But there is no agreed-upon definition of “woke” or a formal political organization or movement associated with it. Nor is there an exact definition of what constitutes being “canceled” or a victim of “cancel culture.” However, despite their vagueness, you now see conservative activists and Republican politicians constantly using these terms. That’s because that vagueness is a feature, not a bug. Casting a really wide range of ideas and policies as too woke and anyone who is critical of them as being canceled by out-of-control liberals is becoming an important strategy and tool on the right — in fact, this cancel culture/woke discourse could become the organizing idea of the post-Trump-presidency Republican Party.

ReplyDeleteIt's like the old definition of pornography - I know it when I see it.
The Woke might not have an official definition but there is a definite process. First, someone says something that transgresses Woke ideology. Something like "Men can't menstruate" or "Saying you're a woman doesn't make you one when you have male genitals". Or perhaps you refer to Bruce Jenner, not Kaitlyn.
Then the attacks begin. If the person works in a public organization like a university or publication, other staffers start to protest to the management that they feel unsafe because you have an opinion they don't like. Don't you know speech is violence? How can I feel safe knowing you disagree with me?
Then comes the public humiliation. Twitter attacks, posts on FB and Linked In. Coordinated with e-mails and phone calls to the person's employer - if you don't fire him, we'll attack and publicly humiliate you too!
Finally the employer caves and fires the individual. The individual apologizes but it's too late. He said the wrong thing! For the rest of his life he must be shunned and forced away from anything public. Anyone who defies that order will also be cancelled!
Some people don't care. JK Rowling is too rich and powerful to be cancelled. Jordan Peterson thrives on it! But too many folks see their lives destroyed by the mob.
Like Cheney?Anyone who testified about Trump?
ReplyDeleteYes throw out the concept of laws courts and judges. I Know it when I see it Problem is you see something that I don't
ReplyDeleteWell yes, that's a good point. Cancel culture does throw out the concept of laws and judges. #Metoo was all about that. When a woman accuses a man of something, he is automatically guilty. Skip the trial and go straight to the punishment.
ReplyDeleteAnd how can laws and judges even get involves when so many of the crimes cancel culture pounces on are actually perfectly legal?
And child abuse and domestic violence never happen and those who report it are antisemites or self hating Jews. Blacks are not killed by the police and only ANTIFA could have stormed the Capitol
