Trump doubles down on border wall, as polls show voters turning against his shutdown strategy

.foxnews

President Trump used an address Monday to the American Farm Bureau convention to dig in on his call for a border wall, even as new polling indicates most Americans oppose his administration’s strategy of demanding money for the U.S.-Mexico barrier in exchange for ending the partial government shutdown.
Speaking in New Orleans, Trump said there was “no substitute” for a physical barrier along the southern border with Mexico and accused Democrats of playing politics in refusing to negotiate on the issue.
“They think if they stop me, it’ll be good for 2020,” Trump said of Democrats in Congress. “We need that barrier. … If you don’t have that barrier there, there is not a thing you can do.”
But as the partial shutdown enters its fourth week and hundreds of thousands of federal workers miss their first paychecks, fresh polling suggests the president is losing the battle of public opinion.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday found that 63 percent of voters agree with the Democratic proposal to reopen parts of the government that do not involve border security, with 30 percent opposed. The same poll found 63 percent also oppose using the shutdown to force wall funding, with just 32 percent supporting.
The poll found that 56 percent of American voters blame Trump and Republicans in Congress for the partial shutdown, compared with 36 percent who say Democrats are responsible.
An earlier Washington Post-ABC News poll also found more Americans blame Trump and the Republicans than the Democrats over the stalemate -- though the same survey showed support for a wall growing to 42 percent, up from 34 percent a year ago.

  1. I 100% back Pres. Trump on this issue. The polls, are interesting, but they may fail to indicate the depth of support of those who feel The Wall should be funded.

  3. My point was that politicians are not only interested in the positions voters have, but also on the prioritization of those positions.

For example, a voter may have prioritized the issue of the relocation of the U.S. embassy in Eretz Yisrael. The voter was thus pleased that Pres. Trump moved the U.S. embassy.

That same voter may oppose The Wall. In fact, that same voter may oppose Pres. Trump on just about all issues.

However, since the #1 issue for that voter was the moving of the embassy, then comes the next Presidential election, the voter votes for Trump -- despite the voter opposing The Wall.

Polls don't necessarily reflect this prioritization of issues.

So, let's say 25% of the electorate has prioritized buildingThe Wall. That means that if Pres. Trump doesn't do everything within his power to build The Wall, that he will not get their vote in the next election.

Of the remaining 75% of th electorate who oppose The Wall, say 50% of them have prioritized the issue of not building The Wall, i.e., if The Wall is built, they won't vote for Donald Trump in the next Presidential election.

50% of 75% is 37.25% of the electorate.

Given these numbers, one would think that Pres. Trump should not build The Wall.

The situation is complicated by the fact that most of the people prioritizing the NOT building of The Wall weren't going to vote for him anyway, because of other issues.

In summary, Pres. Trump's best move politically is to build The Wall, despite the polls saying only a minority of the electorate supports it.

Democracy stinks. But that's the way it is.

  4. Bravo the William Barr hearings. See, to Trump and his base (me...) the partial government shutdown is not important. What Pompeo says is far more important right now. Pompeo is ranting against Iran. Beautiful. Yes, America needs clarity/laws on immigration... First, the Mueller witch hunt must end completely. Second, democrats must abandon their impeach the mutherfu... strategy. Mitch McConnell is right not to hold hearings on bills he knows Trump will veto. Israel now has a new head of army to replace the most excellent Eisencot, Aviv Kochavi. See http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/257692
This is what is important now. “Moses said to Joshua, Pick some men for us, and go out and do battle with Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill, with the rod of God in my hand. Joshua did as Moses told him and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.” (Exodus 17:9-10).
The next decision release date for me is February 14, 2019.

  5. Well, those people (i.e., you) are just stupid. Trump has been president for over two years. During two years of that time the House, Senate, and Presidency were controlled by Republicans. They did absolutely nothing to advance the construction of the wall. So in any event, Trump has not done "everything within his power to build The Wall."
And you know why he didn't build the wall during those two years? First, everyone, Republican lawmakers included, knows that it is a stupid idea because it will not solve the real problems on the southern border (i.e., drug smuggling in trucks at checkpoints and people overstaying their visas). Second, I don't believe Trump wants a wall either. What Trump wants is the chance to blast his opponents for objecting to the wall. The second he has the wall, he loses that.

    This week’s parsha בשלח
“As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites caught sight of the Egyptians advancing upon them.
Greatly frightened, the Israelites cried out to the Lord. And they said to Moses, Was it for
want of graves in Egypt that you brought us to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, taking us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, saying, Let us be, and we will serve the Egyptians, for it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness?” (Exodus 14:10-12).

    Yesterday Nancy Pelosi
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/pelosi-asks-trump-to-delay-state-of-the-union-11547650192

“Mrs. Pelosi (D., Calif.) said the event would put undue strains on the agencies that oversee security, the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, which remain unfunded. “Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address,” Mrs. Pelosi wrote.”

Really? The rebels tirade/rant against Moses seemingly asks if there is a want of graves in Egypt. The Pelowsi tirade/rant seemingly asks if security would be adequate for Trump to speak in the USA Congress. Remember how Obama and Biden embarrassed themselves regarding Netanyahu speaking in the USA Congress...

    Kudos to Joseph Orlow.

I’m waiting for the response of Trump. “The first to plead his case seems right Till the other party examines him” (Proverbs 18:17). Yes, I’m waiting for Trump’s response to the Mueller report that may be released soon...
