Dealing with People who are bad Influences

Devarim (28:9-10)You stand this day, all of you, before your God יהוה —your tribal heads, your elders, and your officials, every householder in Israel, your children, your wives, even the stranger within your camp, from woodchopper to waterdrawer

Rashi (Devarim 29:10) FROM THE WOODCUTTER [UNTO THE DRAWER OF THE WATER] — This teaches that some of the Canaanites came in Moses' days to become proselytes just as the Gibeonites came in the days of Joshua, — and this is the meaning of what is stated of the Gibeonites, (Joshua 9:4) “And they also acted cunningly”; — and Moses made them woodcutters and drawers of water (cf. Midrash Tanchuma, Nitzavim 2).

Rashi says the woodchoppers and waterdrawers are the lowest in society. He says they are Cananites who decided to convert rather than be killed. Since they were an undesirable influence they were given the most menial tasks so that they should be avoided and not influence others. I saw in the Sefer Mishna Torah that they in fact were assigned to work in the Temple. He asks but this would seem as a reward for their trickery? He answers there are two ways of dealing with bad people 1) ostracize or isolate them 2) Expose them to good influences so they become good also. The Temple was the place of optimal good and thus they might become better.

Trump demands Bondi prosecute political foes in Truth Social posts

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/09/20/replacement-named-va-prosecutor-ousted-over-probes-trump-foes

President Donald Trump demanded that Attorney General Pam Bondi move swiftly to prosecute several political opponents in a series of extraordinary social media posts Saturday, a breakdown of traditional fire walls that have existed between the White House and Justice Department on prosecutorial discretion.

He urged the prosecutions of New York Attorney General Letitia James (D), former FBI director James B. Comey and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-California), claiming all three were “guilty as hell” and that his supporters were noting “nothing has been done.” Comey and James were both investigated but ultimately not charged by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Virginia this year. Both have denied any wrongdoing.

Trump’s messages were one of his most overt attempts to date to override the traditional restraints on the president’s involvement in law enforcement investigations after months of calling for criminal charges against those he perceives as political enemies. It comes a day after he called for the ouster of the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik S. Siebert, who resigned amid pressure over his decision not to seek indictments against Comey and James.

A vengeful Trump props up the unproductive as his economy falls apart

https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/5512232-a-vengeful-trump-props-up-the-unproductive-as-his-economy-falls-apart

Inflation rose to 2.9 percent in September from 2.7 percent last month, and the economy produced a dismal 22,000 in the latest jobs report. Meanwhile, the imminent threat of a recession indicates a tarnishing rather than the “golden age of prosperity” President Trump promised at his inauguration.

Under normal slowdowns that any economy undergoes, such numbers would be of cyclical concern, but in in the current climate they may be precursors to large economic disasters lurking underneath the numbers.

Prices, jobs, and economic health are not just self-propelling numbers, but rest upon ever-deepening layers of an economy and their connection to a host of institutions which provide signals to investors to take risks, for consumers to buy, and for governments to spend or not spend.

The deeper malaise lies in the “wrecking ball” metaphor now regularly employed to describe Trump’s approach to economic institutions. This has played out at three levels: the direct government interventions in market behavior; the willingness to disregard the most productive sectors of the economy in favor of the least; and the disastrous approach to scientific research and innovation that the administration hails as a war on liberal elites.

Donald Trump Says Late Night Shows Aren't Allowed to Mock Him

 https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-says-late-night-shows-arent-allowed-mock-him-jimmy-kimmel-2132463

President Donald Trump has said TV networks that air overly-critical commentary of him aren't allowed to do so and should have their licenses taken away.

"All they do is hit Trump," he told reporters on Air Force One Thursday on the return trip from a state visit to the U.K. "They're licensed. They're not allowed to do that."

Earlier during the plane-based press conference the president said "maybe their license should be taken away," in reference to those networks that aren't positive about him.

Trump’s media enforcer is relishing his Jimmy Kimmel moment

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/09/19/trumps-media-enforcer-is-relishing-his-jimmy-kimmel-moment

“We can do this the hard way or the easy way,” he said, counseling Disney — and by implication its competitors across the media sector — to “find ways to change conduct” or else.

The threat he implicitly leveled at the Hollywood giant that owns ABC is one he has wielded before: that the FCC would pull local broadcast licenses — an extraordinary step with almost no precedent, and which First Amendment experts said is probably illegal.

Whether the threat was bluster or not, it worked: In response to pressure from Carr and affiliate station owners Nexstar and Sinclair, ABC preempted Kimmel’s show “indefinitely” on Wednesday night. It is unclear if and when Kimmel will return to the airwaves, and the network provided no further comment. Carr did not respond to requests for comment for this article.

Before Trump’s election victory, Carr often advocated against government intervention in speech.

His wife was dying, his federal job crumbling. It tested his faith — in God and Trump

One federal worker was rejected three times from the administration’s early resignation offer. Would he blame the president he voted for?

“I’m disappointed in this administration, specifically Pres. Trump’s failure as a leader,” he wrote. Trump, Brandon scrawled, was “abandoning his commitment to ensuring that the common person is protected.”

Judge tosses Trump’s $15B lawsuit against New York Times

 https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/19/donald-trump-new-york-times-lawsuit-order-00573073

A federal judge threw out President Donald Trump’s $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, calling it an undignified public relations exercise meant to “rage against an adversary” rather than present a well-reasoned legal case.

“As every lawyer knows (or is presumed to know), a complaint is not a public forum for vituperation and invective,” U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday, an appointee of George H.W. Bush, said of Trump’s 85-page grievance-laden lawsuit. “A complaint is not a megaphone for public relations or a podium for a passionate oration at a political rally or the functional equivalent of the Hyde Park Speakers’ Corner.”

Merryday gave Trump’s attorneys 28 days to refile the lawsuit and ordered it to be limited to 40 pages, saying Trump must follow the rules requiring complaints to be clear and precise. He said the lawsuit, if it proceeds, must do so in “a professional and dignified manner.”

Vaccine panel that limited covid shot scrutinized after chaotic meetings

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/09/20/acip-vaccine-cdc-criticism-rfk/

The chair of a new panel of federal immunization advisers selected by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Friday that the group’s “enormous depth and knowledge about vaccines, about science” should be obvious to anyone listening to them work.

But medical associations and scientific experts who watched the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meetings Thursday and Friday panned the panel’s performance as the group reversed recommendations for coronavirus and a combined measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox vaccine.

They said the members were unprepared, misunderstood or ignored key data and highlighted flawed or inconclusive research often trumpeted by vaccine critics.

Critics argued the new panelists lack the expertise for the job and risk undoing measures that have long curbed preventable diseases.

During two days of meetings at a CDC campus in Georgia, committee members appeared at times uncertain about the issues before them or the powers of the panel, prompting staff to explain steps in evaluating data and setting vaccine recommendations.

Trump: ‘It’s no longer free speech.’

 https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/19/trump-no-longer-free-speech-00574219

President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his claim that critical television coverage of him is “illegal” and pushed back on criticisms that his administration was taking actions that chill free speech.

“When 97 percent of the stories are bad about a person, it’s no longer free speech,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, complaining about an apparent asymmetry between his victory in the 2024 election and his treatment by media organizations. It was not immediately clear what statistics or laws he was referencing.

Free speech storm intensifies as Trump goes after Kimmel

 https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5513095-trump-administration-pressures-abc-kimmel

The Trump administration’s pressure campaign against ABC and Jimmy Kimmel, which saw the Federal Communications Commission chief turn up the heat on broadcasters, is intensifying fears over the policing of speech — which were already rising before this week’s late night television uproar.

“I hate what Jimmy Kimmel said. I am thrilled that he was fired,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Friday on his podcast. “But let me tell you, if the government gets in the business of saying ‘we don’t like what you the media have said, we’re going to ban you from the airwaves, if you don’t say what we like,’ that will end up bad for conservatives.”

“Private employers have every right to dismiss employees, whether they’re television talk show hosts or otherwise, if they violate the standards of that company,” Pence said at an event hosted by The Atlantic. “Now, I would have preferred that the chairman of the FCC had not weighed in.”

“This is not a role for the federal government or the chairman of the FCC to be playing,” said Tom Wheeler, who was FCC chair under former President Obama, during a CNN appearance on Friday. “The danger here is authoritarian control of the media. The FCC for 90 years has promoted diversity of thought and now the Trump, Carr FCC is coming in and saying they’ll be the judge of what those views should be.”

Sen. Mark Warner (R-Va.) shared a clip from Cruz’s podcast in which the Texas Republican said Carr’s threats against ABC were “right out of ‘Goodfellas.’”

“I don’t often agree with Ted Cruz, but when he’s right, he’s right,” Warner said.

CDC advisers vote to restrict MMRV vaccine options for younger children, delay vote on hepatitis B vaccine

 https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/cdc-advisers-dropping-universal-newborn-hepatitis-vaccine/story?id=125713736

The committee was not considering eliminating or recommending against either the MMRV or hepatitis B vaccines completely. But the changes that have been proposed could result in major disruptions and more illness, experts warned.

Experts say these changes could also cause confusion, more doctors' appointments and more individual shots for children, which could potentially lead to missed cases or more infections. It could also complicate vaccine supply and manufacturing logistics.

"The disadvantage of giving two doses, or as was suggested, separating the two doses, is that we know compliance falls, and the advantage of combination vaccines is that children and adults are more likely to complete the vaccine requirements if it's given as a single dose," said ACIP member Dr. Cody Meissner.

Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension raises fears of a new censorship era

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/tv/2025/09/18/jimmy-kimmel-suspension-celebrities-react

Kimmel’s suspension was announced hours after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr criticized the comedian and implied that the FCC could retaliate against those who aired him.

Trump, who has complained about being the target of Kimmel’s jokes since long before Kirk’s death, reacted with glee to the show getting pulled.

Later, at a news conference as he visited England, Trump downplayed concerns about censorship. He said Kimmel was “fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else,” and added: “you can call that free speech or not.”

Later, at a news conference as he visited England, Trump downplayed concerns about censorship. He said Kimmel was “fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else,” and added: “you can call that free speech or not.”

And still later, as he flew home on Air Force One on Thursday, Trump suggested networks that give him bad publicity should “maybe” have their licenses taken away. (The FCC regulates local TV station licenses, not networks.)

Kimmel’s ratings were reportedly falling before his suspension. But the biggest owner of ABC-affiliated stations, Nexstar, did not cite ratings in a statement explaining why it pulled his show. The company instead blasted Kimmel’s “offensive and insensitive” comments about Kirk’s death, and said that “continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time.

Trump on Jimmy Kimmel: Networks that only criticize him ‘not allowed to do that’

 https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5510784-trump-jimmy-kimmel-criticism

President Trump on Thursday suggested networks and late-night shows in particular should not be allowed to be overwhelmingly critical of him in the wake of ABC’s decision to take host Jimmy Kimmel off the air.

“They’re 97 percent against; they give me only bad press. I mean, they’re getting a license,” he continued. “I would think maybe their license should be taken away.”

The FCC, Disney and Jimmy Kimmel

 https://www.wsj.com/opinion/fcc-disney-jimmy-kimmel-brendan-carr-media-regulation-197bdf0a?mod=hp_opin_pos_1

The right gives the left a dose of cancel culture and regulatory abuse.

Maybe now our progressive friends understand why these columns oppose government control of business and fought liberal cancel culture. Regulatory power in the hands of a willful President can too easily become a weapon against political opponents, including the media.

That’s what happened Wednesday as Brendan Carr, President Trump’s man at the Federal Communications Commission, threatened Disney and its affiliates if they didn’t punish late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for comments about Charlie Kirk. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Mr. Carr told a podcaster, in words that could have been uttered by a New Jersey mob boss.

Jawboning and Jimmy Kimmel

 https://www.thefp.com/p/jawboning-and-jimmy-kimmel-free-speech-censorship?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

The host appears to have been so isolated in his Bluesky bubble that he actually believed that Tyler Robinson was a man of the right when all the evidence suggests just the opposite. If ABC on its own had fired the host for clueless material, that would have been entirely within their rights.

But that is not what happened. Instead, Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr went on Benny Johnson’s YouTube show and offered Disney-owned ABC a choice. “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” said the country’s top regulator of broadcast television. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

This is what’s known as jawboning—when state actors use threats to inappropriately compel private action. That’s an awfully nice broadcasting license you have there, Bob Iger. Shame if anything happens to it because of your Jimmy Kimmel problem.

Trump’s anti-media blitz that led to Kimmel’s suspension is straight from a European strongman’s playbook

 https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/18/media/trump-fcc-kimmel-free-speech-viktor-orban-hungary

Weaponize the levers of government for partisan political gain. Pressure privately owned media companies to toe the party line. Punish the owners who resist and reward the ones who acquiesce.

That’s how Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán consolidated control of the media in his country, according to scholars who witnessed Hungary’s democratic backsliding firsthand.

President Trump and his allies appear to be running the same playbook against media outlets in the US.

Using legal maneuvers, financial incentives and public pressure campaigns, Trump is persuading companies to make changes that benefit his party and bolster his own power. Wednesday’s decision by Disney’s ABC to sideline Jimmy Kimmel is the latest example.

Trump is doing exactly what he claims was done against him. Yes, absolutely true.

And if you supported it when it was being done against him, you're a hypocrite for opposing it now.

The only relevant issue is whether you approve Trump's violation of the law not whether he should be permitted to seek revenge against imagined mistreatment. We should cancel future elections because he claims he was unfairly defeated! We should end impeachment because he claims the charges against him were phony. We should cancel all prosecution for fraud and rape because he claims he was wrongly convicted ?! Et cetra et cetra

Yesurim shel ahava

Igros Moshe (YD 1:140): This that you explained that Suffering from Love (Berachos 5a) - that Rashi explains that G d afflicts a person even though he hasn’t done any sin in order to increase his reward - is similar to the issue of a father hitting his son even though he has completed the his required task. The father does it in order to increase the child’s fear and respect for him . Even though the son would fulfill the father’s command anyway he gets additional reward. This is a valid explanation…. However it is necessary to add that G d does not give Suffering from Love to someone who hasn’t sinned at all. … Nevertheless he is chastised in the same way as the son who has completed his task. This is to increase his reward more than his actual merits…. Nevertheless Rashi’s view is that the suffering serves no purpose for the tzadik except to increase his reward.

Ramban (Shaar HaGemul #3): A person who becomes afflicted with suffering should examine himself for sin. If he hadn’t done a sin which justifies the suffering he should assume that it comes from neglecting a positive commandment. But if he is completely righteous and has not sinned nor neglected positive commandments than the suffering is the result of yesurim shel ahava which are to give him extra reward in the World to Come. The suffering of love comes to purify a person from sins done accidentally and from lack of caution to avoid sins. Thus he has tasted of accidentally sinning and furthermore every improper deed dirties his soul. Even though these accidental sins are not punished in Gehinom, but he still needs to be purified from them to reach the proper level for the World to Come. Therefore G d has mercy on people who have accidentally sinned and allows them to atone by bring sacrifices in the Temple. When there is no Temple He sends suffering to purify the soul for the World to Come…. Thus even suffering of love is also to purify a person from sin.

Sefer HaIkkarim (4:13): … … 4) Sometimes the tzadik experiences bad because it is beneficial for him. This is called Suffering of Love. It is also called a nisayon (test). There are three aspects of Suffering of Love. a) Suffering that erases the slightest remnant of sins that are too minor to be atoned for in a prescribed manner or that he is unaware of what he had done. b) Sometimes there is not the slightest sin but the suffering is entirely to test the tzadik whether he serves G d entirely from love…c) Sometimes there is absolutely no sin and there is no need to test the tzadik but it is entirely to increase the reward in the World to Come - such as Avraham’s sacrifice of Yitzchok.

Rambam (Moreh Nevuchim 3:17): The majority of our Sages agree that there is no death or suffering without sin… A person is rewarded according to all the good deeds that he has done even if he wasn’t commanded by the prophet to do them. He is also punished for all the bad things he did, even if he wasn’t forbidden by the prophet. This is true however for those things that his intellect would indicate that they were good or bad.…In the words of our Sages there is something additional which is not found written in the Torah. Some of them talk about yesurim shel ahava which is suffering which occurs even without sin - in order to increase reward. This is also a concept found amongst some Muslims. However there is no verse in the Torah which expresses this idea.

Maharal (Derech Chaim 4:16): It is difficult to understand what our sages meant by saying that “it is not in our hands to understand the suffering of the righteous.” Of course we understand why the righteous suffer because it is known that there is no such thing as a perfect tzadik who has never sinned. Apparently it is referring to the suffering that the righteous get even when it is not the result of sin as is mentioned in Berachos(5a). Even though this is “suffering of love,” nevertheless the sages said that we don’t understand it. In other words there are tzadikim who don’t want this suffering as we find in Berachos(5b) that R’ Yochanon did not want his suffering or the reward for the suffering. From this we see the suffering was difficult for the tzadikim even though they were entirely from G d’s love in order to increase the reward the tzadik would receive in the World to Come. Therefore he said that it is not in our hands to understand either the tranquility of the wicked - because even Moshe did not understand this and we don’t understand the suffering of the righteous… because the tzadikim who rejected “suffering of love”…. The expression “it is not in our hands” - means that we are forced to accept it even if it is not to our good. In other words it is not according to what we want and it is against our will…

Berachos (5a): If a person notices that bad things are happening to him, he should examine his deeds as it says(Eicha 3:40).: Let us search and examine our ways and thereby return to G d. If he examined his deeds yet finds nothing to justify his suffering, he should assume his suffering to neglect of Torah study…. If the assumption is not correct then he should know for a certainty that his suffering is from G d’s love as it says(Mishlei 3:12): Whomever G d loves He chastises.

Rashi (Berachos 5a) Yissurim shel ahava G-d causes suffering in this world even if the person did not sin in order to increase his reward that he will receive in the World to Come which is greater than what he deserves based entirely on merit for good deeds.

Workers Are Getting Fired Over Posts Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Death

Campaigns to alert employers to contentious posts are posing new challenges for bosses; ‘This is very different’ from past political controversies at work

Workers across the country who’ve mocked Charlie Kirk’s death online have quickly learned their words can get them fired.

From American Airlines to Nasdaq—and in workplaces that include restaurants, schools and law firms—employers have ousted or suspended staff in recent days for gloating, deriding or making otherwise contentious posts about the conservative activist’s killing. Many are getting flagged to the posts by online activists who’ve collected the names of commenters. Some prominent conservatives have joined the call, too.

Pam Bondi Needs a Free Speech Tutorial

 https://www.wsj.com/opinion/pam-bondi-free-speech-hate-speech-charlie-kirk-first-amendment-a4f09203?mod=hp_opin_pos_2

The Attorney General seems to think ‘hate speech’ is illegal. Charlie Kirk knew better.

Is a basic understanding of the First Amendment too much to expect from the nation’s Attorney General? Progressives have spent years trying to create and define a category called “hate speech.” This misunderstanding of the First Amendment seems to have infiltrated the D.C. water supply because AG Pam Bondi repeated it Monday in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Discussing Kirk’s work on college campuses, Ms. Bondi mentioned the “disgusting” antisemitism on display at many universities, and so far so good. But wait. “There’s free speech and then there’s hate speech, and there is no place—especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie, in our society,” the country’s top law enforcer told a podcast. “We will absolutely target you, go after you, if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.”

My brother Dovid and his Relationship With Gedolim

A statement I heard from Rav Diskind, the son in law of Rav Yakov, summarizes my brother very well. He said: ”Our Sages have said that Yiftach in his generation is as Shmuel was in his generation. But woe is it to the person who knew Shmuel.” He obviously wasn’t saying that Yiftach in his time as the head of the Sanhedrin was not to be disrespected since he clearly was not as great as Shmuel. Nor was he saying Yiftach was not as authoritative as Shmuel because he was not as great a Talmid chachom as we see that he sacrificed his daughter. He was saying a more personal point. While we need to respect the contemporary leaders there is no mitzva to be stupid and ignore their short comings. Rav Moshe writes in the Igros Moshe that there are no gedolim today, including himself,  that you can’t disagree with what they say.  My brother Dovid had the opportunity to get to know the views of the previous generation personally and therefore could not accept blindly the deviations of their successors and in fact protested against the deviations. The family found a large collection of letters he received from Rav Moshe Feinstein written in response to his many questions. My brother knew what the previous gedolim thought and why on a wide range of topics. The haskomas he received clear attest that he understood the views of the gedolim of previous generations.  He had heard their responses directly orally or in correspondence. My brother was thus clearly someone who had known Shmuel.

Free speech alarm grows as White House targets rhetoric over Kirk’s killing

 https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5506688-trump-administration-charlie-kirk

The White House is using the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a basis to go after left-wing groups and threaten crackdowns on certain types of rhetoric, drawing skepticism from even some on the right.

Vice President Vance on Monday urged the public to report anyone they saw celebrating Kirk’s murder, comments that appeared at odds with his previous criticism of Europe for suppressing free speech.

“The murder of Charlie Kirk was a tragedy. He was on a campus doing what he had done many times before, engaging in debate with students, welcoming them to change his views,” said Aaron Terr, director of public advocacy at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

“Unfortunately the administration’s response has been disappointing and deeply chilling,” Terr added. “They have not sought to reaffirm the values of free speech, but are instead threatening to undermine them further by cracking down on Americans for what they say about Charlie Kirk or his killing.”

The threats to punish rhetoric and ideologies out of step with the administration’s policies and messaging are part of a broader trend during Trump’s second term.

Pam Bondi vs. the First Amendment

 https://www.thefp.com/p/pam-bondi-vs-the-first-amendment-free-speech-charlie-kirk

At last, something we can all agree on: The attorney general has no idea what she’s talking about.

In an interview that aired on Monday, our attorney general said that the federal government would crack down on “hate speech” in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination last week.

Hate speech is not illegal. It is not even a legal category in the U.S. Yes, we have laws against incitement, defamation, and libel, but nothing so broad and amorphous as “hate speech.” As Kirk himself once put it: “Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”

Don’t use Charlie Kirk’s death to stomp on the freedoms he defended

 https://nypost.com/2025/09/16/opinion/dont-use-charlie-kirks-death-to-stomp-on-the-freedoms-he-defended/

Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday started trying to walk back her embrace of a “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment, as well as an equally foolish “businesses cannot discriminate” stance against private rights of conscience.

This plays right into lefty charges that the right is rushing to suppress legal dissent in the wake of the horrific Charlie Kirk assassination.

Here’s Charlie Kirk, posting in May 2024: “Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment.”

That nicely sums up the American position going back at least to Thomas Jefferson (though Constitution-haters like Woodrow Wilson saw things differently): We have no “free speech” right if the government pushing words it deems “hateful.”

Hence Bondi’s reversal to arguing only that “speech that crosses the line into threats of violence is NOT protected by the First Amendment” and free speech “does NOT and will NEVER protect violence.” Right, and irrelevant.

Condolences and Request for Content Removal

 Dear Rabbi Eidensohn,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your dear brother, David, זצ"ל. It was truly an honor to have known him. I had the privilege of referring several couples to him over the years, and I witnessed firsthand his remarkable ability to restore שלום בית in the most extraordinary way. His memory is a blessing.

Upon learning of your loss and reflecting on your brother's legacy, I felt compelled to reach out to you regarding a matter that has weighed on my mind.

Years ago, in connection with your coverage of the Yoel Weiss case, content was published on your platform that included defamatory statements about me that are demonstrably false. This included references to arrests that were subsequently dismissed shortly thereafter, as well as allegations that originated from Moshe Rosenfeld, who has since been convicted in federal court on serious charges and has served his sentence.

In the spirit of justice and truth, and as a זכות for your brother's נשמה, I respectfully request that you remove any defamatory content, including my name and photograph, from your website related to these matters.

I hope you will consider this request favorably as an עילוי נשמה for David זצ"ל.

With sincere condolences and respect,

Rabbi Israel Meir Farkash

Witches consult for sick

Answer This has already been answered by the Terumas HaDeshen who wrote that asking witches and diviners is not explicitly prohibited. The Torah only prohibited Ov or Yedoni since that is very severe but it doesn’t apply to other type of witches or diviners even as a chumra as can be seen from the gemorah in Yevamos concerning the death penalty for a witch and it doesn’t learn the halacha from Ov and Yedoni. It would seem that the prohibition is solely because of Tamim Teheyu as the Rambam writes. He claims that it appears from his words that there is no actual prohibition. With all due respects I think he misread the Rambam who says elsewhere that it is prohibited to ask a diviner and he receives makos mardus  while the diviner who did an act of divination receives regular makkos. Obviously he holds that both violated a prohibited act. The asker since he didn’t do an act receives Makkos mardus. We learn this from Shaul’s asking the diviner and the gemora says it was a violation of Tamim teheyu. But that is only to believe completely in them and they are called fools. Even so the Ranbam states that only if they follow the advice of the diviner do they receive makkos. I have found that the Ramban claims that only Ov and Yedoni are prohibited to be asked by the Torah and not other types of diviners.  He says asking other types of diviners is prohibited by Tamim teheyu as was the case of Shaul. It would seem that any sick person is not prohibited to consult a diviner according to the Rambam.. The verse of Tamim teheyu is to simply have faith in G-d and have trust in Him engraved in the heart, therefore a sick person need not be strict in the prohibition. However since the basic prohibition is because divination of all types is nonsense and stupidity and lacks a real basis, it should not be permitted at all to consult a diviner because of Tamim teheyu. So if the sick person is in danger it should be permitted even according to the Rambam since the diviner sometimes says things that are true. We say even a doubtful lifesaving permits transgressing Shabbos which would result in capital punishment so surely our case is permitted. However if he is not in danger it is not permitted even if he might lose a limb. Nevertheless there are times to permit it even when there is no danger to life but only to a limb. This is in cases where it is known that the sickness was caused by witchcraft or evil spirit it would be permitted to consult a diviner according to the Rambam. In these matters, most witches or diviners are knowledgeable and can provide genuine help possibly even according to the Rambam. And it is possible to say that the Torah did not prohibit diviners in that case where their only purpose is to drive away the evil spirit. The Torah seems to have only prohibited asking them or to pursue them and to believe in them but the gemora permits nullifying witchcraft with witchcraft and surely through a goy. But all this does not apply to a normal sick person who is not in danger. In fact there is no leniency for him at all.

Perfection and Reality

Fifty years ago, I as a recently married young man arrived with my beautiful bride in Jerusalem during the week of Sheva Berachos.  We got deluxe accommodations at the home of a relative Dr. Wanderman who also was making Sheva Berchos. Rabbi Bulman who was then Mashgiach at Ohr Someach had consented to come. I had gotten to know Rabbi Bulman when he was the Rav of the Young Israel in Far Rockaway. As an interesting coincidence we had rented our apartment there from the new owner of his former house in Far Rockaway. Everything was perfect.

Rav Bulman got up to give a drasha. It was the week of Parshas Ki Savo. I still remember to this day the excitement from the guests at seeing the beloved Rav Bulman as many knew him from New York. .  He started out by noting the apparent strangeness of the Parsha discussing the announcement by a Jew that he had perfectly done all the mitzvos and commandments and yet this is described by Chazal as a Confession. He asked why should announcing you did everything correctly be called a confession. The term is usually used only for admission of errors and sins?

He said this is to teach us an important message. We need to know even when things seem perfect the reality is – even for marriage - is rarely achieved and yet we need to know what the ideal is even if we don’t actually accomplish it but we need to strive for it.

I found a similar idea in the letters of the Chazon Ish. True moderation is only for those who have strived for and yet have failed to accomplish perfection. Not those who strive directly for moderation

Devarim(26:13-14) You shall declare before your God “I have cleared out the consecrated portion from the house; and I have given it to the family of the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, just as You commanded me; I have neither transgressed nor neglected any of Your commandments: I have not eaten of it while in mourning, I have not cleared out any of it while I was impure, and I have not deposited any of it with the dead. I have obeyed my God have done just as You commanded me.

Shabbos (25a) It is written in the confession of the Maaser: “I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I destroyed from it while impure”

Chazon Ish (Letters 3:61): Just as the unvarnished facts and truth are synonymous so are uncompromising perfectionism and greatness. Perfectionism means to develop something to the ultimate degree. One who advocates moderation and despises perfectionism, his lot is with the frauds or with those lacking understanding. Without perfectionism, there can be no completion and if there is no perfection, there is no beginning. The beginning is with constant questions and replies. The perfecter is the brilliant respondent who orders everything in its rightful place. We regularly hear announcements from well known groups that they have nothing to do with uncompromising perfectionists. They nevertheless describe themselves as being the true Jews with appropriate faith to Torah. We simply note, however, that just as there is no such thing amongst lovers of wisdom as love for minimum knowledge and hate for the very wise there is similarly no such thing as loving Torah and mitzvos moderately and hating the uncompromising perfectionists. All the foundations of emuna, the 13 principles and their derivatives, are inherently incompatible with the lightweight wisdom and superficial life that exists in this world. In contrast clear recognition, energetic involvement; high precision in emuna is the hallmark of the perfectionist. Those who proudly testify on themselves that they have not tasted the sweetness of uncompromising perfection are simultaneously testifying that they are missing emuna in the foundation of religion both intellectually and emotionally. Their attachment is only lukewarm. The perfectionists, who despite their genuine wish to have pity on these doctrinaire moderates, do not honor and respect their opponents. The yawning abyss that separates them is naturally only widened as the result of the disputes that occur when they interact with each other. The only true moderation that can exist is that which results naturally to those who love the perfection and strive towards it and educate their children to strive for the peak. In contrast how unfortunate are those “moderates” who cast aspersions on the perfectionists. The obligation of our education is to perfection. The only genuine protection of the educational system is to be contemptuous and to ridicule those who denigrate perfection. However given the burning spirit of youth it is not appropriate to strongly condemn specific individuals amongst the unfortunates. Instead, the youth should be developed to have true love of Torah that requires personal effort and heavenly pleasantness and they should not have obstacles placed on this road. Those schools that are labeled as moderate schools, they are not successful because of the fraud that is inherent in moderation…

Hegseth rerouting Pentagon funds to refurbish Qatari jet into Air Force One

 https://thehill.com/opinion/lindseys-lens/5423497-hegseth-rerouting-pentagon-funds-to-refurbish-qatari-jet-into-air-force-one

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth just found nearly a billion dollars — $934 million to be exact — hidden deep in the Pentagon couch cushions. That money was supposed to fund Sentinel, a $77.7 billion modernization project for America’s aging nuclear missile system. Instead, it’s being rerouted to a classified project.

But here’s what we know about that classified project, thanks to reporting from The New York Times: part of it is funding a personal, Qatar-backed Air Force One project for President Trump.

Dedication to my brother Reb Dovid

The story begins in Russia where both sets of grandparents lived before coming to America.  I think a lot of my brother’s personality came from my mothers’s mother Freida Drazen. She was a person of strong beliefs, very confident a natural leader and totally dedicated to what she viewed as Truth. She was also a strong Zionist and was president of her Pioneer Women organization. She lived not far from Yeshiva Ner Yisroel and my bother often visited her with his friends and would spend much time in friendly though heated debates. She was the anchor of yiddishkeit for the family. She had received a set of Mishnayos in Russian for an engagement present. This was eventually given to me. She would often tell my brother “I have forgotten more Torah than you have learned.” He was also strongly influence by our father who was trained as a physicist but worked for the Navy Department as an expert in batteries – in particular submarine batteries. He received many patents and was given the highest honor the navy had for civilians for improving submarine range and underwater operation – this was before atomic submarines. He was also obsessed with not only doing the right thing but also everything had to be understood and not be done for social pressure. While he was disappointed that my brother didn’t go to YU on a full scholarship he fully supported his desire to go to Lakewood instead. When my brother decided to go every Shabbos to the Malin brother’s yeshiva in Washington he supported him. My mother was also very supportive. Even after my father was niftar and Rav Aharon told him to go home and help support the family, she told him to stay at Lakewood and continue learning. After Rav Aharon’s passing she supported his going to Morocco where he learned in a small yeshiva in the Atlas mountains. He left it when the Rosh yeshiva decided he would be a good husband for his daughter

My brother was born in Washington D.C. As the first born he naturally got a lot of attention, He grew up as a talented and very intelligent American. He was handsome, athletic, academically successful as well as a talented piano player. He was also a natural leader and got along with everyone. He had many friends.  However he was willing to sacrifice his obvious bright future to leave the American idea of Judaism for what he saw was the more authentic European form as represented by the Malin Brothers.

He ended up going to Chofetz Chaim yeshiva in Baltimore where he was a stand out student, and personality as well as head of student government. He was also a basketball star. Dr Kranzler who was the English principal in those days told me that everyone was greatly impressed by my brother and viewed him as a future godol. After Chofetz Chaim he was in Ner Yisroel for two years before he went to Lakewood

Lakewood was a different world. He was no longer the only smart student. In addition Rav Aharon was a European and didn’t coddle his students. My brother often said he spent a lot of time talking to Rav Aharon because he didn’t realize like the other students to be afraid and avoid Rav Aharon. When he had a chiddush he would simply go over and say it. He once went over after a shiur and told Rav Aharon that he didn’t understand it. Rav Aharon reviewed it with him but he still said he didn’t understand it. Reb Aharon tried again but he still didn’t understand it. Rav Aharon simply slapped him. My sister remembers that when he came home for visits from Lakewood she was about 6 andhe would review Rav Aharon's shiur with her

At some point my brother decided his purpose should be to influence others to be frum and he started writing anf publishing pamphlets – such as Dear Robert which he also paid for publication. He told me many times that the reason he could focus on doing what was true was because he was not dependent on others that might get offended. He was not a rosh yeshiva who needed the support of the parents or rich donors. He was basically supported by the efforts of his wife who ran a clothing store in the house.

It is important to note that he didn’t claim the authority to disagree with contemporary poskim and rabbis. However he had no problem saying they were mistaken because he had had a close relation with gedolim of the previous generation such as Rav Aharon, Rav Moshe and Rav Yakov and Rav Eliyashiv and had heard directly from them their views. In addition he was a real talmid chachom. In fact he had gotten strong approbations to his halacha seforim from Rav Yakov and Rav Moshe. In fact he had clear sources for everything he said and did. He was constantly by Rav Moshe and Rav Yaakov. I heard from Rav Wozner of Monsey that there was not a day that his father was not consulted by my brother. He became a major voice for many topics such as not taking money from government programs- especially not by fraud, Not to seek support of politicians who support immorality. He spent much time opposing drafting women into the army. However his major effort involved Gitten and Aguna. I once went with him to see a major posek in Israel. After relating the major halachic concerns about gitten in America. He was told that while the problems obviously existed it was simply an American problem  and he would not get involved.  When he was writing about gezel Akum (stealing from goyim). He consulted many gedolim. In Israel he went to see a major posek. While waiting, the Gadol’s son asked him why he was wasting his father’s time when he could tell him his father’s views. So he told him the question. The son replied that he had talked to his father many times and his father clearly held that it was permitted. My brother said he would still wait to hear it directly from the father.  When he finally got to see the gadol he replied, "I hold it is prohibited but don’t tell anyone this in my name."

It was not simply that my brother collected information from Gedolim but he also had a close relationship with them. I remember when my daughter was born and my wife wanted a beracha from Rav Yakov there was a major problem. Rav Yakov was recuperating from a major stroke and could not even speak. .Nonetheless my brother got me to Rav Yakov. I still remember sitting holding Rav Yakov’s hand while his wife told me to ask for whatever I wanted and she conveyed it to her husband. In addition there were times that these gedolim asked him to serve as an intermediary.

Aside from his community concerns he was a father to a large family of talented and successful community assets as well as being a good husband and son. This was reciprocated. For the last almost 4 years he was hospitalized with a life threatening condition. He was intubated and thus couldn’t speak and had lost the ability to recognize even family. The doctors of course wanted him dead. For the entire period his devoted wife stayed by him day and night and ensured he got the care he needed. He was visited regularly by family.

He often consulted others. For example he had a Rebbe for Kabbala – Rav Shmuel Toledano. Once the famous Maggid of Jerusalem Rav Schwadron visited Monsey. At that time someone had started a business of renting movies. He asked him what should be done since it was obvious that Monsey was not the place for movies. Rav Schwadron replied he didn’t understand the problem. My brother replied that there was a Hashchasa(destructive factor) being introduced into the community. Rav Schwadron than understood the question. ”You mean there is a problem of Hashchasha?” The real issue of hashchasa is yeshivos

My first exposure to the problem of abuse was when he took me to a well known yeshiva for the summer, There was a wild guy there who was constantly beating up the other students. The Rosh yeshiva simply kicked him out of the yeshiva. My brother contacted the boy’s father who said his son was crazy and once even hit his mother in the head with a hammer. My brother went back to the rosh yeshiva and told him it was not a good idea and irresponsible to simply kick the kid out because he was dangerous and that he should take him back on the condition of therapy or he would call the police.

Reb Aharon Kotler - Do We Still Follow His Ways?

Loss of an Advocate for the Sanctity of Jewish Marriage: R. David Eidensohn zatza"l

 R. David Eidensohn has ascended to the Heavenly Academy. He was the brother of (yibadel le-chaim) R. Daniel Eidensohn, editor of Daas Torah blog, where I serve as an associate writer. See https://daattorah.blogspot.com/

It was R. David Eidensohn who originally sounded the alarm against the blood libel that was inflicted by R. Hershel Schachter (acting on behalf of Ms. Tamar Epstein) against Reb Aharon Friedman [falsely claiming that Reb Aharon is obligated to write her a get, a terrible violation of Exodus 20:14 by Rabbi Schachter]. And then, when thanks to the good advice of R. David Eidensohn, Reb Aharon refused to write any get, it was R. David Eidensohn who subsequently sounded the alarm against the fraudulent Kamenetzky-Greenblatt heter [directing Ms. Epstein to "remarry" with no get whatsoever], inspiring numerous batei din worldwide to declare that Ms. Epstein is still the wife of Reb Aharon, and further prompting the Beit Din Tzedek of the Edah ha-Charedit in Jerusalem to instruct all rabbis throughout the globe to protest the fraudulent Kamenetzky-Greenblatt heterI have published several articles on this matter, including most recently at https://daattorah.blogspot.com/2025/03/shabbat-zakhor-and-agunah-problem-by.html [-and also regarding the tangential topic of blood libels at https://daattorah.blogspot.com/2025/04/a-passover-message-to-president-putin.html ].
I would like to follow up on the letter I sent the Rabbanan earlier this week (Tuesday, Sept. 9), inspired by the ascent to the Heavenly Academy of R. David Eidensohn, a scholar who defended the sanctity of Jewish marriage from the disciples of Saul Lieberman who sought to mislead every Jewess to receive a get upon demand and say shalom yihiyeh li ki bi-shrirut libi elekh (Deut. 29:18). [I personally consulted by long-distance telephone with R. David Eidensohn when I formulated my prenup at https://www.scribd.com/document/176990434/Prenuptial-Agreements, and he is acknowledged in the credits.]
R. David Eidensohn identified three pitfalls that occur with corrupt mesadrei kiddushin today, including (a) those mesadrei kiddushin that will arrange a chuppah for the ex-wife of an innocent husband who was coerced by the 1992 New York Get Law [-forbidden by Maran Rav Bleich, and as mentioned this past Tuesday, Maran Rav Bleich also forbids the analogous situation where the 1990 Canada Get Law was used against an innocent husband. Not only that, but even in a case of seemingly remote doubt, where no secular court was involved and the couple divorced in Beth Din amicably, in an actual shiddukh with a divorcee that was proposed to me, Maran Rav Bleich denied me the right to pop the question to the lady, and this despite R. Ariel Wasserlauf's independent investigation (at my request), the results of which he generously shared with me, that the ex-husband was delighted to jettison the ex-wife in order to marry a second wife, to whom he is now happily married with five children. Furthermore, this father of five (from the second wife to whom he is happily married) currently serves as the ba'al korei of one of the Dayanim of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal R. David Rephael Banon, and in fact Rabbi Banon supervised the actual get in question, such that li-kh'orah "all systems go" and this was a glatt kosher divorce. NoMaran Rav Bleich holds I still have to be choshesh that the innocent ex-husband (who is not in the category of kofin le-garesh) was afraid of the 1990 Canada Get Law, and so better I should be stuck as a bachelor rather than risk even the possibility of adultery. See with your own eyes how serious this problem of the 1990 Canada Get Law has become.]; (b) those mesadrei kiddushin that will arrange a chuppah for the ex-wife of an innocent husband who was coerced by the 1993 Beth Din of America prenup [-an illegitimate and heretical prenup like that of Saul Lieberman, unlike mine which is recognized as valid by the universal consensus of poskim]; and (c) R. Nota Zvi Greenblatt who fraudulently arranged a pseudo-chuppah for Ms. Tamar Epstein who had no get altogether. Taking my cue from R. David Eidensohn [and after shimush with Maran Rav Bleich], I published a series of refutations to all of these corrupt mesadrei kiddushin, and as a result of this, I was able to ensure that a double get zikkuy was arranged for the agunah whose case I brought to the Supreme Court of Canada. Yodu la-Ha-Shem chasdo, ve-nifle'otav li-vnei adam (Psalm 107).
R. David Eidensohn also tackled a fourth pitfall which I have never addressed in published form: The humiliation tactics of ORA as representing a form of illicit coercion on gittin [in the case of innocent husbands]. He discusses this here: https://torahhalacha.blogspot.com/2014/11/ora-mamzer-producing-organization.html#comment-form , and even mentions the case of Yisrael Meir Kin that I referenced in my letter earlier this week. In a very recent development, Maran Rav Bleich has also addressed the humiliation tactics of ORA in his latest two-part article in Tradition. I have not yet read the article as the journal has not yet arrived in any Montreal library, but I know from the summary published on the Tradition website that Maran Rav Bleich refutes ORA. Maran Rav Bleich also briefly references this two-part article in his recent recorded audio lecture (just two weeks ago) at https://www.yutorah.org/lectures/1145961/Ervas-Davar-(Even-HaEzer-119)
I also draw your attention to a video that the late R. David Eidensohn published during his lifetime entitled "Reb Aharon Kotler - Do We Still Follow His Ways," warning the public about Ms. Tamar Epstein's false antics in claiming that she can remarry without a get [-this video was released in 2014 even before she actually went ahead a year later in 2015 and was makhshelet R. Nota Zvi Greenblatt in a berakhah le-vatalah at an adulterous pseudo-chuppah]. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=83zRqBsWuU0 In the final segment of the video, Rabbi Eidensohn movingly says as follows (31:55 into the recording):
"And those of us who remember Reb Aharon[*], who remember that there's such a thing as a Shulchan Arukh and that being a rosh yeshivah doesn't make you a gadol that you're bigger than the Shulchan Arukh. So, those of us - we're outnumbered badly, but there's plenty of us, and we have to unite and be strong and keep up the derekh ha-yashar in Torah."
[* = The reference is to R. Aharon Kotler.]
So this is why I am writing the present e-mail. R. David Eidensohn has left this world, but if we coordinate ourselves as he advocated, we can continue his legacy and rescue Klal Yisrael from a mamzer epidemic. "A conference of the righteous is beneficial to them and beneficial to the world" (Sanhedrin 71b).
This week, when we will read "a lady shall be betrothed, and another gentleman shall cohabit with her" (Deut. 28:30), I pray that tikhleh ha-shanah ve-kileloteha (Megillah 31b).
Thank you,
Shalom C. Spira

Harvard secures win in fight with Trump over federal research funding

 https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/03/harvard-victory-battle-trump-federal-funding-00542654

A federal judge ruled Wednesday the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze more than $2 billion in federal research grants from Harvard University was illegal.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, a Barack Obama appointee, in an 84-page opinion, acknowledged the university “could (and should) have done a better job of dealing with” antisemitism on campus. But Burroughs said research grant terminations and antisemitism are not particularly connected.

“A review of the administrative record makes it difficult to conclude anything other than that Defendants used antisemitism as a smokescreen for a targeted, ideologically-motivated assault on this country’s premier universities,” Burroughs wrote.

. “The idea that fighting antisemitism is Defendants’ true aim is belied by the fact that the majority of the demands they are making of Harvard to restore its research funding are directed, on their face, at Harvard’s governance, staffing and hiring practices, and admissions policies—all of which have little to do with antisemitism and everything to do with Defendants’ power and political views,” the judge wrote.

Garber, in a statement late Wednesday, acknowledged the university isn’t fully in the clear yet.

“Even as we acknowledge the important principles affirmed in today’s ruling, we will continue to assess the implications of the opinion, monitor further legal developments, and be mindful of the changing landscape in which we seek to fulfill our mission,” he said in a letter to the campus community.

Police on Sunday arrested a prominent Haredi rabbi suspected of committing sexual offenses against several young women, some of whom were underage girls at the time of the alleged incidents.

Rabbi Haim Yosef Abergel — a revered rabbi from Netivot known for his unwavering support for IDF conscription and secular studies — is suspected of exploiting his power to pressure girls as young as 12 into divulging sexually explicit information about themselves, according to Hebrew reports.

His victims had approached him seeking halachic advice regarding their personal relationships and family issues. Instead, he was said to have questioned the girls over phone calls about their sexual desires and “immodest thoughts,” Ynet reported.

Johnson backs off claim that Trump was an ‘FBI informant’ in Epstein case

Last week, Johnson told reporters on Capitol Hill that Trump cares deeply about the crimes Epstein committed and said that Trump “was an FBI informant to try to take this stuff down.”

“The Speaker is reiterating what the victims’ attorney said, which is that Donald Trump — who kicked Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago — was the only one more than a decade ago willing to help prosecutors expose Epstein for being a disgusting child predator,” the statement from Johnson’s office read.

Experts skeptical of legality of Trump’s strike on alleged drug boat

 https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/06/politics/venezuela-boat-strike-trump-legality

The president has the authority under Article II of the Constitution to use military force when it is in the national interest, and when it does not amount to “war” in the constitutional sense, which requires an act of Congress. Past administrations have interpreted these standards fairly broadly — especially in the decadeslong war against al Qaeda, ISIS and other evolving Islamist terror groups — and Trump officials have also claimed the president was exercising his inherent Article II powers here.

But again, legal experts say, there is a wrinkle: That amorphous power still requires that the president establish that its targets are legitimate military targets who should be treated as combatants under both international and domestic law. Cartel members and drug smugglers have traditionally been treated as criminals with due process rights — not enemy combatants — and the Trump administration has yet to offer a justification beyond the FTO defense that it is in a state of armed conflict with Tren de Aragua.

Finucane and others pointed to Rubio’s admission that the boat could have been interdicted rather than destroyed — as has been done in the past — but that the president ordered a lethal strike as a matter of first, not last, resort.

Harvard Beats Trump Admin—Judge's 5 Key Takeaways

 https://www.newsweek.com/harvard-trump-admin-judges-takeaways-2124329

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the Trump administration to reverse its cuts of more than $2.6 billion in funding for Harvard University.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs ruled the cuts amounted to illegal retaliation for Harvard's rejection of the Trump administration's demands for changes to its governance and policies.

The Trump administration had tied the funding freezes to Harvard's delays in dealing with antisemitism. But Burroughs, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, said in her ruling that there was "little connection between the research affected by the grant terminations and antisemitism."

She wrote: "In fact, a review of the administrative record makes it difficult to conclude anything other than that (the government) used antisemitism as a smokescreen for a targeted, ideologically-motivated assault on this country's premier universities."

Burroughs said it resulted in the government terminating Harvard's grants without complying with the law and retaliating against the school in violation of its free speech rights under the First Amendment.

Burroughs said that it was "clear, even based solely on Harvard's own admissions, that Harvard has been plagued by antisemitism in recent years and could (and should) have done a better job of dealing with the issue."

DC sues Trump administration over National Guard deployment

Washington, DC, officials are suing the Trump administration, accusing the president of violating the Constitution and federal law by sending thousands of National Guard troops into the city without consent from local leaders.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday by DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb, claims the troops – many from out of state – have been deputized by the US Marshals office and are patrolling neighborhoods, conducting searches and making arrests, despite federal laws that generally bar the military from acting as local police.

The lawsuit argues that the deployment undermines the city’s autonomy, erodes trust between residents and law enforcement and damages the local economy by discouraging tourism and hurting businesses.

A group of anonymous federal judges is criticizing the Supreme Court for overturning lower court rulings and siding with President Donald Trump's administration with little to no explanation, NBC News reported Thursday.

NBC spoke with 12 federal judges, appointed by Democratic and Republican presidents including Trump, who pointed to a trend of lower court decisions being overturned by emergency rulings from the high court. These cases often see prominent members of Trump's administration lashing out at lower court judges before their cases are overturned.

Ten of the 12 judges argued the Supreme Court should offer more explanation when overturning such decisions, saying emergency rulings in such cases imply poor work on the part of lower court judges.

The daughter was embarrassed and is now angry with her mother  but the mother felt she was being helpful. How would you handle this?

Donald Trump Suffers Big Legal Blow Over Migrant Deportations

President Donald Trump was blocked by a federal appeals court from using an 18th-century wartime law, the Alien Enemies Act, to deport Venezuelan migrants his administration says belong to the criminal gang Tren de Aragua.

The 2-1 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit found that there was not an "invasion or predatory incursion" by a foreign power as required by the 1798 statute to justify its invocation in the case of this group of migrants.
