It was the height of the Second Intifada, and the Clinton administration’s Middle East envoy was having breakfast in a near-empty dining hall at Jerusalem’s King David Hotel. While so many foreigners had been avoiding the flashpoint city that was reeling under a wave of suicide bombings, Dennis Ross recalls how two guests from the United States made a point of being in the Jewish state during the trying time and had joined him at breakfast that day: Senator Joe Biden and his foreign policy aide Antony Blinken.

Mr. Blinken seems highly qualified for the job. But since is a blog that deals with "issues of Jewish identity" it is worth noting the following from the March 3, 2002 issue of the New York Times:
ReplyDelete"Evan Maureen Ryan, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Ryan Jr. of Alexandria, Va., was married yesterday to Antony John Blinken, the son of Judith Pisar of Paris and Donald M. Blinken of New York. The Rev. William J. Byron, a Roman Catholic priest, performed the ceremony with Rabbi Harold White at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Washington."
I weep for what has become of American Jewry.
