  1. This man. Donin, was put in herem /nidui by the bd, and he later converted and denounced the Talmud - leading to the burning of the texts.

Another similar story, the Noda byehuda and bet Din had condemned a rasha. The rasha then denounced the Jews to the antisemitic queen of hungary. She would hike taxes or expel the jews. The dispute between rav Emden and Rav Eibeschutz was taken to the noda byehuda, who tried to make peace between the two sides. R' Eibeschutz 's son in law was a close advisor to the queen - who had great respect for his chochmah - he managed to sway the queen, who retracted her evil gezeira against the jews.
Lesson - even when dealing with secular or otherwise unorthodox jews, internal peace is still if great importance.

  2. Nah. He'll resign on January 10. On January 12, President Pence will pardon him pro-actively. On January 21, Vlad Putin will transfer more than enough money into his bank accounts to pay off any creditors looking to sue him. He'll be fine.

  4. correct - it is just that on a number of occasions it has proven costly to us. There was the story in the Talmud of the man who was wrongly invited to a aprty and then embarrased by the host => leading to churban Beit Hamikdash. I've forgotten their names at this late hour.
