretend to entertain the notion that there is indeed some "question" about her [incontrovertible] religiosity - that "question" must be adjudicated prior to drafting - not afterward.

    5. Why was there an attempt (thank G-d, unsuccessful) to keep Ziva imprisoned over the Yom Kippur fast-day - the holiest day of the year - by pressuring her not to seek a holiday-release? Was the intent to use her holiday stay in prison to "prove" that "she's not really so religious" - in order to retroactively justify the "Emperor-has-no-Clothes" Lotati Narrative?

    A similar modus operandi was employed against other religious girls. One was in the famous saga of Yuval bas Tamar, an unquestionably religious girl who heroically endured excruciating abuse in avoiding the military draft in 2018. First, officials endangered her physical health to the extent that she was obligated to travel on Shabbos; then the draft officers used that (Halachically-required) travel to argue that she wasn't fully religious.

    6. May there be - just perhaps - a taint of antireligious racism operative here, working against Ziva? On Feb.10, 2012, Tami Maor reported that the head of IDF Manpower, Ornah Barbibai, in an official visit to the ancient city of Tzefas [accompanied by draft officials of the T'veriah (Tiberias) Draft Office] articulated an IDF goal: to target Ethiopian Jewish immigrants in absorption centers -- and to restrict girls' religious exemptions from military service (see "Historia Chozeres," p. 200 for a copy of the orginal report). Also see Aluma.org.il regarding their focus on increasing military enlistment in the Ethiopian community, along with their promotion of drafting religious girls (in general).

    Why are Ethiopian immigrants fodder for elitist Israeli social engineering?

    Israeli society is predominantly traditional, if not fully observant. However, the government and social elite have always been dominated, to one extent or another by secularist (often - but not exclusively - leftist) elites.

    Historically, darker skinned Jews have suffered immensely under the antireligious, secularist Israeli Establishment. Much information has come out in recent years about the kidnapping of Yemenite babies perpetrated by (predominantly secularist) governmental officials decades ago. Jews of Sephardic countries experienced discrimination as well. In wake of the arrival of Ethiopians, they too encounter cultural bullying from the elitist, antireligious Israeli Establishment.

    The Torah emphatically and repeatedly exhorts us against oppression of the powerless: the poor, converts, widows, and orphans. In fact, those who cannot fight back actually benefit from an elevated level of Divine Protection (e.g. see Parshas Mishpatim (Exodus) 22:20-26, and Rash"i).

    ~~~
    A Little Background:
    Ziva's encounter with the Israeli military actually started almost a year ago. In the wake of her recent arrest (reported in The Jewish Press two weeks ago), it climaxed with a recent interview with Avner Lotati, Deputy Commander of "Maitav." (Maitav is the military draft division, charged with drafting teenage girls, thereby providing a continuous influx of young females into the secularist-run, male-dominated Israeli military - all in flagrant violation of Jewish Law, according to leading Rabbis from across the spectrum.)
    As indicated above, the Lotati interview resulted in a denial of Ziva's right to a religious exemption, a sentence of 31 days in military prison, and sixty additional days for any future refusal to succumb to the military draft. Moreover, this isn't the first time Lotati has committed such a travesty. He similarly denied other demonstrably religious girls their religious exemptions as well, e.g. Penina bas Sima, a girl from a national-religious background, several months ago. Even according to Israeli law, religious girls are supposed to be exempted from military service (the Torah prohibits drafting any girl or woman, of any religion, or degree of religiosity, ethnic background). However, in 2013, the Israeli government issued a policy shift, explicitly seeking to boost enlistment of religious girls.
    Increasingly, the antireligious elite has been trying to limit religious exemptions for girls, especially disadvantaged girls, or those on the societal periphery. All sorts of outrageous abuses have been occurring over that past year or two, under the"right wing" government of Binyomin Netanyahu.
    It's apparent that Ziva is being disadvantaged by both elitist, secularist racism and antireligious sentiment. While mistreatment for any reason, including race or ethnic background, is against the Torah, what's more revolting here is that it's being perpetrated by a government claiming to function as a Jewish State.
    Ziva has been assisted by religious Jews internationally and domestically. For example, Orthodox Jewish activists held volleys of vocal support rallies outside her military prison nightly, and throughout the night. They made sure to convey to everyone on site that Ziva's oppressive treatment will not be tolerated by Orthodox Jewry.
    However, given the persecution she's enduring, and the spectre of another two months of military incarceration R"L - far more needs to be done, not only for Ziva, but for all of those girls who share her fortitude to stand up to the exploitive IDF -- and for all those girls who - unfortunately - do not.
    We must never lose sight of the strategy at work here. For every girl the military arrests, imprisons, and/or persecutes, there are dozens or perhaps hundreds who succumb to pressure and terror. We share a responsibility for all of them, from the very strong to the timid and weak. (See Yechezkel 34, for example.) We will have to answer what we did when their cries rose to the Heavens. And there are few merits which compete with the merit of saving innocent girls from the moral, spiritual, psychological, and physical dangers of military service, especially in such an immoral, exploitive environment.
    The saintly Chofetz Chaim (who, incidentally, has what to say about some of the types of perpetrators with whom these girls contend (cf. Kovetz He'Oros, Aggada, 10:1-6)) explains the advice given in the Talmud on how to avoid the Birthpangs of the Messiah, "Chevlei Moshiach," namely: "Ya'asok baTorah u'Gemilus Chassodim," to become "involved" in Torah and kindness. "Ya'asok," he explains, is a term alluding to business, indicating that we should maximize our investment of effort in these endeavors by treating them as seriously as we'd treat a business. This cause certainly is one providing some of the most potent merits we could hope for. It includes both pidyon shevuyim and hatzolas nefashos - physically and spiritually.
    Have an uplifting Yom Kippur and Chag HaSukkos,
    BF
    Graham: Syria withdrawal will be a 'nightmare' for Israel
    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/269909
    Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Monday expressed opposition to US President Donald Trump’s sudden decision to pull back US troops from northern Syria, warning such a move would be a “nightmare for Israel”.
    “I don’t believe it is a good idea to outsource the fight against ISIS to Russia, Iran, and Turkey. They don’t have America’s best interests at heart,” tweeted Graham.
    “The most probable outcome of this impulsive decision is to ensure Iran’s domination of Syria. The US now has no leverage and Syria will eventually become a nightmare for Israel,” he added.
    “I feel very bad for the Americans and allies who have sacrificed to destroy the ISIS Caliphate because this decision virtually reassures the reemergence of ISIS. So sad. So dangerous. President Trump may be tired of fighting radical Islam. They are NOT tired of fighting us,” continued Graham.
    “Finally,” wrote Graham, “this decision makes it difficult for the U.S. to recruit allies against radical Islam. By abandoning the Kurds we have sent the most dangerous signal possible – America is an unreliable ally and it’s just a matter of time before China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea act out in dangerous ways.”
