Can Pfizer (or any) vaccine really end the pandemic?

Following close on the heels of Pfizer’s announcement came warnings from public health officials in several countries that a “campaign of misinformation” would likely follow, promoted by anti-vaxxers eager to dampen the public’s enthusiasm in the vaccine. Nonetheless, many of the reservations put forward by experts in the last few days are well-founded and scientifically based, and cannot be easily dismissed.

Speaking at a webinar to the Board of Trustees of the University of Haifa this week, Professor Richard Horton, editor of the prestigious medical journal the Lancet, admitted that “there are question marks surrounding the vaccine.”

  1. It's a Trump vaccine.
    Can't be healthy.

  2. Of course there are question marks. We haven't even seen the data yet!
    Completely useless commentary from Horton.
It's ok to be optimistic. It's quite possible the vaccines will work well. So far so good. We will have to see the data, including the safety profile.

  3. Early results show 90% efficacy. This will not hold up and Pfizer has already said so. However, here's how the vaccine will end this:
Most vaccines aren't anywhere near 90% efficacy. However, even in those who "fail" the intensity of the illness is significantly reduced. Kids vaccinated against chicken pox can still get chicken pox, but they get 10 lesions instead of 1000 and they don't get the complications like hepatitis and pneumonia. Same thing with flu, measles and the rest. So a widespread vaccination campaign will either protect you or assure you that your worst result is a mild experience, not a potential ICU one.
This is also not the only vaccine. Other trials might show comparable, better or worse results.
The pandemic ends when, like flu, this virus just happens to be part of our environment but doesn't kill anyone anymore.

  4. Even assuming vaccine is relatively effective , distribution will be a gigantic problem given the temperature it must be stored at
