Freewill vs Determinism

 https://www.simplypsychology.org/freewill-determinism.html

Hard determinism sees free will as an illusion and believes that every event and action has a cause.

Behaviorists are strong believers in hard determinism. Their most forthright and articulate spokesman has been B. F. Skinner. Concepts like “free will” and “motivation” are dismissed as illusions that disguise the real causes of human behavior.

In Skinner’s scheme of things the person who commits a crime has no real choice. (S)he is propelled in this direction by environmental circumstances and a personal history, which makes breaking the law natural and inevitable.

  1. Rav Milevsky ztl would say that a thief cannot steal, and then say "it was not me, it was my hand"

Hard behaviorism might claim there is no free will, but mainstream, behavioural therapy says we have choice - to do the therapy, to learn new patterns and extinguish old ones.

  2. the original issue is why religious people should avoid Psychology and your answer is if you cherry pick you can avoid the conflicts
But Freud and behaviourism are inherently at odds with religious values - despite your ability to find quotes of certain ignorant authority figures who share your mistaken views

  4. Ignorant is a word you throw around lightly.

The article in this post mentions several psychologsts. Seems the author is not using determinism the way it's used in Judaism. He cites Albert bandura , who said children learn from what they see in their parents behaviour. Hence they pick up learned behaviours and responses.
What do chareidim say about chinuch? They say the family, midos
School, environment are so important because they determine outcomes, like heresy, arayos etc. Why do they oppose army, TV. Cinema, university culture? Because they have their own social learning Theory, which is near identical to bandura and mischel.
Because hareidim are strong behaviourists, and don't hold free will. Go to the army, surrounded by chilonim - you become chiloni. Sit inyeshiva , kollel, you stay frum.
Live in bnei brak, good. In Tel Aviv, bad.
So please think through before calling everyone ignorant
