The U.S. laid out several goals when it joined Israel with strikes against Iran on February 28. It succeeded in beating down Iran's conventional military power. But it did not fully achieve the White House's other stated objectives: eliminating the threat of Iranian nuclear weapons, regime change, dismantling Tehran's support for proxy groups and wiping out its ballistic missile capacity.
"There was no meaningful victory for ordinary Iranians, for regional stability, or for U.S. strategy."
"It's one of those cases in history where everyone fails."
"Significant achievements for both sides—though the U.S. achievements that mattered most arguably occurred last year in one day."
"Iran came out on top because, while the United States accomplished key military objectives, the political impact of the deal and the economic relief the deal could provide may allow Iran to undo U.S. military success."
"It is difficult to make the case that this war achieved any significant positive result for the United States."
"Neither side will gain a complete victory. That said, I think the United States is in a better position."
"There is a relative consensus worldwide, even in the United States, that Iran has won the war and President Trump lost this war."
The reason for the administration's new hostility towards Israel is starting to leak out.
ReplyDeleteBibi promised Trump and easy and quick war. "We'll wipe out the leadership, you'll sink their navy and the survivors will flee to Moscow, the Kurds will be our internal ground forces, and the people will rise up and take control of the country. You'll be a hero!"
This is an unforgiveable strategic mistake. Secular dictators flee when the palace is surrounded. Religious dictators prefer to burn the whole place down rather than surrender AND ISRAEL SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT. Even if the US had dropped a nuke on Tehran and said "Okay, you have 24 hours to surrender or we'll do it on another city" they would continue to fight on.
Instead of a amazing lighting victory, Trump has to surrender. No wonder he's bitter over Israel.
the Kurds will be our internal ground forces???? Trump stopped them!!!
DeleteI don't get that argument. Is Trump a child that he blames Netanyahu? He doesn't have his own intelligence and diplomats to keep him informed? A man who blames his wife after making a bad investment is a man exposing himself as a fool.
ReplyDeleteThey are also attacking Europe for not supporting them during the war. See the inconsistency? israel supported them, and still getting flak from them.
DeleteIsrael is getting blamed because it's Israel's fault.
DeleteLook, there are two main competing goals here.
Bibi wanted to eliminate Iran as a threat permanently or at least for a while.
Trump wants to bolster his popularity for the mid-terms and also a Nobel Peace Price.
Bibi thought he could accomplish both. A quick war with incredible outcomes and minimal to no American losses. A major world-changing outcome. Trump couldn't resist. Then he bungled it by not being aggressive enough and had to surrender to Iran as a consequence. No quick war. No world-changing outcome. No peace price. And who's to blame? Bibi for talking him into this.
