A spokesman for the ultra-Orthodox Shas party says it will vote in favor of dissolving the Knesset on Wednesday.
“As things stand, we will vote on Wednesday in favor of dissolving the Knesset, Shas spokesman Asher Medina says in an interview with the Kol Beramah radio station.
“We are disappointed with [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu. We expected him to take action previously and not just in the past few days,” he says.
I don't understand the strategy.
ReplyDeleteIf Bibi wins the next election, the same government essentially sachets back into office and we're back to the same stupidity, except for the huge amount it cost to have the election and the high level of societal vitriol that will have been released during the campaign.
If Bibi loses, the Center Left takes over and they're out for revenge against Bibi, the Chareidim and the Religious Zionists. Their government will be petty and venal and will punish their opponents. So they lose.
What's the alternative? What's the point in being in a government which promised this legislation as a condition of joining the coalition to begin with?
DeleteRight now the Chareidim suck billions out of the Israeli treasury every year while demanding no responsiblity for the welfare or defence of the state be put on upon them. This whole fight is about wanted to be even bigger parasites but if they lose the next election, they'll discover how upset the rest of the country will be with them. Better to hang on and delay that reckoning until next year.
DeleteIn the Torah, Moshe rabbeinu was praying rather than learning when Israel were fighting a war.. which makes sense now, the idea that learning wins battles doesn't have evidence in the Biblical battles. Maybe because we no longer have neviim, the focus has been transferred to learning, but we still need people to fight.
DeletePerhaps the chareidi should invent some robotic warriors, it will help them and the idf.
However, Moshe Rabeinu was out there next to the battlefield, not hiding away back in his tent.
DeleteJoshua, who was also a Navi, wasn't a rosh yeshiva. He was fighting. So either he's a fighting Navi or a hesder rosh yeshiva.
