Perl Perry & Dr. Phil: Orthdoxy is a cult!

4 comments :

  1. Well first of all she's involved in a highly public battle with her ex for custody of their kids so it makes sense for her to attack Orthodoxy as a cult.
Secondly, she's got a self-promotion angle as well so the "poor wittle me" attitude will be part of that.
On the other hand, it doesn't hurt that some Chassidic clans have turned quite cultish in the last several decades.

  2. Orthodoxy is a cult. So what?

    From dictionary.com:

    cult
       [kuhlt] Show IPA
    noun
    1. a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
    2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
    3. the object of such devotion.
    4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
    5. Sociology . a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.

Looks like Orthodoxy fits 1, 2, 4 and 5. Chassidus, doubly so.

Men need to know how to make a woman happy and a woman needs to know how to make her man happy. In these kind of situations, ALL talk of religion must be thrown out the window because it's almost NEVER the real underlying issue in marital and relationship disputes.

Pearl and Shauly are naive. Secular society is WORSE than religious society because it allows and encourages kids from the age of puberty the freedom to indulge in sexual behaviors including intercourse. By the time most kids graduate public school they have lost their virginity. If not, then by the time they complete a four year college program usually living in mixed gender dorms they will have tasted a very long sexual history. So secular society has nothing to be proud of, and Yiddishkeit has nothing to apologize for by encouraging people to marry when they are still young. Otherwise, it's just going to be a singles society as there is right now. Marriage takes lots of energy, and a young parents are better suited to take care of young kids. The older one gets the harder it is to have and take of children.

Pearl and Shauly are two very genuine people, it is heratbreaking to see the pain they are in, and they deserve to be heard out, but their problems need to be solved on the personal level and not by attacking religion on Dr. Phil's TV talk-show program, that will not bring a solution to their own personal anguish.
