Jewish leaders slam NY state ad on truck accusing Jews of spreading polio

 https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/369397

Jewish leaders in New York reacted with outrage after the state Health Department sent a truck into Jewish neighborhoods in Long Island accusing the community of spreading polio, according to the New York Post.

On the truck was the message: “Polio is Spreading in Israel. Get Immunized Now.”

Many of the residents targeted by the truck in the Five Towns area of Long Island are Orthodox Jews.

The public service ad on the truck reminded State Assemblyman Ari Brown of the antisemitic trope of “Jews spreading disease.”

Rick Scott's 'automatic death penalty' for school shooters is illegal

 https://www.msnbc.com/deadline-white-house/deadline-legal-blog/nashville-school-shooting-rick-scott-automatic-death-penalty-rcna76951

Leaving aside, for a moment, the death penalty’s dubious deterrent effect, the more immediate issue with “automatic” capital punishment is that it’s illegal.

If a defendant is convicted in a death penalty case, then a separate trial is held in which the jury weighs aggravating and mitigating factors, to determine whether to recommend a death sentence. Prosecutors wouldn’t go through that process if they didn’t have to. Indeed, the Supreme Court has struck down mandatory capital punishment on multiple occasions, reiterating that individualized sentencing is needed.

A tense exchange on Capitol Hill that perfectly captures America’s divide on guns

 https://edition.cnn.com/2023/03/30/politics/american-gun-divide-nashville/index.html

While Congress did pass the first major gun safety bill in decades last year, the aftermath of the shooting in Nashville has shown how impossible even minor overhauls are now that Republicans control the House. And the reality of a divided nation and a political system that grants small, conservative and rural states equal representation to more liberal, populous states in the Senate, where a 60-vote supermajority is needed for major legislation, also means sweeping gun safety legislation is all but impossible despite Democratic control of the chamber.

GOP Rep. Clay Higgins Claims There's 'No Such Thing' As Gun Violence

 https://www.newsweek.com/gop-clay-higgins-claims-no-such-thing-gun-violence-1791297

"America suffers from the same rates of mental illness as any other industrial country, yet we are the only one that wakes up to this horrific news every day, and it's because of our uniquely easy access to firearms," Brown told Newsweek in an email. "Gun violence is now the number one killer of our children. There is a reason why mass shootings in the U.S. skyrocketed after Congress refused to renew the assault weapons ban."

Africa is splitting into two as new ocean forms, researchers say

 https://www.jpost.com/environment-and-climate-change/article-735092

Currently-landlocked countries in Africa, such as Ethiopia, Uganda and more will see the introduction of a coastline – expanding possibilities for trade and production. Further, the split would lead to the emergence of a new ocean.

While the splitting of the African continent and the subsequent ocean that would arise holds an abundance of possibilities, the continent will not completely split for another 5 to 10 million years, according to researchers.

Audrey Hale Manifesto Release Raises Major Concerns From LGBTQ+ Groups

 https://www.newsweek.com/audrey-hale-manifesto-release-raises-major-concerns-among-lgbtq-groups-1790938

On Tuesday, the Human Rights Campaign referred Newsweek to their initial statement on the shooting, which reads: "We still don't know all the facts about what happened in Nashville. We do know that every study available shows that transgender and non-binary people are much more likely to be the victims of violence, rather than the perpetrators of it."

"Regardless of the reason for this shooting, the use of violence is reprehensible and we renew our call for common-sense gun safety legislation," the statement said.

Republican Honestly States GOP Plan for School Shootings: ‘We’re Not Going to Fix It’

 https://news.yahoo.com/republican-honestly-states-gop-plan-164357069.html

The Republican Party refuses to support meaningful gun control measures, which means they’re forced to trot out what seem like increasingly ridiculous solutions to the nation’s epidemic of school shootings. They’ve suggested everything from bulletproof backpacks to turning educational institutions into heavily armed compounds. Rick Scott floated the death penalty as a deterrent on Monday, despite that school shooters — reportedly including the one who killed six people at the Covenant School in Nashville — are often prepared to die at the scene.

Republican Rep. Andy Ogles, his wife and two of their three kids posed with the weapons as they stood in front of a decorated Christmas tree and smiled for the camera in 2021.

The wife and daughter held assault rifles, a particularly deadly weapon that Monday’s killer, Audrey Hale, toted during her Nashville rampage.

A 2019 report analyzing targeted school violence by the Secret Service found that many of the schools that "experienced these tragedies had implemented physical security measures (e.g., cameras, school resource officers, lockdown procedures)." It added: "Prevention is key."
