Trump insists Putin wants peace. But the war is raging – and Ukrainian civilians are dying

As US President Donald Trump pushes for “a deal” to end the war in Ukraine – and dresses down Ukraine’s president in front of reporters at the White House – Moscow every day keeps launching deadly attacks against Ukraine.

And while Trump seemed to suggest Putin is ready to negotiate, the Russian leader has been busy reiterating demands that have long been unacceptable to Kyiv.

Putin has repeatedly made his goals clear: He wants to gain control over the entirety of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, as well as hold onto the southern Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which Moscow illegally annexed in 2014.

  1. If for some reason Trump becomes incapacitated or dies, then his vice president Vance will become the leader which is an even more dangerous prospect. Plus there's possibility that he will run and be elected in 2028.

  2. People forget that Crimea was part of Russia for a very long time and was tranferred to Ukraine by the Ukrainian Soviet leader Kruschev. At least for that, you can't blame the Russians for wanting that back.

    1. Most of America was owned by other countries perhaps that should go back also. I seem to recall Hitler used that as a justification for attacking Poland. In case you missed it Russia is trying to take the rest of Ukraine. It is not nostalgia but a desire fore power!

    2. Not the same thing.
Ukraine as a distinct, independent country only dates back to 1991. Before that it was a part of Russia. Crimea was never part of a Ukrainian state because it didn't exist.
