Our community is not getting bad press because we have child molesters. Sadly, every society in the world has its share. We are getting slammed precisely because some folks seem to care more about our reputation and less about the safety of our children and the trauma of abuse survivors.
Our public image will dramatically improve when we direct our focus inward; reporting abusers to the authorities, encouraging victims to come forward without fear of retribution, helping them get professional counseling, and making research-based, child safety training for children, parents and educators a top priority.
Let’s keep child safety the “Main Thing.”
Here's the counter-argument (not that I agree, just presenting): victims come and go but the community remains. Let's say we pull away the curtain and expose the rot for what it is. Great. The victims get justice. Bad rabbis go to jail. And then...
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's mass defections as families and children say "Enough! I don't want to be a part of such a community!" There's endless villification in the press. The community, both the bad and the good parts (and I suppose there's good parts) is shattered and ruined. And they will argue that this is not worth the price. Better to keep the curtain pulled shut and the victims silenced so the community can survive.
