Is it prohibited to leave Yeshiva to study Medicine?

Igros Moshe (YD IV #36.13) Question: Is it prohibited to leave Yeshiva to study Medicine? Answer There is no actual prohibition even for someone who has learned for many years in yeshiva and is capable of growing in Torah. He is leaving his primary study to go to medical or engineering school since he wants a lot of money. According to the natural course of things he sees only these professions as appropriate.or he thinks he can get a better shidduch . Even though it is not relevant if he does this to grow in Torah and in fact the opposite is true.If he can find a place which is not co-ed. Going to a co-ed school is prohibited even if they don’t teach heresy. The bottom line he will not be fulfilling the mitzva of Torah study and understanding. While it is true that the Torah permits this for someone who wishes to make money or even to become wealthy. He still needs to fix time in the day and night to the degree possible fot Torah study as well as to delve into the depths .He needs to acknowledge that greatness in Torah does not result from this unless in a miraculous fashion. It is unlikely that one who is neglectful of Torah study for wealth will have miracles done.

  1. A rabbi was recently jailed for 10 years for sexually abusing his 3 daughters.since he didn't go to co ed university, what is the halacha doing to prevent this severe sin from taking place?

    1. If co ed education is prohibited, there are not many professionals who have observed halacha.
      A) is it therefore prohibited to receive medical treatment from anyone who learned in a regular university?
(Doctor, nurse, physio, pharmacist, radiologist etc)
      B) do agudas yisroel guarantee to compensate my son for the salary he could have earned had he studied medicine or law in a regular university?
      C) first thing that shadchanim ask for are your bank statements.
I'm assuming that the hareidi would provide funding for those who follow his prohibition to learn a realistic trade?

That was always the difference between the Mishnah Berurah and the Shulchan Aruch.
The MB lived in an ideal world and paskened for an ideal world. Piety was an achievable goal. The ArSh lived in the real world and paskened for reality.
However, even for the ideal, the concept of a men's only medical school nowadays is not a serious one. Seriously, imagine learning all the gynecology from a textbook that had the privat parts photoshopped out.

    3. You mean the Aruch hashulchan?
Yeah, MB is an ivory Tower type book, obviously a tzaddik of the CC's calibre could live to such ideals, given the support system of the community around him.
On the other hand, there's a story that the CC once a wrote a declaration that Rabbanim should not speak any Loshon hara, and when Rav Chaim Ozer read it, he tore it up. A Dayan has to see the reality, and facts around him in order to make a ruling.

I think it was this blog many, many years ago that published a list of the CC's strictures and how they were being used to cover up the rampant abuse in the Orthodox community.

    5. disagree with both of you The Chofetz Chaim was well aware of the world but as Dr Brown descubes him he focused on aspiration rather than simply accept what was typical behavior. Alot of Rav Moshe's statements are also aspirational . In general the chareidi poskim try to raise the standards not justify failure. The Aruch HaShulchan tries to live with what people do rather than what they should do.

    6. It's not hareidi poskim per se _ the Or sameyach was at the time hareidi (maybe now he's seen as mizrachi).
Rav Chaim ozer was chareidi. The Aruch hashulhan was by all intents hareidi, but is viewed as more modern. And it has been said that Rav Moshe generally paskens like the Aruch rather than the CC.
This is from accounts I've read - it could be biased view.

    7. The problem with being aspirational is that zealots come along and say "See? It says in the MB that..." and present it as the minumum standard, not the ideal maximum.

    8. And that's what, according to the Netziv, led to the destruction of the Beit hamikdash!

    9. That is not what the Netziv said! He said the problem was they killed those who disagreed

    10. Interesting. A few weeks ago you pointed out that the Chazon ish was a lone voice in saying that tinok shemishba applies today, so we don't lower into the pit.
I suppose you will argue that's regarding secular. But the zealots would argue that it's only because we don't have the authority to kill, otherwise it's deserved..

  2. The first step was as Garnel described, they called anyone slightly more lenient than themselves "heretics".
The consequence was that they killed them.
The consequence was that Hashem destroyed them and the temple
And the shame that a real heretic like Herzl was given the kavod of bringing back the Jews. Ie Hashem is still warning us not to be like the generation of the churban.

    1. It's always struck me as interesting how the Chareidim seem to have a line they will not cross. Mass riots, sure. Vandalism, sure. Low level violence like beatings, sure. But no mass murder. No guns. They stop at that line.

    5. Try reading the article
Then try reading some Psychology textbooks before throwing around concepts like projection, when you don't know what it means. (Denial is also something you ought to learn about).
