Prof Doerr says a combination of drier, hotter and windy conditions is the key factor in these recent fires.
He adds that even in areas where there have been attempts to reduce flammable material in forests, it's not clear how much difference this would have made.
"The bottom line remains that the extreme meteorological conditions are the main drivers for these extreme fires."
One thing that has become clear up here in Canada at least is that modern forest management guidelines are causing more fires by banning controlled burns which cut down on deadwood and allow safer growth. But people who don't like controlled burns because it released CO2 into the air scream "No, it's climate change." No, the fires started accelerating when they let the ecofascists decide policy.
