Although the election was initially expected to tilt in favor of the Conservative Party, Trump turned the tables by taunting Trudeau as "Governor Trudeau" and imposing steep tariffs on the U.S.'s closest trading partner, leading to a surge in popularity for Trudeau, Carney and the Liberal Party.
Trump is connected to Carney through Carney's investment firm, Brookfield. Like professional wrestlers, they may snarl at each other in the ring for the pleasure of the audience but in the change room they're buddies looking forward to going for beer together after the event.
ReplyDeleteTrump's 51st State taunting served to revive the Liberals who had spent 10 years calling Canada a racist, genocidal post-national countries with nothing to feel patriotic about. Suddenly those same Liberals wrapped themselves in the Maple Leaf and shouted their determination to defend Canada from a faux theat. And it worked. Canadian voters, reliably stupid, never figured out that short of a military invasion, there is no legal way for Canada to join the US, even if both sides wanted it. Instead they rallied around the Liberals and handed them the predictable victory.
I don't doubt that many of Trump's tariff announcements were secretly telegraphed to Brookfield and influenced their activites to enhance the wealth of both men.
And frankly, the only thing we know about Carney's foreign policy so far is that he supports Hamas. So poor us.
